-*-*-*-*- Will -*-*-*-*-
"Will!" Tessa shouted, rapping her knuckles against his door. "Will, come out now!" Will groaned and rolled off his bed. He was resting after running about Whitechapel most of the day.
"By the Angel, woman," he said. "Can you not spend one minute without yearning for the pleasure of my company?" He opened the door and Tessa grabbed his arm, yanking him down the hall.
"What are you doing?" He asked, amused but completely bewildered. "If you wanted a late night rendezvous, all you had to do was ask."
"Be quiet, William," Tessa said. "This is serious."
"Is it now?" Will grinned.
"Will, I swear if you don't be quiet right now, in the morning I will Change into you and everybody will see what you look like in a dress at breakfast," Tessa threatened.
"I think I'd look rather angelic," Will mused. "But, as I recall, you made that same threat to Jem. Or is my memory a little muddled up?"
Tessa didn't reply but opened the door to Jessamine's room. Will didn't know what to expect in there, but he certainly didn't think he'd see Jessamine tied to a bed with Sophie clutching a heavy mirror in her hand.
"What on Earth-" he started.
"Sophie found Jessamine with this," Tessa said, handing Will the invitation to Benedict Lightwood's ball with Nathaniel Gray's note. "She had no choice but to stop her. Jessamine could be a spy, Will. And more importantly, my brother could be using her to get to Charlotte." But Will wasn't listening to the last bit.
"Sophie did this?" He asked, incredulous.
"Yes, yes, yes," Tessa said. "But can we please stay focussed."
"Sophie, I think I may marry you," Will said. Sophie made a small, whimpering sound.
"Oh stop it," Tessa snapped. "Don't frighten her more than she already is. The question is, what are we going to do, Will?"
"It's obvious, isn't it?" Will said. "You Change into Jessamine and we'll go to that party. If your brother is there, then we may be able to glean some information on the Magister's whereabouts."
"But what if the Magister is there?"
"You will go no where near him," Will said very coldly.
"Shall we wake Jem?" Tessa asked. "We may need some back up." Will pressed his lips together.
"No," he said. "After last night, I owe it to him not to get him involved. And anyway, Jem is too easily recognisable. It's best we go alone."
"But Charlotte-"
"We will tell her, Tessa," Will reassured her. "But after we find out if this is what it looks like."
"Sophie," Tessa said. "Can you fetch the dress Nate was talking about?" Sophie nodded. "Good. You'll have to do my hair as well." Will grinned.
"Shall we go to a ball, Miss Gray?"
-*-*-*-*- Jem -*-*-*-*-
Jem whispered the name of a seraph blade and slowly pushed open the door to the offices at the docks. They were empty at this present time, but the hairs on the back of his neck were standing on end, telling his something was wrong.
Stepping lightly, he glided across the floor towards the bookshelf at the back, drawing off a record book. It wasn't exactly what he'd call organised so it would take him a while to find what he needed. As he flicked through each book, movement caught his eye. Jem's sword-cane hissed as he drew it.
But he was too slow. A metal claw grabbed the back of his gear, yanking him off his feet. Jem kicked out but only connected with air as the automaton lifted him.
"Get your hands off me!" Jem yelled. The automaton creaked and groaned.
"You were warned with William Herondale," it screeched. "You have ignored the Magister's warning and continued with your search. Now, you shall pay." Jem tried to struggle free but the automaton was too powerful. It thumped him on the side of the head then threw him at a wall.
What have I done? Jem thought as the automaton's hand reached for him again and he blacked out.
-*-*-*-*- Will -*-*-*-*-
"Don't worry," Will whispered to Tessa as the carriage drew up to the Lightwood's manor house in Chiswick. "I'll be there the entire time so if anything does go wrong, I'll get us out. Just remember, even if you can't see me, I'll be there."
"That's not entirely comforting," Tessa muttered.
"Would you rather I declare myself upon entering?" Tessa ignored him. She stepped delicately down the carriage steps and met the demonic looking servant at the gates. Will melted into the shadows, following Tessa and the servant all the way to the doors. He slipped in after her, watching as she made her way down the corridor and into the ball room. Will felt oddly proud of her as she spoke to her brother with ease, tricking him into telling her everything.
Tessa suddenly turned to Nate, breaking them from their dance. He guided her to a chair then left. Will made his way towards her, watching as she talked to a faerie woman. He waited in the shadows for her to leave then hurried up to Tessa.
"What did the faerie woman want?" he asked quietly.
"To tell me I'm not a changeling, apparently," she replied.
"Well, process of elimination," Will said. "Look, your brother's coming back." Will stepped away again and towards an automaton, handing a little note to it. It didn't have any brains to determine who he was. Will only had to say the Magister's name and it was off.
He returned to Tessa's side as soon as Nate was gone.
"I see your brother got my little message," Will said to her under his breath.
"So that was you," she mumbled. "Will, I- I don't think-"
"You did fine, Tessa," Will reassured her. "You did very well indeed."
"They are married," she whispered. "It's what Jessie always wanted. Jessamine's a spy, Will. She's been slipping information to Nate and the Magister behind our backs. She's trying to frame me by hiding the Book of White in my room."
"So it is true then," Will murmured. "We must go, Tess. Before your brother figures out what's going on and comes back." He turned but Tessa gripped his arm.
"Will," she said. "Nate also said something about Grace." Will froze where he stood.
"Grace?" he said, his voice barely audible.
"The Magister is going to kill her, Will," Tessa said. "Jessamine told him where they took her. He's going to kidnap her and kill her to get Yanluo."
"When?"
"Tomorrow night," she whispered. Then Tessa stumbled into Will's arms. He caught her and half carried her out of some French doors. All the time, her disguise was slipping away.
