Chapter 21- Fight Till The Last Breath

Disclaimer: all characters (apart from Philip and Grace), settings and the main plot belong to the amazing Cassandra Clare. Only Grace, Philip and my own story plot and sub-plots belong to me. I do not own the Infernal Devices no matter how much I wish I did ;)

A/N: Yep, more tissues will be needed in this chapter. Maybe more so than before...probably...definitely...I am warning you...

'This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me.'

*-*-*-*- Grace -*-*-*-*-
Grace stepped through the portal and looked around at the cavern. It was huge, the ceiling so high that she couldn't even see the top. Cecily was in front of her, also looking in wonder. "I'll give this to Mortmain," she said. "He knows how to pick a good secret lair." Grace rolled her eyes at the comment.

"Focus, Cecily," she said. "We've got to find Will and Tessa." As soon as everyone came through the portal, Charlotte took charge and split off everybody into groups. They had half an hour to search for Will and Tessa before meeting back in the central cavern.

Grace went off on her own to the west side of the mountain. Before she left, she glanced at Philip who gave her a grim nod before he went to the east.

Walking down the corridors with only her witchlight to guide her, Grace watched carefully for any attackers while checking every room for Will or Tessa. She passed a room with a desk inside then another one that was completely bare. When she turned the corner into another corridor, she spotted Magnus leaning up against the wall.

"Ah, Grace," he said. "I've found them."

"Are they in there?" She asked, nodding at the door that was in the wall.

"Yes," he replied. "They are just...clothing themselves." Grace raised an eyebrow but said nothing. She leant up against the wall next to the warlock, twirling a knife in her hands to keep herself busy.

"I never said thank you," she told him. Magnus gave her a quizzical look.

"For what?"

"For looking after me," she said softly. "You've always been there. Looking back now it was clear. I just never realised." Magnus chuckled.

"You're only the second Shadowhunter who has had ever thanked me sincerely," he said thoughtfully.

"Who was the first?" Grace asked with a grin, the first real grin she had smiled since Jem...

"That idiot," Magnus said, nodding his head at the door which had just opened. Will stepped out, followed by Tessa, both of them dressed in gear. He froze when he looked up at Grace.

"Hey, Will," she said softly.

"Grace..." he whispered. Within two seconds, he had crossed the corridor an wrapped his arms around her, hugging her so tightly that she didn't think he would let go.

"I'm all right, Will," she mumbled. But she knew she wasn't, and Will knew it too. He finally let go of her, but still checked her over.

"Will, don't worry about me," she said. She drew a couple of blades and handed them to Will before he could say anything more. "Come on, we've got to find the others." The four of them started running, and Grace fell in step with Will as she had so many times before.

"I need to know, Grace," he said. "Did he...did he suffer?" Grace hesitated.

"I don't know," she said. Will suddenly screeched to a stop. Grace pulled up as well and turned to face him as Tessa and Magnus waited at the top of the corridor.

"What do you mean, you don't know?" Will asked, his voice wavering. Grace closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

"Will, there's something you should know," she started. "Jem-" Suddenly, a scream ripped through the air. Grace drew in a sharp breath as Will turned pale.

"Cecily," he whispered then bolted, Grace not far behind him. Magnus and Tessa were racing to keep up with the two Shadowhunters as they rocketed down the corridors. Soon, they entered a large cavern filled with automatons. The rest of the Institute's inhabitants were fighting for their lives in the middle where dozens of automatons had come to life.

"No seraph blades!" Will was shouting. "Don't use any seraph blades!" Grace watched as Cecily pulled back her blade to try and stop it hitting an automaton but she was too late. The blade crumbled to dust and she ducked, avoiding the automaton's axe.

Both she and Will plunged into battle, slicing at metal and fighting their way to the rest of the Shadowhunters. The world was moving so fast around Grace as she ducked and weaved through the automatons, hacking them to pieces with Jem's sword-cane. She was trying to get to Charlotte who was cradling Henry on the floor of the cavern, blood trickling from the corners of his mouth. She prayed that he wasn't dead because she didn't think she could lose anyone else.

