Chapter 14- Monster

Disclaimer: SOME of the dialogue in this chapter, all characters (but Grace and Philip), the main story line and settings belong to the magnificent Cassie Clare. Grace, Philip and my own story plot belong to me. The Infernal Devices do not belong to me.

A/N: Picture above is what I think Grace looks like. I think the actress is Nina Dobrev from Vampire Diaries? I don't watch it so I'm not sure. If you know then please tell me! But yeah, basically, this is how I imagine Grace. Who would you choose to play Grace? I'm just curious ;)

"You need to tell me what's going on," Will said. He had cornered Grace in the corridor on the way to the meeting with Charlotte. They had sent the message Jessamine had written and got a reply pretty swiftly. It was just a matter of time now.

Grace looked up at him and her face slammed like a door. "There's nothing going on," she said.

"Come on, Gracey," Will said. "You can't lie to me. You were unconscious for weeks. I saw what was happening to you on the outside. What did Yanluo do to you?" She looked away from him and Will could see the fragility in her eyes. "Gracey, you don't have to deal with this alone. Let me help you."

"How could you help me, Will?" She asked. "What could you possibly do?" Will was about to answer but the words got stuck in his throat. She was right. He had no idea what she went through. But he had to try.

"I told you about my curse," he said. "It was a secret I had kept for years and yet, I told you because I knew you would understand. You know what it's like to be afraid of yourself and the harm you could do. But you helped me, told me to go to Magnus who is now so close to finding the demon who cursed me. I would never have gone to Magnus if you hadn't of forced me to. So now, I'm going to force you because its the best thing for you."

"Will, we only have two hours before Jem-"

"No, Grace, don't change the subject," Will said harshly. "Jem would want me to do this so tell me or I won't let you leave this Institute." She pursed her lips together, trying to avoid his gaze. When she finally spoke, her voice was cracked and hoarse.

"He -it- sent me to the Shanghai Institute," she said. "Or, as it would have been if Yanluo had never attacked us. My mother and father were alive and happy. Jem was healthy and wasn't dying. Jessamine's parents never left the Shadowhunters and she was kind to me, my best friend. And me...I was engaged to Philip Blackthorn, who was also Jem's parabatai." Will tried not to feel hurt by that. It wasn't real and it would never happen. It didn't matter.

"It all seemed so perfect," Grace went on, tears in her eyes that she was viciously blinking away. "I could have stayed there forever if I didn't realise that it wasn't perfect. It wasn't me who was cursed, it was Philip... And I couldn't live in a world where you weren't my brother's parabatai."

"Oh Grace," Will said, pulling her into his arms and hugging her tightly, her face buried into his chest. Hugging her like this reminded him of when he used to hold Cecily after she had had a nightmare, or when Ella used to hold him... Will tightened his grip on Grace, breathing in the scent of lavender from her hair. He couldn't think about Ella and Cecily now. He had to focus on Grace and Jem.

Grace took a deep breath. "I'm all right now," she said, her voice muffled. "I'm all right." She sounded as if she was trying to convince herself. Will released her.

"Come on," he said. "Let's go get our brother back."

-*-*-*-*- Grace -*-*-*-*-
After Gideon Lightwood arrived to look after the Institute while they were gone (something Grace was neither happy nor pleased with), they agreed that Cyril was to walk behind Tessa just to make sure she didn't get lost. Henry handed Grace and Charlotte a device he had been working on to shatter the automatons before they left the drawing room to prepare.

After they were sure everything was ready, Grace, Will and the rest left earlier to scout out the warehouse before Nathaniel Gray's arrived. After Will unlocked the gate and the front door, Grace and the rest of the Shadowhunters entered into some offices but only one looked like it had been used recently.

"Doubtless where Jessamine and Nate accomplished the majority of their courtship," Will observed. Grace shot him a venomous look but didn't say anything. They continued through more offices and into the warehouse floor.

"That's odd," Grace murmured, crouching to the floor and brushing her hand across its surface.

"What is it?" Will asked.

"The floor," Grace said, standing up. Will looked down.

"Yes, I am quite aware it is a floor, Gracey," he said. "I am walking on it after all." Grace shook her head.

"No, look closely. It's clear of dust but this warehouse looks as if it hasn't been used in years. There has been activity here, and possibly more than just Nate and Jessamine meeting." Will smiled a mischievous smile.

"What?" She asked.

"It's just good to have you back, that's all," he replied.

"There are more offices that way," Henry said, coming up behind them. "Will, Grace, you go and search the second floor. Charlotte and I will take a look in those offices." Will grinned at Grace. It was a rare and novel thrill when Henry gave the orders. Grace only rolled her eyes and lead the way up the creaky stairs.

As Grace came up to the gallery, she froze, her heart pounding in her chest. "Grace?" Will asked. "Grace, what is it?" He then looked to where she was staring.

On the floor ahead of them was the body. His eyes were shut but the blood trickling down his chin was plain to see. "By the Angel," Will whispered. He went towards the body, laying a hand on his wrist. "Still alive."

Grace remained paralysed. She couldn't move, couldn't breathe. She had seen this so many times before in her nightmares. Gripping the handle of a seraph blade lodge in her belt, she took a step forward and crouched next to Will, forcing herself to look at the youthful man on the floor. It's not Jem, she told herself. It's not Jem.

Suddenly the man's eyes snapped open. "You're a werewolf," Will said. "You've been buying yin fen off the ifrits down the Chapel, haven't you?" The werewolf nodded slightly, blood dribbling from the corners of his mouth.

"You're working for the Magister," Grace said coldly. "What was he having you do here?"

"Bloody Nephilm," the werewolf snarled. "I ain't telling you anything!"

