'Why do we fall into love
When all we do is run into trouble
I don't know why I gambled on your heart
Cause it got lost in the struggle, yeah
Just give me one night
I'd risk everything
One night
I'd risk everything
One night
To win you back again.'

-*-*-*-*- Will -*-*-*-*-
"Look, he's waking up," Jem said. Will stood from the dusty bed, feeling a little anxious.
"Are you sure you want to do this, Jem?" he said. "I'll help you whatever you choose I...I just want you make sure you're making the right decision."
"I'm sure, Will," Jem said, not looking at him. His gaze was cold and fixed on Philip.
"All I ask is that-" Will was interrupted by a groan from Philip.
"Urgh...where am I?" he moaned.
"In the Institute," Jem said coldly. Philip laughed softly.
"So you didn't turn me in to the Clave," he chuckled. "You are in some trouble, aren't you?"
"Yes, yes, yes," Will sighed dramatically. "We're all going to suffer the wrath of the Consul. I fear the wrath of Charlotte more than Consul Wayland, Philip, and so should you."
"You haven't even told her?" Philip asked, not faking the shock this time.
"We will," Jem said. "But I have some questions for you first."
"You want to know how to wake your sister up," he said.
"No," Jem said. "You were the one who got her in this position in the first place. I am not letting you anywhere near her."
"I wouldn't lie to you," Philip said. "Not about this. I love her, James and the Magister used that against me. He told me he had a way to spare her, to make sure Yanluo didn't kill her but still use the demon to stop the Clave."
"Oh really?" Jem said angrily, his voice rising to a shout. "You know there's no way to free Yanluo without killing Grace. You've been her doctor for years, Philip. How could you have been tricked by that? No, you're just saying that to cover your back so we wouldn't blame you. You don't love her. You don't deserve to love her! Someone like you doesn't know how to love."
"I'm not trying to save myself," Philip pleaded. "I know I've sealed my fate. What the Magister told me was what I wanted to hear. He used me because I was already so lost. You wouldn't understand but the Clave stole my childhood from me. All I did was stop a demon from possessing my brother. That was it. But they forced me to work for them in something I never understood. I made up what I was saying to Grace most of the time! I just want the Clave to understand that they can't be a dictatorship. We need a new leader, someone who won't force kids to do jobs they don't understand. For all I know, I could have killed your sister for suggesting something to her that wouldn't work."
Will turned to Jem who looked very conflicted. "He has a point, Jem," he said. "We both know what the Clave can be like. I mean, look what they did to Grace."
"It still doesn't change what you've done," Jem said. "I sorry that you feel this way but the Clave are here for a reason. If they weren't here, the world would be even worse than it is now, despite some idiotic decisions by them."
Philip looked down. "I know this now," he said. "And you don't know how sorry I am for putting the world in danger...for putting the one person who gave me strength in danger. But please, if there is any part of you that is willing to listen, I beg of you to listen now."
Will grabbed Jem's arm. "We'll be back in a minute," he said to Philip and proceeded to yank Jem out of the door into the corridor.
"Will-" Jem started.
"We need to be careful here, Jem," Will said quietly. "I think we should listen to him. Then we can make a decision."
"But he's going to lie to us!" Jem whispered furiously. "He works for Mortmain!"
"Just listen to him," Will said. "We can't let our hatred for him blind us." Jem smiled a little, making Will breath a sigh for relief. There was still some Jem in there.
"You're starting to sound like me," Jem said.
"Lord help me," Will chuckled. They went back into the room.
"We'll listen to you," Jem said. "But if you're lying-"
"I won't lie to you," Philip said. "For the sake of Grace, I won't lie to you."
"Go on then," Will said, kicking back on the bed. "I haven't got all day."
"Miss Gray is the key to waking up Grace," Philip said. "It might have been another reason why the Magister wants her."
"Might have been?" Will asked, raising his eyebrows.