Will was making his way to Cecily who had got cornered by two automatons on the other side of the room. She was fiercely stabbing with two daggers which she was brought from her belt but she wasn't causing enough damage. One of the metal monsters swung its arm and smashed her, knocking her to the floor. Will cried out but he was too far away to help. Grace made a step forward but then one of the Silent Brothers suddenly appeared in front of Cecily, blocking the automaton's sword slicing Cecily in two with his staff.

The Silent Brother swept the legs of the automaton and it clattered to the floor. As he raised his staff to finish it off, the other automaton came up behind him and grabbed him, lifting him off his feet. The Silent Brother's hood fell from his face as he struggled and the world went quiet. The air rushed from Grace's lungs as suddenly, the proud smile from the Silent Brother back at the Institute made sense.

It was Jem.

Grace was now running, hacking at the clockwork creatures to clear a path to her brother. Will got there before her, stabbing the automaton which fell then pulling Jem from the wreckage. By the time Grace reached the two boys, they were staring at each other, Will in shock and Jem emotionless.

"Jem," Grace whispered. Jem looked at her, his eyes wide with sorrow. She shook her head and a single work passed her lips. "Why?" Will turned to her, his mouth agape. He knew now that she had known.

"Why?"  She asked again, more fiercely.

"If I could have told the both of you-" Jem started but an automaton got inbetween them. Grace cried out as it slashed her arm but Will and Jem both stabbed at it, hacking it to pieces. Grace grabbed her sword and whipped around, facing another machine, forgetting about Jem momentarily.

Everyone was fighting furiously but it wasn't to take the mountain, it was for their own lives. Grace backed off from three huge automatons that were advancing on her. Her back struck someone else and she realised it was Philip.

"We can't keep this up!" He yelled, slicing the legs off another machine. "We have to get out of here now." Grace looked around at the rest of Institute's inhabitants. They were all becoming cut off from each other as the automatons drove them apart.

There was no way they could win this.

"Philip," she yelled over the noise clashing metal. "I have an idea!" He looked at her and for the first time, she could really see the real Philip through all the blood, dirt and grime. He was brave and selfless despite what everyone had said. He had fought here today even if he wasn't a Shadowhunter anymore. That was true courage.

"No!" he cried, his eyes going wide and shaking his head. "Grace, don't do it!"

"It's the only way we can destroy them all!" she shouted. Before he could stop her, she pushed through the chaos to the middle of the room. Jem and Will both looked up from their fights and watched her, their lips shaping warnings.

"Grace!" Jem yelled. "Grace, no!" But she ignored him. She knew this was the only way to save everyone. She was going to give up to Yanluo one last time.

"All right, Yanluo," she muttered. "We both hate Mortmain. He has torn my family apart and betrayed you. Let's show him what real power looks like." She felt Yanluo's presence in her head but this time, it was different. They were working together.

"For once, Grace Carstairs, we have an agreement,"  it hissed in her head. Its consciousness flooded her but it wasn't overwhelming. Her vision became sharper and tinted with red but everything was seen in a new light. The world slowed as every glint of a sword caught her eye.

The vision of a demon.

Her hands burst into flames, lighting up the sword in her hand like the weapon of hell. The automatons around her backed away slowly, but no thought of mercy entered her mind. She was both Grace and Yanluo, and they would take their revenge.

Screaming a battle cry, she spun and immediately sliced the heads off dozens of automatons surrounding her. Their metal melted as the flames of hell torched them. Grace launched herself onto the metal creatures, slicing and hacking with ten times the speed she had done before. Fire swirled around her as she and Yanluo worked together to pick off the automatons one by one.

Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Jem, Will, Philip and the rest of the Shadowhunters running towards Charlotte and Henry to escape in the portal. They all were watching her in shock as she laid waste to Mortmain's army. But right then, Grace didn't care what they thought, as long as they stayed alive and escaped.

"STOP!" A deep voice rang out, a voice by Grace and Yanluo knew very well indeed. Mortmain stood on a raised platform in the rock of the mountain wearing a dark suit. "That is enough!" The automatons immediately stopped fighting and snapped their heads towards their master.

