Chapter 15- Fire
Disclaimer: SOME of the dialogue in this chapter, all settings, characters (apart from Grace and Philip) and the main story line belongs to the amazing Cassie Clare. I only own Grace, Philip and my own original story line. I (sadly) do not own the Infernal Devices.
A/N: picture above is of Jem played by Mitch Hewer. Anyone have any other ideas for who could play Jem? Let me know your thoughts!

'Just like fire, burning out the way
If I can light the world up for just one day
Watch this madness, colorful charade
No one can be just like me any way
Just like magic, I'll be flying free
I'mma disappear when they come for me
I kick that ceiling, what you gonna say?
No one can be just like me any way.'

-*-*-*-*- Grace -*-*-*-*-
"You get Jem, I'll deal with that thing!" Will shouted before leaping off the gallery and onto the shoulder of the huge automaton. "And hurry!" He yelled at her then proceeded to dodge the automaton's arm as it tried to swipe him off its shoulder.
Grace took a step back and a deep breath before running and jumping off the gallery. She flipped over in the air, landing nimbly on the gangway. The first automaton was on her in an instant, slicing its sword at her head. She ducked and slid on her knees under it, slashing with her daggers. It dropped as its legs fell from underneath it and she finished it off with a stab to its throat, twisting her blade as she yanked it back.
The next metal creature was a bit smarter than its counter part. It stab at Grace, forcing her to parry and spin to the left. She blocked its next strike but it caught her arm with its sword. She cried out as her skin was sliced but ducked under its metal arm and sheared off its head. Oil splattered her gear as it collapsed to her feet.
She turned to face the last one which was holding Jem. "Let him go," Grace snarled.
"Grace Carstairs," it screeched. "The Magister knows your weakness. It will not be long before he takes the demon you keep locked away and destroy all Shadowhunters and everything you hold dear. But he is willing to offer you a bargain. Surrender yourself and he'll let your brother and your friends live."
"Grumph, no," Jem cried, his voice muffled.
"Why does everyone keep thinking I'll take a deal?" Grace asked then threw her dagger. It went straight through the automaton's head and she watched it tumble off the gangway, shattering as it fell to the floor. Grace drew out her steel and frantically drew open runes on Jem's shackles. They burst open and he ripped off his gag, smothering her with a hug.
"You're awake," he whispered. "I knew you could do it." Grace drew away and punched him in the shoulder.
"You are an idiot!" She said. "What the hell were you thinking, going after the Magister on your own? You know what, don't answer that. Just don't expect me to take it easy on you when we get back." She passed Jem a short sword and they both turned to face the huge automaton in the middle of the room.
"And what happened?" she asked. "Will got a letter from Mortmain saying you were ill."
"It wasn't the Magister, it was Nathaniel," Jem said. "He was taunting Will to get him to come here with you and Tessa to impress the Magister." She nodded.
Below, she could see Tessa below them trying to drag Charlotte from the monster's path while Henry was still out cold by a pillar. Nate Gray was screaming at the automaton, stamping his foot when it didn't listen.
"We've got to help Will," she said to Jem.
"Don't you dare jump," Jem told her. She smiled mischievously.
"Good to have you back, brother," she said then launched herself off the gangway and onto the metal monster's head. She heard Jem swear and leap after her, catching hold of the back of the automaton's neck.
"Glad you could join me," Will shouted, slashing with his sword at the throat of the metal creature but only managing to make a dent. "What the hell took you so long?"
"Oh, I'm sorry, William," Grace yelled. "Next time I have to fight through three automatons to get to my brother, I'll try to be a bit quicker for you!"
"I'm just the trying to distract a bloody metal giant over here!" He yelled back. "But don't worry, take your time. I'll just die and get out of your way!"
"You are an idiot," she told him. She carved off one of its horns, tossing it at Will who promptly chucked it at Nate, laughing as he did so.
"But I'm a deviously intelligent and handsome idiot," he grinned.
"That doesn't even make sense!" She yelled at him.
"Will you two stop arguing while we're in the middle of a battle!" Jem exclaimed at the both of them. "By the Angel, you're both as bad as each other."
