Chapter 22- Angels

Disclaimer: SOME of the dialogue in this chapter, all characters (but Grace and Philip), the main story line and settings belong to the magnificent Cassie Clare. Grace, Philip and my own story plot belong to me. The Infernal Devices do not belong to me.

A/N: Okay so I know in the book Mortmain's cavern collapses after he dies but I'm going to change that in order to fit with the story ;).

Picture above is of Jem...he's never been Brother Zachariah to me :(:(:(:(

Song below I can honestly say is beautiful. Check it out if you want.

Enjoy the chapter!

'I sit and wait
Does an angel contemplate my fate
And do they know
The places where we go
When we're grey and old
'Cause I have been told
That salvation lets their wings unfold
So when I'm lying in my bed
Thoughts running through my head
And I feel the love is dead
I'm loving angels instead

And through it all she offers me protection
A lot of love and affection
Whether I'm right or wrong
And down the waterfall
Wherever it may take me
I know that life won't break me
When I come to call, she won't forsake me
I'm loving angels instead.'

-*-*-*-*- Grace -*-*-*-*-
Grace gasped and sat bolt right up, coughing as she tried to get air through to her lungs. Slowly and painfully, she rose to her feet and looked at her surroundings.

She was in a field, the grass green and lush. The sky was bursting with the colours of sunset as golden clouds zipped across it so fast that it was almost as if time had been sped up. Wind whipped through her hair and tore at her clothes.

Where was she? How on Earth did she get here? But a sick feeling was in her stomach. By the Angel, was she dead?

A sudden screeching sound make her jump and turn to her right. There was large crack in the ground, a deep canyon filled with red light that spilled over the edges. Shadows danced across the grass. Grace advanced slowly, wishing she had a weapon to defend herself with. Heat radiated from the canyon as she leant over to look-

"I wouldn't do that, my dear Grace," a soft voice called out. A hand, that was all of a sudden, placed on her shoulder, drew her away from the canyon and back to where she had started.

Grace looked up at Ithuriel's kind face in shock and wonder. He was dressed in flowing white robes tinted with gold that matched his brilliant golden wings.

"Ithuriel?" She asked. The angel smiled.

"Yes, my dear," he said. She put a hand to her forehead.

"God, now I know I'm dead," she breathed. The angel's kind smile faded as he nodded.

"Yes," he said. "You have passed from life."

"What happened?" Grace asked. "I-all I remember is just white." Ithuriel looked thoughtful that took a seat on the grass. Grace did the same and waited for the angel to explain.

"Many years ago," Ithuriel said. "I was trapped in Tessa's clockwork angel by the warlock John Shade."

"Mortmain's father," Grace whispered.

"Some years later, Mortmain gave the necklace to Tessa's mother as a gift," the angel continued. "Then, he paid an shape shifting demon to impersonate her husband. She became pregnant." Ithuriel hesitated before he continued.

"But there was a catch," he said. "Tessa's mother was never meant to be Elizabeth Gray, but to be Adele Starkweather. The infants were swapped when they were young."

"Wait, are you saying that Elizabeth Gray was a Shadowhunter?" Grace exclaimed.

"She didn't know," Ithuriel said. "She had no runes upon her skin which was why Tessa could be born."

"Where do you come into it?" Grace asked.

"In order for the child to be born safely," the angel said, "I was given to Elizabeth Gray and she wore me throughout her pregnancy. I kept her and the child safe. Afterwards, I protected Tessa."

"Which is why she is the angel's ward," Grace whispered. "Why you appeared in my dream and Tessa could help me."

"She freed me when she Changed into me," Ithuriel replied. "And this is why I am here." He stood and began to walk forward, pointing to the canyon.

"That, is the last remnant of Yanluo," he said as Grace stood. "I ripped it from your soul during the last moments of your life. But, as you know, the rest of your soul went with it as you died." The realisation suddenly hit Grace and she staggered back, feeling very dizzy.

"I-I don't understand," she stammered, but the suspicion was there. Benedict's conversation with Yanluo when they had fought in the Lightwood gardens. He had said Yanluo was to be expelled from the Earth, and now, it had happened. Ithuriel smiled.

