Chapter 16- Yanluo
Disclaimer: SOME of the dialogue in this chapter, the main story plot (not my one) and the characters (apart from Grace and Philip) belong to the awesome mind of Cassandra Clare. Grace, Philip and my adaptions belong to me. So basically anything that isn't in the Infernal Devices.

'She's got lions in her heart
A fire in her soul he's a got a beast
In his belly that's so hard to control
Cause they've taken too much hits, taking blow by blow
Now light a match, stand back, watch them explode
When you've been fighting for it all your life
You've been struggling to make things right
That's a how a superhero learns to fly
(Every day, every hour, turn that pain into power)'

-*-*-*-*- Grace -*-*-*-*-
"No, please stop it," Tessa said. She was looking at Grace with fear and uncertainty. As if Grace would know what to do. She was too busy trying not to faint.
"I won't hurt you or your friends," Mortmain said. "As long as you do as you're told. It's as simple as that."
"Don't trust him, Tessa," Grace groaned. She was silenced by another brutal punch by an automaton.
"You'll still hurt Grace, though," Tessa said, retreating backwards. "You need her too. You'll still hurt her."
"Is one life, a life who Philip tells me doesn't like you very much, worth the two lives of those girls outside?" Mortmain asked, an empty smile coming to his lips. Grace was silently shaking her head. She knew that only one of them was walking out of here, and she was determined to make sure it was Tessa. Mortmain passed the medallion to Philip and nodded to the automatons holding Grace. They unceremoniously dropped her like a sack of potatoes and walked out of the Sanctuary, leaving Grace crumpled on the floor.
Immediately, Grace started crawling towards the knife Jessamine had dropped but Philip kicked it out of her reach. It skidded to the fountain. He pulled her to her feet, an arm around her chest and held the medallion in front of her. It was far enough away that it didn't do any significant damage, but close enough that it made her extremely uncomfortable. The voice of Yanluo was whispering to her.
'Let me out. Free me.'
Images and memories flashed in her mind of Tessa, of Will, of Magnus and of Sophie. Most of all, of Jem. She could see all the times she, Will and Jem had laughed and joked. She could see all the times she had held Jem as he coughed and choked on his own blood. She could see all the times she had watched Will, the sadness and the emptiness behind his eyes. Grace often thought that when people said their lives flashed before their eyes, they were talking nonsense. Maybe she was wrong.
"Now Miss Gray," Mortmain said. He held out a golden watch that he'd just taken from his pocket. "I want you to take this."
"Why?" Tessa asked.
"Because I want you to Change," Mortmain said. "This watch used to belong to someone very special to me..." Mortmain's voice droned on but Grace turned her attention to Philip. There must be a way to reach him, make him see sense.
"Why are you doing this, Philip?" she asked. "Why side with him? He hates Shadowhunters. Why are you doing this to us? To me?"
"The Clave stole my childhood from me, Grace," he said in a low voice. "All I did was stop a demon from possessing my brother, nothing that complicated. I thought you would understand."
"The Clave have stolen a lot of things, Philip," Grace said. "They've done a lot of things that were wrong. But they aren't evil. They're just doing what they think is best for everyone."
"The Clave have done more to my family than you know," Philip said. "If there was another way to get Yanluo's allegiance without hurting you, Grace, I would do it. For a long time now I...I have...I have loved you. You were the only thing that kept me going. The reason why I went to the Magister so you didn't have to suffer the Clave anymore."
"How is killing me helping me escape the Clave?" Grace asked. "How is killing me showing that you love me?" She felt Philip shift uncomfortably.
"I wrote the letter from the Clave so you could get a sense for what it was like to be free from them," Philip said. "I stopped the automatons when they went wrong the night they kidnapped you. It is true that the mundane man was killed by the automatons, not you . The Magister thought it might be a good way to convince you but I was against it. Everything I have done was for you, Grace."
"But it will still kill me."
"It won't kill you, I promise that. I would have never accepted the Magister's deal if you had to die. I couldn't bring myself to do that. The Magister has found a way to free Yanluo that won't kill you. Yes, you won't be in control of your own body for a while but as soon as we win, the Magister has promised you'll be free from Yanluo forever. We can be together and free. But the Clave have to be stopped for that. The Magister has promised that he will show Shadowhunters what a true leader is like. He will wipe out everyone who doesn't comply."
"You'll be killing everyone, Philip," Grace said. "Don't be stupid. Your precious Magister lied to you about me. He's tricking and manipulating you to get what he wants. There is no way to free Yanluo fully without killing me, and even if you could, it would kill Jem and I without hesitation." Philip was silent. Had she convinced him?