"Mortmain knew what he was doing when he gave you the yin fen," Grace said quietly. "He doesn't deserve your loyalty or secrecy. Tell us where he is and what he was making you do." The werewolf broke into a violent coughing fit, splattering blood over Grace. She winced but remained where she was.

"He was making us build those metal men," he wheezed. "But as if I would know where the Magister is. I only come back here to see if there was any of the drug left."

"Have you seen anyone else here recently?" Grace asked urgently. "A boy, our age, has silver hair?" The werewolf laughed then coughed.

"So that's why your so interested in the yin fen," he chuckled. "One of yours needs it. Ha!" He suddenly lashed out and snatched Grace's wrist, yanking her towards him. He pushed his face as close to hers as possible. "How much longer does he have left then?" Will grabbed Grace by the shoulders and pulled her backwards out of the werewolf's grasp.

Will turned to Charlotte who Grace didn't even know was there. "Charlotte," he said. "Help us get him downstairs, maybe the Brothers can do something." But Charlotte turned a pale shade of green, clamping her hand over her mouth and running down the stairs.

"Charlotte!" Will hissed. "Bloody hell. All right, Grace grab his shoulders-"

"He's dead, Will," Grace whispered. "There's no point." She stood, brushing off her gear. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

"I know what you're thinking," Will said to her. "But don't worry. I will not let Jem die like that."

"We better find him soon though," Grace muttered. "Time is almost up." Right on cue, the door to the warehouse suddenly opened with a huge bang! Grace and Will dropped to the floor as Nathaniel Gray called out Jessamine's name. Grace looked at Will who nodded and they both inched to the edge of the gallery just as Tessa, disguised as Jessamine, entered from the door too.

"Nate," she sighed, faking the relief. "I was afraid you wouldn't come."

"Jessamine, my love," Nate said, opening his arms for an embrace. "Of course I came for you, my sweet." Grace gagged making Will choke back a laugh to avoid giving their position away. She kicked him to make him shut up.

"Nate," Tessa said, her voice shaking. She let her brother hug her. "I need to know where the Magister is. It's terribly important. The Shadowhunters, they are planning an attack. They think they know where the Magister is. I must know otherwise all our plans will be for nothing."

"I see," Nathaniel murmured. "But first, come and kiss me, sweet and twenty."

"Grace," Will whispered. "We have to move now."

"Wait," Grace hissed.

"You're not seriously going to make Tessa kiss her own brother, are you?" Will hissed back at her.

"Now isn't the right time," she said. "And there's no need to be jealous, Will. Just wait." He looked at her accusingly but bit his lip and waited. There was suddenly a cruel and loud laugh that came from below the gallery. Nate had suddenly gripped Tessa's jaw.

"I wondered how far you would go to protect your Shadowhunter friends, little sister," he laughed. He suddenly grabbed her arm, pulling Tessa against him. "Did you really think I wouldn't guess? That wild goose chase to Vauxhall and then that ridiculous note from Jessamine. I should have known it was you from the beginning you stupid little girl!"

"Grace," Will begged, his voice sounding strained.

"Not yet," she said.

"But he's hurting her, Grace," Will hissed. "Please, we've got to do something! What are you waiting for?"

"Give Tessa a chance," she said. "Nate is already giving away information just to boast to Tessa. She can handle him. Just wait until he tells us where Jem is." Will shifted in his position, drawing a sword.

"If he tries anything," he said darkly. "We're stopping him." Grace nodded.

"Agreed," she said, silently pulling to daggers from her belt. "But wait a little longer." They turned back to the conversation between Tessa and her brother just in time to see Tessa kick her brother in the knee and rack her nails across his cheek.

"Still think Tessa can't handle herself?" Grace muttered to Will. This time it was Will's turn to kick her.

"...you can't kill me!" Tessa was saying as Nate grabbed hold of her again. "The Magister wants me alive!"

"Alive is not unhurt," Nate snarled. He yanked Tessa back by her hair and Grace had to clamp down on Will's arm to stop him from leaping at Nate right that moment. "Wondering where your friends are?" Nate asked. "Well here's one of them, at least." Suddenly the floor beneath Grace and Will started to shudder. Will and Grace looked at each other, then slowly turned their heads to the shadows where a huge, twenty foot tall metal monster looked out of the darkness. Every step it took jolted Grace as it moved.

"Will," Grace gasped. "It's got Charlotte." They both watched in horror as the thing dropped Charlotte to the floor with a sickening thump. Grace's heart pounded as he creature rose it's spiked foot to crush her...but then Henry came shooting out of the darkness, slashing at the monster with his sword. But his blade shattered and, with one sweeping hand, the creature sent him flying across the room, slamming into a pillar. Henry crumpled.

"We got to go now," Grace said, standing up ready to spring.

"I'll give you a choice, Tessa," Nate snarled. "Promise that you will comply, and I'll let one of your friends live. You can choose which one." Then he looked above them. There was a snap as a bright white light flickered on above a gangway directly opposite Will and Grace.

For a second, everything around Grace seemed to fall still and silent. All she could see was three automatons surrounding a struggling figure. His hands were shackled above his head, the chains locked onto the wall high above him. One automaton held a knife to his throat but that didn't stop him from thrashing, trying to escape. She locked gazes with him, watching as his eyes widened in shock. He tried to shout her name but his mouth was gagged.

"Will," Grace said, not taking her eyes off the group. She saw Will stand up too.

"By the Angel..." He whispered.

"Yes," Nate Gray said, directing every word at Tessa. "Who matters more to you, little sister? Charlotte Branwell or James Carstairs? It's your choice, otherwise, they both die."