"You are free, Grace Carstairs," he said gently. A complete shock and happiness so great almost threatened to overwhelm her but she pushed it down.

"But I am also dead," Grace pointed out. Ithuriel spread his golden wings wide, radiating a golden light of deadly glory. He looked very much like one of God's angels now.

"I am here to offer you a choice, Grace Emma Carstairs," he boomed, his voice shaking the very ground Grace stood on. "The Angels of Heaven have decided to reward you sacrifice, if you so choose to take our gift." He stepped aside but the light continued to blind Grace. She held up a hand to shield her eyes.

Two silhouettes were walking towards her out from the light. As they got closer, the light faded and finally Grace could see who they were. They were wearing soft, white clothing and both looked younger, no wrinkles evident on their face. No scars from Yanluo's torture were visible.

"We're so proud of you, Gracey," her mother said, smiling brilliantly. "You've been so brave."

"Mother?" Grace asked, completely shocked. "Father?" They smiled.

"Yes, sweetheart," her father said gently. Tears slid down her face as she ran forward and threw herself into her parent's arms, hugging them tight.

"This is real, isn't it?" Grace asked. "You're really here."

"Of course," her father said. "But we never really left you."

"I wish Jem could see this," Grace whispered, looking down. Her parents glanced at each other sadly.

"James is on a different path now," her mother said. "He made his decision to protect you. I know you do not understand why he did it, but you mean so much to him. He would sacrifice his happiness for you."

"But I...I died," she murmured. "I wasted his decision." Her mother's face twisted in a painful expression and she looked up to Ithuriel.

"As I said before, Grace," the angel said. "I offer you a choice." He waved his hand and a swirl of light appeared in the air. The vision soon became clear as the light faded.

Jem was kneeling in the cavern in his parchment robes, cradling Grace in his arms. Philip crouched a little way off, his face in his hands as he tried to cope. Will was holding an unconscious Tessa across the room but his tear filled eyes were on Grace and Jem. The rest of the Shadowhunters were standing a little way off, Magnus with his head bowed and Henry and Charlotte holding each other. Sophie was crying into Gideon's arms while Cecily slumped against the wall next to a very shocked looking Gabriel.

"Your death affects them all," Ithuriel said quietly. "You touched the lives of many, Grace, and they all are grieving for you."

Grace's parents came to stand with her, her mother's hand on her shoulder. "I didn't realise," Grace whispered.

"The Angels of Heaven have agreed to offer you a second chance," Ithuriel said. "Mortmain broke of ancient laws when he brought Mrs Black back from death. The balance of light and dark must be returned. If you so wish, we have agreed to return you to your life...but there is a price to be paid for this."

"I don't understand," Grace said.

"This is the decision you must make," Ithuriel said. "You can either stay with your parents, or rejoin the life you left."

Grace looked back at the vision and at the family she had left behind. They all looked so desperate and it tore her apart to watch. Her gaze went to Jem on the floor, holding her body and hugging her close to him. She could see his shoulders shaking as he sobbed.

How could she abandon him when he had sacrificed so much for her? What kind of Shadowhunter would she be if she left them alone?

"I can't leave them," Grace whispered. She turned to her parents. "I can't abandon him. Not now when he needs me the most." Her parents looked at each other then gave her a sad smile.

"We knew that you wouldn't leave them," her mother said. "We expected nothing less of you."

"I'm sorry," she said. "I know after all we've been through, we should stay together...but we're not together. I can't leave him."

"Don't be sorry, sweetheart," her father said.

"If we were honest with ourselves, we always knew what you were going to choose," her mother said with a smile. "Just-just look after your brother and tell him we love him. Don't let him push the ones he loves away. Keep a tight hold of each other because...because you'll need each other and family is more important than anything."

Grace nodded with tears in her eyes and threw her arms around her parents. They hugged her, kissing her forehead. "I hope we'll all be together again one day," she sobbed.

"We will," her mother said. "You'll cross the river some day."

"Good luck, sweetheart," her father said. "We're so proud of the brilliant, brave and strong woman you've become." Grace nodded with tears in her eyes but stepped back, turning to Ithuriel.

"I'm ready," she said. "I'm prepared to pay whatever price I have to pay, as long as I can keep them safe." The angel nodded gravely.