"If the Magister wanted Grace but the precise moment he captured her wasn't ideal to free Yanluo, he may have purposely put her to sleep by using the medallion. What happened in the Sanctuary was an accident. Grace managed to fight back when Miss Gray tricked us. But Yanluo had too much strength for Grace to push down, so she slipped into unconsciousness, completely unintentional by the Magister," Philip said. "If he intended to do it and take her, then he had to have a way to wake her up. I think Miss Gray must be the answer but I don't know because I'm not exactly the Magister's right hand man anymore."
"Tessa?" Jem said. "No. That's not her power. And even if she could wake Grace up, it's too dangerous."
"Look, I don't know. That's all I found out before I left," Philip sighed.
"You didn't believe it either at first, did you?" Will said, remembering his conversation with Old Molly. "You've been searching for another cure for her but you can't find one." Philip pursed his lips together and nodded.
"Anything else you know?" Jem asked, grinding his teeth together.
"Well, I don't know where he is, if that's what you mean," Philip said. "I've been on my own for a few weeks now but I know why Mortmain hates Shadowhunters so much. It's not much but it's a start. You'll need some proof though."
"We better get Charlotte," Will said to Jem. "She'll need to hear this." They called for Charlotte who came wearily.
"Honestly, you two," she sighed. "If this turns out to be- oh my goodness!"
"Good morning, Mrs Branwell," Philip said sheepishly.
"Will, Jem!? What is he doing here?" Charlotte squeaked.
"He came to the Institute of his own accord," Jem muttered. "We're not sure whether or not we should believe him." Charlotte listened in silence as Philip told her everything he had just told Will and Jem. Will couldn't tell what she was feeling at that moment but her face was steely and, quite frankly, terrifying.
"Jem, can you go to the Silent City and ask the Brothers to look into the Reparations?" Charlotte said after Philip had finished. Jem nodded. Will could tell he was thinking about Grace. "Philip, we won't turn you into the Clave just yet. It seems you must earn your forgiveness first. But I will add, if you turn on us again, I will not hesitate to hand you over to the Silent Brothers for questioning with the Mortal Sword. Is that clear?"
Philip nodded and gulped. "Yes, ma'am."
"Good," she said, untying him. "You are free to roam the Institute but you cannot leave without my permission."
"Can I see Grace?" Philip asked. Before either Jem or Will could say anything Charlotte took control.
"She is no longer in our care," Charlotte said coldly. "She's been sent to the Silent City as a precaution. You shall not be able to go. No one is to know that you are here." Philip's expression looked shattered and guilt filled. Charlotte noticed this. "You should have thought about the consequences of you actions before you committed them, Mr Blackthorn."
-*-*-*-*- Grace -*-*-*-*-
"Look, there's her boat!" Jian shouted to Grace over the noise of Shanghai's port. Grace was being pulled along by Jian after their father. It was the first time Grace had seen her father since entering this nightmare and she almost fainted at the sight of him.
Grace stood on the docks and watched as the boat unloaded it's crew, luggage and passengers. "There she is," Jian said, pointing to the gang plank. Jessamine was wearing a long red dress, her glistening golden hair tied up in a tight chignon. She gracefully made her way down to the docks, ignoring all the sailors who were staring at her and tripping over themselves to help her down onto the docks.
"Grace, darling!" she cried with happiness, throwing her arms around a bewildered Grace and kissing her cheeks. "Oh it has been such a long time!"
"Welcome again to Shanghai, Miss Lovelace," Grace's father said, tipping his hat.
"Thank you very much, Mr Carstairs," Jessamine said, bobbing her head. "Jian, how very nice to see you again too." Jian went bright pink when she said his name.
"It's- err, I mean to say, it's good to see you too, Miss Lovelace," he stammered.
"Now, Grace dear," Jessamine said. "Where is this beautiful maid of honour's dress you've been telling me about in your letters?"
"Erm...er, I- I don't-" Grace stuttered but her father interrupted.