"Philip, if you really love me, don't do this," she said. "I can never love someone who would put my family in danger."
"No," he said. "I trust the Magister. He set me free. If I can't be with you, then I...I am ready to sacrifice my own desires if it will save the world. That's how much I love you Grace. You are literally worth the world to me." Grace closed her eyes.
"I'm sorry then, Philip," she whispered.
"For what?" Philip asked, a confused tone to his voice.
"For not realising what was going on in that traitorous, deluded, cowardly brain of yours."
"Your choice, Miss Gray," Mortmain said. "Do as I say." Tessa looked at Grace, absolutely terrified. The girl had obviously never sacrificed something that meant so much to her before. Grace took a deep breath and looked up to the ceiling. Well, there were probably much worse ways to go. Jem and Will would deal with the demon, as they promised they would if it ever happened. And Jem could be happy with Tessa without her complicating things. Will would look after them. He loved them both too much to sit back.
"Tessa," Grace said. "Be brave. Be Boadicea. Don't give up. Not like I did." Grace gestured with her eyes at the knife at Tessa's feet. Tessa glanced down then back at Grace. Their gazes locked and they instantly understood each other.
"No," Tessa said to Mortmain. "I won't do it. Not unless you tell me what you mean when you say you made me. Why am I like this? Why is it that you need my power so badly? What do you plan to force me to do? You are doing more than just building an army, that is obvious."
"Your friends will suffer for this," Mortmain said, "While you watch." He started towards the door.
"Now, Tessa!" Grace shouted. Tessa seized up the knife and pointed it at her own heart.
"Stop, Mr Mortmain or I will plunge this knife right through my own heart," she yelled. The blood drained from Mortmain's face. For the first time, Grace could actually see uncertainty in his eyes but it was quickly replaced by cold laughter.
"No you won't, Miss Gray," he said. "You may be a warlock but you are still a delicate female. And there is another reason you won't." He strode towards Grace, snatching the medallion from Philip's hand and wrapped the chain around her neck. It must have been enchanted because the small silver chain transformed into a thicker one, like the chains used on ships. It latched onto her and refused to let go.
Philip let go of her in shock as Grace fell to her hands and knees, one hand clawing the medallion. She looked up. "Tessa," she choked out. "Tell Jem I'm sorry." The she collapsed to the floor, writhing and screaming as Yanluo made it's first appearance in years...
-*-*-*-*- Tessa -*-*-*-*-
Tessa watched, horrified as Grace arched her back, a bloodcurdling scream coming from her mouth. The pain she must have been going through look unbearable.
Philip looked ashen. "I thought you said you had a way to save her," he said to Mortmain.
"The demon won't kill her, even if it says it will," Mortmain replied but Tessa could see that he was lying. "It won't have full control until I've bound it together, then Grace will be our weapon. When we defeat the Shadowhunters, you may take her where ever you like. I give you my word." Philip nodded but he still looked unsure.
"Grace," Tessa gasped. "Grace, listen to me. You have to fight it. You are the strongest person I know. No one could have fought it for years but you have. Just one more time! Don't let Jem see you die like this!"
"Ha! She can't, Miss Gray," Mortmain said. "The power of Yanluo is too strong for her to contain. She was a fool to ever think she could. This medallion draws on all the power of Yanluo, not the tiny fragment that Miss Carstairs has tried to hard to keep hidden. She really has no chance."
Grace had stopped moving, lying motionless on the floor. Tessa feared for a second that she was dead but then her eyes snapped open.
Bright red eyes.
A slow, evil grin spread across her face.
"Free," she whispered, but not in Grace's voice. It was a deep and gravelly voice. One of evil. One that could only have belonged to a demon.
Grace rose, looking down at herself then at Mortmain. "You said you would join me again," Grace/Yanluo snarled. "You said you would make my consciousness whole again."
"Once I have finished here, I will," Mortmain said. "But you are my slave now. You do as I say."
"The Carstairs girl fights still," Yanluo hissed. "I can feel her. You must hurry so I can kill her and her brother once and for all." Grace wasn't dead yet. She was still fighting it. But if Yanluo became whole again, then she would die. Yanluo would have full control over her body and she would be an empty shell.
"But Magister," Philip said. "You said you wouldn't allow her to be killed."
"Mr Blackthorn," Mortmain laughed. "Did you honestly think you could trust me? I'm afraid there is no way for Grace to survive Yanluo becoming whole again once the procedure has been completed. You should have known that, being her doctor for so many years." Philip balled up his fists but he remained still and silent. Tessa wanted to scream at him to help her but she knew he was a coward. There was nothing he would do to help her.
