Chapter 19 - Missing In Action

Taylor's PoV

"Why won't you look at me?" Ranger called to me. A shimmering brightness, like a spotlight, came down over both of us. I held my head down, looking at the black void below me. Ranger was smiling at me, I know, but I didn't look at her.

"Are you afraid? Why are you so afraid?"

I refused to say anything.
"You don't want to try this power. Or else you'll be stuck here..."

I loomed up, and the lights flashed. "LiKE MeeEEEee!!"

Her voice echoed as she flashes quickly between herself, and a much more murderous, bloody form of herself. A psychotic form, that loomed as if she enjoyed killing.

Then... I felt a smile come on as something came into my hand. The grip of small knife stained in blood, and I was smiling. But... why? Why was I smiling? Why was I smiling holding a bloody knife? In front of me appeared a body with the word "TRAITOR" carved into their stomach.
Who did I kill? And who was the traitor? And yet what was this power I craved... and wanted more then anything, to be willing to kill, torture, and sell my soul for?

What is this place I'm in? Who is doing this?

"Taylor hey! Get up!!" A voice echoed and I felt a shake on my left arm. I jolted awake at the sound and was gasping. Right, we had camped out on the side of the road because it we all got so tired.

"Good, you were crying in your sleep." Nate glanced to me.

"I-It was a nightmare..." I shuddered. I didn't want to talk about it, what I saw... It does nothing but creep me out and make me question everything. I hissed in pain thinking of it; I wanted this memory to go away.

"Well whatever it was about, can you shut up so I can sleep?" Nate remarked.

"Were almost there you guys. Let's just ride to the town, it's close enough." Jason gave a yawn. "So what's the first thing we need to do? Find Ranger's Body?"

"Yeah. Any ideas as to where it would be?"

"My guess is set to be incinerated." Jake replied. "Best bet is that it's already been taken by police."

"It may be the police station in VeilShire. We'll have to find it and quickly get it back to take it to the people who gave me this book."

"Wait, Who DID give you that book?" Nate asked.

"It... was actually on the ground. I was from two guys who were walking away from me dropped it, said I could keep it, but when I asked about it, they were gone. Well I ended up flipping though the book and there were some words written in a weird language. But I could make out from the pictures there was some ritual that we could do to unbind the souls. Of course Ranger died and... well, you know the rest."

~later~

We ride slowly though what looked like a ghost town, the streets of Veilshire empty. We tried to keep out head low and be extra careful. We pulled to next street over from the police station, where the mortuary was. I was concerned as to how we would get inside the building, and if there were any cameras to record us. The building was made of bricks, had glass doors and had some windows.

"Whelp, any ideas?" Nate asked.

"The roof may have a vent we can go though. If not, we're gonna have to shatter a window." My brother explained. "But my guess is that vent I see is the crematory furnace vent. In other words, hot death."

"I'll take my chances with the window."

I hopped off my horse, and started to walk to the building. I glanced around, and saw some cameras. "We got security."

"Shit. That isn't good." Jake said. "How we gonna get past it?"

"I would take my chances. For all we know, they could be just for looks, in hopes of scaring people like us off." Nate said, hoping off his horse. "Besides, we're already wanted to the highest point to be put on death row, what's a little more crime gonna do?"

"Alright Nathan, we'll take our chances. Who's going in?"

"Jason, go with Nate, Taylor and Jake. I'll watch the horses." Monica said.

"Whoa whoa, I didn't agree to go inside." Jake protested

"Well you do now. C'mon." Nate pulled Jakes shirt and nearly yanked him out from behind the horses. Getting close to the building, I saw a window we could pass though.

"Got a rock? Or something else?"

"Check dis." My brother said. He looked around and picked up relatively small rock, about the size of the palm of his hand.
Preparing, he took the rock, and did an overhead throw at bursting speed, shattering the glass in the window and creating a horrifying and loud noise.

"We get in, we get out. People probably herd that."

I scrapped away bits of glass shards and hopped on though, with Nathan, Jake, and my brother fallowing. The building wasn't a lot, but I saw a metal door with a large handle a sign that read "KEEP CLOSED WHEN NOT IN USE. FREEZER ROOM."
There was also a meter next to the door which looked like a temperature meter, currently it was °36 F (°4 C) inside.

"This has to be where the bodies are kept. C'mon!"

I pried open that steel door and went inside. A rush of cold chilling air got to me. Even though I was wearing a jacket, this jacket was more like a second layer of skin to me considering how much I wear it. The cold still chilled me.
To the left were large drawer like coolers, some having yellow tags that read various names.

"She's gotta be in one of these!" I started to look among the sets to find her name. This was a pretty small place, so no more then 20 drawers were here. I was glancing around a lot to try and find the one with Rangers name.

*crash*

A small sound of glass breaking was hard and nearly gave me a heart attack. I looked over and saw my brother with Nate looking at each other, then to me.

"It was him." They both said at the same time, pointing.

"Will you two idiots stop and help me look? We're not here to play with... whatever the Nether is in these bottles."

"Here!" Jake called at the other end of the freezer. We all scrambled to it and saw the little tag. "Ranger De'Fillio, 16"
We went to open the freezer drawer, my heart pounding.
But there was no body...

"U-um... isn't she supposed t-to be here?!"

"Wait there's a note." Jason picked up a small index card.

-Meet us at Killroy Tavern. Tell the bartender on job that you'll be having the 'Unknown Lands' drink, and they'll know what it means.
We want to help you
-K

"Where's Killroy Tavern? And what kind of name is that for a tavern?" Nate asked.

"It's on Crossroads Street, near the town center. And we have more important issues then figuring out what kind of a name Killroy is. But who's 'K'?" Asked my brother.

"I don't know and I don't care. They have Rangers body and we need to get it back. I don't know why someone would want a body other then us right now. Alright, back to the horses."

"What about the broken glass?" Jake said looking to it.

I turned around with a sigh and gave a glare. "Do you really think I care about a broken glass right now, Jake?"