"Grace's mother is just putting the finishing touches on it as we speak, Miss Lovelace," he said, smiling to himself. "It shall be ready by tomorrow."
"Oh that is wonderful to hear," Jessamine said. "And can I express my sincere apologies for being late and delaying the wedding."
"With all due respect, Miss Lovelace," Jian said. "But the wedding wasn't delayed because of you."
"Oh," she said. "Oh dear. I suppose Philip..."
"Yes," Jian said, looking down. Jessamine hooked her arm through Grace's.
"Well, I believe we should get going," she said, dragging a very dazzled Grace with her. "I have a lovely wedding gift for you, Grace dear...."
-*-*-*-*- Jem -*-*-*-*-
He stood alone by the stone pedestal on which Grace lay. Jem remembered the last time he was here, almost six years ago now. He was barely alive at the time but he still made the effort to come and see her...
-*-*-*-*- Silent City 1872 -*-*-*-*-
Jem leaned heavily on the wall outside his...well, the Silent Brothers called it his room but there were no rooms for visitors in the Silent City. It was more like a cell but they left the door open at least. Grace wasn't with him though. They kept her separate from everything.
He struggled to push himself off the wall but managed to walk a few steps down the corridor before he had to stop again, breathing deeply. They were trying to wean him off the drug at the moment but the lack of it made him weak. Jem didn't think it was going to work. Yanluo didn't give you a way out that easily.
Eventually, Jem made it to the chamber where they kept Grace. She was lying on the stone slab, completely motionless. It was only because of the Silent Brothers that she wasn't screaming and raving. It had been five weeks and she still hadn't woken up. Jem didn't know what she was facing inside her head, but he missed her. He missed her a lot. Things hadn't been easy without her. He needed her. And she needed him. Their parents had always said they should always stick together. No matter what. There had never been a day that Jem and Grace hadn't been together.
But right now, even though they were in the same room, they had never been more far apart. He desperately wanted to help her, but he was completely powerless. They had just lost their parents and were facing death herself. This was the time they needed each other the most but they were cruelly being kept seperate. Jem wasn't sure if he could do this without her.
He reached out and stoked Grace's cheek. She stirred a little, mumbling something in Chinese.
"Yào jiānqiáng," he whispered.
Stay strong.
" James," Brother Enoch said from behind him. " You shouldn't be in here. We told you to rest." Jem whipped around, standing protectively in front of Grace. Even now, when he had been in the Silent Brother's presence for weeks, they still scared him. To him, they always meant a new, painful way of healing him. And almost always, the pain was for nothing.
"I had to see her," Jem said. "She needs to know that I'm all right. Please let her stay with me."
" We are taking the best care of her," Brother Enoch said gently, taking Jem's arm and allowing Jem to lean on him. Jem didn't realise how tired he had got." But you have to take care of yourself too. Come with me back to your room." Jem took one last look at Grace then allowed Brother Enoch to support him out of the chamber...
-*-*-*-*- Jem -*-*-*-*-
"James," Brother Enoch said, breaking Jem out of his thoughts. "I asked you to wait at the entrance."
"I apologize, Brother Enoch," Jem said. "I just...I wanted to..."
"You need not explain," he said. "You are still the same caring brother as you were six years ago. And still stubborn, may I add, risking your own health for the chance to see your sister even just for a minute."
"Did you find anything in the Reparations?" Jem asked, changing the subject.
"Mortmain did indeed file a Reparation asking for the Shadowhunters who killed his adoptive parents to be punished," Brother Enoch said, his voice emotionless. "However, it was only asking for compensation for his mother's death. But for more information, you need to contact the York Institute."
"Thank you, Brother Enoch," Jem said. He kissed Grace on the forehead and turned to leave.
"I shall return your sister to you, James," Brother Enoch said. "I swore to you six years ago that I would not give up. I swear I have no intention of giving up now." Jem didn't say anything. He walked out quickly, not looking back.