"You see, Miss Gray?" Mortmain said. "There is no escape from me. Even the infamous Grace Carstairs couldn't. Just put down the knife and I will tell you what you want to know." Tessa hesitated. It would be so easy to just give up. What did her brother say? She would be treated like a queen.
But no. She could hear Grace's words ringing in her head:
"Be brave. Be Boadicea. Don't give up. Not like I did."
Tessa wasn't going to waste Grace's sacrifice. To her surprise, she found herself inspired by Grace. Despite what she said, she never had given up.
Never.
"You're wrong, Mr Mortmain," Tessa said. "I won't give myself up to you." Mortmain yelled at Grace/Yanluo to stop her but it was too late. Tessa spun away and plunged the knife into her as she Changed. She was vaguely aware of Grace- the real Grace with Grace's voice- screaming her name before sinking to the floor again, the medallion breaking in two and the chains snapping. There was a last roar of fury from Yanluo before Tessa blacked out.
***
Tessa came to again with Will holding her tight to his body, whispering her name. Mortmain and Philip had gone, disappeared into the night. "Will?" she asked. "Will, is that you?"
"Tessa?" Will gasped. "You're alive!? How-?"
"I Changed, Will," Tessa said. "I tricked the Magister." Suddenly, the realization came to her. "Will, where's Grace !?" She struggled up, out of Will's arms and surveyed the Sanctuary.
Grace was crumpled on the floor near by behind the fountain, her gear in tatters and her skin steaming. Her eyes were fluttering and flickering red then back to brown. Will was there before Tessa, skidding to a stop and pulling Grace onto his lap. "Grace?" he said. "Come on, Gracey, don't die on me. Please don't die. Please," He noticed the broken medallion by her side and gave Tessa a questioning look.
"Mortmain put it on her," Tessa said, taking Grace's hand. "I don't know...the demon, Yanluo...it took control." Will cursed. "Is she going to be all right?" Will had pain in his eyes.
"I don't know," he whispered. "It's never been this bad."
"But her medicine-"
"There's no more," Will said, shaking his head. "We need to get Jem. If this is it, he needs to be-" Grace gasped and grabbed onto Will's hand. The hand Tessa was holding had a grip like iron.
"Will?" she choked.
"Yeah, it's me, Gracey," he said softly. "You're going to be all right. You're going to be just fine. Just hold on while I get help. Just hold on."
"I can't fight it for much longer," she croaked. "The medallion, it gave it an energy boost. It's too strong; I can't control it."
"Yes, you can," Will said. "You always have. Don't give up now." Grace had tears spilling out of her eyes.
"There's only one way to stop it," she said. She looked at Tessa. "Look after them both...just while I'm gone. Make sure they don't do anything stupid."
"Grace-"
"Just promise me. Please Tessa. I-I don't trust anyone else with this. I don't trust anyone else with my brothers." Tessa nodded.
"I will. I promise," she said. Tears were in her eyes now. Grace and her had had a rocky beginning, but now...
"Will," Grace whispered. "Go to Magnus. He'll help you. You have to go to Magnus if you are ever going to be free to love her." This confused Tessa. Love who?
"No, Gracey, what are you doing?" Will asked, desperation and panic seeping into his voice.
"I have to push it down," she said. "But it will drag me down with it."
"But that means-"
"Yes, I know. Nightmares and torture...perhaps something even worse," Grace said. "But I'm ready to face it. I have to be. It's the only way to save you."
"Don't leave us," Will said desperately. "Please, don't go. We can't do this without you, Gracey. We need you." Grace smiled a sad smile.
"You'll be all right, Will," she said. "Just be there when I wake up and...be there for Jem. He won't understand. I don't know what he'll do." Will hesitated but nodded.
"Do what you have to do," he choked out. "We'll be there for you, every step of the way." Grace nodded. Her face scrunched up in pain one last time before she was still, her breathing just about audible. Tessa was crying now and Will just stared in disbelief, looking empty and haunted.
That was when Jem burst into the Sanctuary, his eyes frantic and scared. He saw Tessa and Will kneeling on the floor and Will holding an unconscious Grace.
"Jem, I-" Will started.
"No," Jem whispered. He sank to the floor, curled up his knees and screamed with rage. Grace's crystal flashed red and green while Jem's remained lifeless.

So, one more chapter for Clockwork Angel then I'll be moving onto Clockwork Prince. The next chapter will only be a short-ish one so kind of like an epilogue then at the end I'll put a blurb for Clockwork Prince. The Clockwork Prince will be in this same book so you don't have to go searching for the next one.
Thank you so much for all your support so far! I've been loving writing this and you guys just add the cherry on the cake! Or is it icing?
See you next chapter!