"Tessa? Tess, are you all right?" he asked, panic rising in his voice.
"I'm fine," she said, leaning on the balcony. "I think it's just the shock of it all." Will took her hands in his, all his thoughts murky and unclear. She looked so brave and fearless right now, but beautiful at the same time, even with her hair falling out and her dress not fitting properly. God, how many times had he held himself back from this?
"Will?" she said.
"Tess," he whispered. "My Tess..."
"Shouldn't we go? We have to warn the Institute," she said but her voice wavering.
"We will," he replied. "There's still time." Will didn't know what he was doing. Grace was in danger and the rest of the Institute didn't know Jessamine was a spy yet. It was cause for him to run there like a maniac now. But he didn't want to leave.
He couldn't bring himself to leave.
Will bent down and kissed her, feeling her soft lips against his. He pulled her closer to him, forgetting to be gentle. Her hands linked behind his neck and she took a sharp intake of breath. At some point, a couple opened the doors behind them and tutted in disapproval. But they didn't stop. It was only when Magnus Bane interrupted that they broke apart.
"What are you doing here?" Tessa snapped at him.
"One of Camille's subjugates recognised Will," Magnus replied, a little cheerfully which was odd. "He got a message to me. I thought you too might be up against it but...well, it seems you're handling things just fine. Drank the lemonade, did you?"
"Leave her alone, Magnus," Will said, turning and leaning on the balcony. He felt agonizingly sick. What did he just do? He put Tessa's life in danger yet again, and this time, he didn't think he had the courage to say something horrible to her like he had last time. "She didn't know what she was drinking."
"I suggest you leave with me now," Magnus said. "Remember William, you owe me. And if you are going to stand a chance at saving young Grace, then you better go now."
"How...? Tessa trailed off.
"I have sources," Magnus said. "And I've been looking into it for a while. Will, you better see Philip Blackthorn the moment you return." Will didn't even ask how Magnus knew that Philip was in the Institute.
"Come along then," Magnus said, snapping his fingers. In a shower of blue sparks, they were suddenly in the gardens. Suddenly, a rabble of demons came around the corner, snarling and snapping their teeth. Instantly, Will knew the one in the front.
"You!" he shouted and he launched himself at the blue skinned one. They tumbled down the hill and raced off into the darkness, leaving Tessa and Magnus behind.
***
By the time Will made it back to the Institute after catching the demon, it biting him, running to Magnus' house, fainting onto his sofa and then finally having an unfortunate run-in with Camille herself, it was extremely late. He had collapsed onto his bed the moment he saw it and woke about ten o'clock the next day.
He groaned and stumbled to the dining room where the rest of the Institute were assembled. Oddly enough though, there was no Jem.
"Has anyone seen Jem this morning?" Will asked upon entering. The meeting about Jessamine stopped instantly.
"No," Charlotte said. "He wasn't well last night. I thought he was spending the day resting. Haven't you seen him?"
"No, I haven't," Will said, puzzled. "It's unlike him to miss something this important."
"Perhaps someone should go and check on him," Tessa said, biting her lip. She had a very worried look on her face.
"I'll be right back," Will said. "Don't do anything without me." He bounded down the corridor and skidded to a halt by Jem's door.
"James?" He called, knocking loudly. "James, are you all right?" There was no answer. Will opened the door and stuck his head round it. "Jem?" To his surprise, the room was empty. Will swiftly stepped inside. Something wasn't right. There was a sick feeling in his stomach. Was it his imagination, or was his parabatai rune burning slightly?
Will approached the bed, finding a small note resting upon the pillow. Carefully, he unfolded it.
Will,
Sorry for disappearing so suddenly but I felt as though I had no choice.
I have to find Mortmain. He has to be brought to justice for what he did to Grace. I think I may have a way to find him and leave him vulnerable. There's one thing that connects Mortmain to everyone and everything, one thing that he needs to complete his plan. And I know I should have probably told you and Charlotte, but I have to do this on my own.
If I'm not back by morning, then I've either found something or something has happened. If it is the former, I will send you a message to let you know I'm all right. If it is the latter, then find Mortmain. Find a way to wake my sister. Don't stop till you do. I trust no one else with this.
Your parabatai,
Jem.
Will felt his heart lurch. He should have known this was going to happen. He should have seen the signs. Jem hadn't been anywhere near himself recently. He was so angry, so caught up on revenge. God, the guilt was eating him up form the inside out. He had just snapped and Will wasn't there for him.
"Charlotte!" Will shouted, running down the corridors and bursting into the dining room. "Charlotte!" he yelled again. "Jem's gone. He's left to hunt down Mortmain. And I think something terrible has happened."
Charlotte took the note from him, turning more pale as she read it. "What was he thinking?" she whispered. "The Jem we know wouldn't do this. Will? What's happening?"
"I should have seen this coming," Will said angrily, kicking a near by chair. Tessa squeaked a little but then fell quiet, taking in the shock. "He's been acting so differently. I thought it was just grief. I didn't realise how serious it was."
"Does anyone have any idea what he means when he says that Mortmain needs one thing to complete his plan?" Charlotte asked. "Henry? Tessa? Sophie?" She seemed so desperate but holding together.
"None," Henry said gravely, shaking his head.
"We have to alert the Enclave," Charlotte said, rising to her feet. "We will probably lose the Institute for this but I'd rather that then lose Jem." Will turned to pick up his weapons.
"There's only one person who understands Master Jem better than Master Will does," Sophie suddenly said quietly. Everybody looked to her. "Miss Grace."
"But we have no idea how to cure Grace," Charlotte said but the cogs were already turning in Will's head. He knew what he had to do. Things had become desperate enough for him to do it.
"Charlotte," Will said, his voice cracked and raw. "Summon Philip. It's time we listen to him. We have to listen to him."