"Shut up!" Grace and Will shouted at the same time. "I'm going to give you some choice words when we get back to the Institute later, James Carstairs," Will continued, stabbing at the creature's face but to no avail.
"How are we going to beat this thing?" Grace asked. "We can't just hack it to pieces, as much as I would like to." She ducked as the thing tried to brush her off its shoulder.
"What about that thing Henry gave to you?!" Will shouted, sawing off another one of the horns attached to the automaton's head and yet again threw it at Nate. Even Grace had to laugh as he jumped back in fright.
"Jem, catch!" She cried, throwing the device Henry gave to her over the creature's head. Jem snatched it out of the air and scrambled to the back of its neck, trying to yank open the maintenance hatch where he could place the device.
"Shake them off!" Nate screamed at the mechanical creature. "Shake them off, you great metal bastard!" The monster suddenly stopped moving.
"Oh sh-" Grace was cut off when the creature violently shook itself. Will slipped but managed to grab hold of something before he fell. Grace stumbled and fell but Will caught her wrist with one hand so she was dangling in mid-air. Jem was not so lucky. He plummeted to the ground, his leg going from underneath him.
"James! " Will cried. The creature stomped towards Jem as if it sensed weakness. Grace looked up at Will.
"Drop me!" She shouted at him. He nodded and let go. For a moment, she was weightless but then she reached out and snatched for a grip on the automaton's leg to break her fall. She let go again and landed like a cat in front of Jem. The creature reached out its clawed hand to grab them. It was at that moment that Grace realised that she had dropped her blades when Will caught her.
"Grace!" Tessa screamed. Grace held up a hand as if she could ward the monster off...then she melted right through it. The automaton teared up with a screech, clutching the claw that she had just burned through with her bare hands. Grace stared at her palms in disbelief.
What the hell...?
"James!" Will yelled. "Throw it!" Jem drew his arm back to launch the device but suddenly Nate was there, kicking out Jem's broken leg. The device rolled out of his hand as he tumbled to he ground for the second time. Grace turned and punched Nate right on the nose. He yelled out and grabbed her by the throat. As soon as he touched her skin, he drew back, screaming as his hands blistered and burned. Grace stood in shock. What was happening to her?
"You monster!" Nate snarled at her. He then spotted the device that had rolled to the other side of the room. Turning away from Grace, he sprinted to grab it. Tessa ran forward just at the same time her brother did and they collided, both scrambling and fighting for the device. For one confused moment, they just looked like siblings fighting over a toy.
Grace ran to Jem who was struggling with his leg. She drew her stele from her belt. "Tessa!" she shouted at her while drawing an iratze on Jem's broken leg. "Change!" Tessa's eyes widened as she understood. She closed her eyes and suddenly, Nate Gray was faced with a copy of himself. He stood there, spluttering and cursing.
"Throw it!" Will yelled and Tessa did, the device arcing in the sky before Will caught it out of the air. He disappeared behind the machine, trying to lodge the device inside it. Meanwhile, Grace had snuck over to where Henry lay, drawing a healing rune on him. He sat bolt right up and legged it to Charlotte, not saying a word to Grace. She crept back to Jem who was staring in disbelief at Tessa and Nate on the other side of the room.
"I am Nathaniel Gray!" Tessa was shouting at the metal giant. "And I order you in the name of the Magister to seize that man and hold him!" She pointed at the real Nate who was lifted off his feet by the creature. He screamed and thrashed but it was too strong.
Will dropped to the floor and started to run. "Tessa, get down!" He yelled but she was stood still, staring in shock at the monster. Her Change even slipped away.
"Tessa!" Will screamed. He started running at her, his blue eyes wild. He struck her, pinning her to the ground.
"Oh crap," Grace said. "Everybody down!" She and Jem dove behind some crates just as the automaton exploded. The sound was almost unbearable, cutting through the air as metal was ripped and shredded. Grace covered her ears as the ground beneath her shuddered. Somewhere in the cacophony, she heard Nate scream.