Grace started towards the Shadowhunters but the automatons moved to block her path. "Ah, I wouldn't be doing that, Miss Carstairs," Mortmain chided. Grace made a growling sound in her throat. This was Mortmain's plan, to cut her off from the rest of the Shadowhunters.

"Where is Miss Gray?" Mortmain called. "Bring her to me!" Out of the shadows behind him, a huge automaton appeared with Tessa in its claws.

"Tessa!" Will cried, stepping forward but Grace threw out a hand.

"Don't move, Will!" she yelled, not quite recognising her own voice but fearing that the automatons would hurt him. Jem caught hold of Will's wrist and dragged him back, his eyes never leaving Grace. He was horrified, Grace thought. Horrified at what she had done.

"This is Armaros, Miss Carstairs," Mortmain said, gesturing to the huge automaton holding Tessa. "He replaced you as the leader of my army, Yanluo." Yanluo growled.

"You broke off your deal, Mortmain," it said. "And you cannot break deals with hell so easily." Mortmain merely laughed.

"I see your loyalty has changed," he chuckled.

"She offered me the better deal," Yanluo replied, grinning wickedly. "And I know Grace Carstairs well enough to know that when she says she'll kill you, she will go through with her promise." Mortmain's smile disappeared but he returned to Tessa.

"Now, Miss Gray," he said. "You will either become my wife or all your friends shall die. It is your choice." Tessa looked panicked.

"Please, turn your hand from them," she said. "Let them learn your teachings but set them free. I-I will stay with you." Mortmain thought for a moment and gestured for Armaros to bring Tessa forward.

"I will keep them as our prisoners," he said, grinning. "Their imprisonment will keep you pleasant and obedient. But if you ever try to escape, Miss Gray, I will kill them." Tessa nodded and came forward to Mortmain. As she did, she brought her hand to her clockwork angel necklace and closed her fist around it. Grace's eyes narrowed.

Suddenly, Tessa cried out and the room exploded into light. Grace watched in amazement as Tessa began to stretch and grow, becoming as tall as the cavern itself. Golden wings sprouted from her back as bright, white light radiated from her. She screamed deadly glory.

Everything finally made sense to Grace. That first night when she had tried to touch Tessa's angel but was burned instead. The angel Ithuriel's appearances in her dreams. Tessa being the 'angel's ward' that freed her.

Tessa's necklace was Ithuriel's prison.

Grace was burning, every inch of her skin in agony. Yanluo was screaming in her head, begging for mercy as they both watched Ithuriel crush Mortmain and his clockwork creatures shatter. She could hear Jem and Philip calling for her but there was nothing she could do.

Collapsing to her knees, Grace felt an excruciating tugging from her soul. The fire of hell mixed with the fire of heaven but was losing the fight. She was aware that her skin was steaming. The angel looked down on her, its face kind and gentle, but firm.

"You have suffered too long, Grace Carstairs," he said, his voice booming in her ears. "I release you from your pain." He reached out and touch Grace on the forehead. She screamed in agony, her arms throwing out wide as Ithuriel ripped Yanluo from her soul. Then, lightning shot through her mind and everything went white.

-*-*-*-*- Jem -*-*-*-*-

As soon as Tessa changed back to herself, Jem shot across the room to where Grace had collapsed. She was still, her skin steaming and her gear in tatters. Crimson blood ran from her nose and the corners of her mouth, a stark contrast to the paleness of her skin.

Jem dropped to his knees, pulling his sister on his lap. "Come on, Gracey," he whispered. "Wake up. Wake up, please, for me." With shaking fingers, he reached out to find a pulse in her neck but then froze. The world around him crashed down as he cried out, pressing Grace's head to his shoulder and holding her tight. "No. No, no, no!" he screamed. "Please God, no! Bring her back. Please, bring her back!"

He was aware of Philip standing motionless beside him in complete shock.

Will was holding Tessa on the other side of the room but he was looking at Jem and Grace, his shoulders shaking.

Tears slipped down Jem's scarred cheeks as he sobbed, whispering her name over and over as if it could wake her. But it was no use. The thing he feared most had come to pass and the pain was unbearable.

Grace was dead.