"The road ahead will be tough," he said. "And your task will be long. But if anyone can do it, you can." He reached out with his hand. Grace locked eyes with her parents one last time before Ithuriel touched her forehead and the world exploded into light and colour.

-*-*-*-*- Jem -*-*-*-*-
Jem cradled Grace in his arms, pressing her into his shoulder so no one could take her away from him. Tears were flowing freely down his scarred cheeks and some part of him wondered if a Silent Brother had ever cried before.

The world around him was quiet but he knew that others were grieving. The soft sounds of sobbing were almost inaudible.

Jem looked down at Grace's face. She looked so young, as if she was finally at peace after years of torment. From across the room, Will handed Tessa to Magnus and slowly crawled over to Jem, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Let her go, Jem," he whispered. "Let her be at peace."

"I can't," Jem sobbed. "I can't. God, it hurts so much, Will. Why does it have to end like this? Why couldn't she be happy?"

"She's free now," Will said softly. "Just let her go. Let her go, like you asked her to." Jem finally looked up at him and into the familiar blues eyes that he had always shared his pain with. They were fragmented with grief, just like his. He knew Will was right. He had to let go.

Jem bent down and kissed Grace's head.

"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry. I couldn't save you and I promised I would." He took a shaky breath. "I love you, Gracey. I'm so sorry."

Suddenly, Grace gasped and sat bolt right up, coughing violently. She then collapsed again and Jem caught her, staring at her in shock.

The rest of the Shadowhunters stirred and murmured in disbelief. Cecily whooped with joy and hugged Gabriel, rushing to hug Sophie afterwards. Will shook Jem's shoulders. "She's alive!" He cried. "Thank the Angel, she's alive!"

"Gracey?" Jem asked, ignoring the commotion behind him "But...how? You were dead. I-Idon't understand." Grace gave him a small smile but her eyes were distant.

"I saw mother and father, Jem," she whispered. "I saw our parents."

"What do you mean?" Jem asked. But Grace's eyes had fluttered shut and she fell unconscious. The whole cavern began to shake and rumble, the automatons dead bodies rattling on the floor.

"We've got to go," Will said, running to where Magnus was holding Tessa and scooping her up. "Magnus, make a portal now!" Jem picked up Grace and ran to where Magnus had made the portal with Henry's help. The Shadowhunters leapt through it, the Lightwood brothers carrying Henry between them.

As soon as they had landed in the Institute, the portal collapsed behind them. Dozens of Silent Brothers were there to meet them and they swarmed over Henry and Tessa.

"Brother Zachariah," Brother Enoch said. "You must return to the Silent City."

"But my sister-"

"I will take care of her," Brother Enoch said. "Go. Now." Jem reluctantly handed Grace to the Silent Brother then turned to walk uo the steps.

"James," a fragile voice called. Jem turned and saw Will across the room. He was just standing there, isolated from everyone else but staring at Jem. "Please, James..."

Jem looked at Tessa and Henry and Grace. He so desperately wanted to help them...but he couldn't.

"I can't, Will," Jem whispered. "I'm sorry." Then be turned and went up the steps to return to the Silent City, leaving Will and the Institute behind.

Below is the blurb for my next TID fanfic: 'Finding Will Herondale'. Let me know what you think!

Finding Will Herondale:

"Will, thank the Angel you are awake," Jem sighed, going to his bedside. "How are you feeling?" Will stared at him, the fear of God etched all over his face.

"I-I don't know you," he stammered in a very un-Will-like way. "Who are you? Who-Who am I?"
***
One night, Will goes missing and does not return. Sick with worry, Jem and Tessa desperately try to find him, searching anywhere and everywhere for information but to no avail. Then one month later, by utter chance, they find him, bloody and beaten, in Hyde park. Both Jem and Tessa are relieved that they found him but a new sinister twist is revealed.

Will has lost his memory.

He was no recollection of his life at all. He doesn't recognise Charlotte or Henry or Jessamine or the Lightwood brothers. He doesn't remember his sister Cecily or his love for Tessa. Even Jem is a stranger to him.

Tessa and Jem have to find a way to get their Will back. But with Mortmain closing in and a new enemy to face, will it be too late to reach him?

So what do you think??? Let me know in the comments!