Then it was over.
Grace slowly and painfully rose to her feet, dust and plaster falling off her gear and crumbling at her feet as she did so. Jem stood too, limping a little with his newly healed leg but otherwise unhurt. "Are you all right?" He asked. She nodded and looked around the destroyed warehouse. Henry was cradling Charlotte in the corner but they both were now getting rid of their shock. Grace turned to the middle of the warehouse. Tessa was struggling to her feet, running towards her brother who was pinned up against the wall by a piece of shrapnel.
But Will wasn't moving.
"Will!" Grace cried, running across the room and leaping over hunks of metal to get to him. She fell to her knees next to him. He was lying on his left side after freeing Tessa but, after a moments hesitation as she was afraid she may burn him, Grace rolled Will onto his front, exposing the ugly wounds to his back. The tough gear had been ripped to pieces by flying bits of metal after the explosion, his back completely shredded. Blood was pooling around her, Will's blood.
"Oh my God. Jem!" Grace yelled. He was there in a second on Will's other side, his face pale and grave.
"Oh God, Will," he said. Will's breath was coming in shallow pants, his face as white as snow.
"Will, help me!" It was Tessa calling from the other side of the room where her brother was dying. She didn't know how badly Will was hurt yet.
Will tried to push himself up with his arms only to get shoved back down by Grace and Jem. "No, Will," Jem said. "Don't move. You'll make it so much worse that it already is."
"But Tessa," Will groaned, trying to get up again. "She needs me. Please. She's calling-"
"Stay down, Will," Grace said softly. She leaned down and whispered in Will's ear that Tessa was unhurt and she was safe. Will relaxed slightly but his face was still tight with pain.
"We've got to get him out of here," Jem said to her over Will. "He's losing too much blood and we can't heal him until the metal is removed."
"We have to get that large piece out first," Grace said, gesturing to the huge piece of metal sticking out of Will's side. "If we move him with that still in, it could puncture his lung and then he'll be dead." Jem nodded, placing his hands on Will's shoulders to keep him still and to comfort him.
"You do it," he said. "I'll hold him down." Grace took a deep breath. This reminded her of her nightmare and of the demon metal inside Philip there. She pushed the memory away and placed her hands on the shard. Jem looked at her with worry that she was sure was in her eyes too. He nodded.
"Hold still, Will," he whispered. "It will be over in a minute." Will opened one of his eyes.
"Wait, what are you-" Grace gently yanked out the metal. Will screamed and groaned, his hands closing into fists and all the muscles in his back tensing. She threw the metal away, taking Will's hand.
"It's all right," she said quietly. "It's all right." He was panting, his hair soaked with sweat and blood, his eyes were tightly closed but he gripped Grace's hand so hard that her fingers turned white. Jem met her gaze after he drew an amissio- a rune that slowed blood loss. She had never seen Jem this scared in all her life. She knew that Jem was afraid that he might lose his parabatai tonight.
"We have to get him back to the Institute," Charlotte said, coming up to them with Henry by her side. "The Silent Brothers need to see him."
"I'll go find something we can carry him on," Henry said, leaving them and heading into the warehouse.
"Will?" It was Tessa, standing in front of them. Grace could see the body of her dead brother still up against the wall.
"Your brother, Tessa?" Charlotte said gently. "Is he-"
"He's dead," she replied in a daze. She seemed as if the whole world had just crumbled around her as she stared at Will's lifeless form on the floor.
"Tessa, you're hurt," Grace said, not releasing Will's hand.
"No I'm not," she said. "Don't be ridiculous. We've got to go. We have to-"
"You have a gash, on your head," Jem said, looking up at her. Grace could see the worry in his eyes for both Tessa and Will. Tessa raised her hand and touched the cut. For moment, she looked truly shocked but then her eyes rolled into the back of her head and she fainted. Jem caught her, staggering a little but then swung her up into his arms, carrying her bridal style.
"Is she all right?" Charlotte asked just as Henry came back with a wooden board to carry Will on.
"She'll be fine," Grace said. "Come on, we have to get back to the Institute."
