'I knew I loved you then
But you'd never know
'Cause I played it cool when I was scared of letting go
I know I needed you
But I never showed
But I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go.'

-*-*-*-*- Grace -*-*-*-*-

Magnus yanked her into the room, ushering Will and Tessa then slamming the door behind them. "The Clave really have lost it if they sent you here," he said, jabbing a finger at Grace.

"I would ask how you know me but I've found out recently many more people know me than I think," Grace sighed, sitting down on a chair. "So go on then, tell me why I shouldn't be here. Everybody else seems to think they can."

"Do they really think I wouldn't recognise my own work?" he asked. He stalked towards her and pulled off her crystal pendant, letting it dangle from his fingers.

"Wait, you made Grace and Jem's necklaces?" Will asked. "For some reason, I'm not really that surprised."

"If de Quincey knows who you are and that you are here," Magnus growled, "Then we might as well give up now."

"Well if you really don't want me to be here, and you're willing to tell de Quincey who I am then you better go and do it, because I'm not leaving," Grace said, getting up and helping Will search the room.

"You're as stubborn now as you were then," Magnus said. "You'll be sorry if de Quincey catches us."

"Don't you think I know that?" she said, pulling out books from the bookcase. "I know the risks. I've dealt with the most of my life. Just stop trying to tell me what to do and let me do my job." Magnus held up his hands and took a step back.

"You know, I liked you better as a little girl," he said, turning away.

"Yeah well, that little girl had to grow up," Grace muttered. Tessa caught her eye just then and gave her a look of a mixture of sympathy and suspicion. Will came towards her and nudged her arm.

"Are you all right?" he asked.

"Never better," Grace replied curtly.

"You don't have to act like you don't care," Will said. "I know you, Gracey." Grace didn't say anything as she moved over to the desk. The truth was, she didn't really know what was wrong with her. Too many things had happened recently. First, she'd got kidnapped. Next, Camille tells her something about her past that she couldn't for the life of her remember. Jem was silently angry with her and now, here comes Magnus Bane telling her he was the one who made their crystals. Everything was just up in the air with her.

"Hey, look at this," Will said, breaking her out of her thoughts. He pulled out what looked like blueprints of an automaton. "Magnus, you might want to take a look at this." Magnus came over, looking extremely concerned.

"That looks like a binding spell," he said. "A very powerful and somewhat ambitious one at that. It's meant to fuse together demon energies and some other object together thus giving that object a...life, I suppose you could call it."

"But making it look realistic," Tessa said slowly, "One would have to use human flesh. Can...could magic do that?" Magnus nodded.

"Magic can do most things," he said. "But the person would have to use magic then magic again. However, the demon would be enslaved, bound to the object. It would be entirely obedient to whoever did the binding." Grace turned away and leaned on the mantelpiece.

"And if it was done to a person?" she asked.

"You already know the answer to that, my dear Grace," Magnus murmured. "But I doubt any creature on this Earth would be able to do what Yanluo did to you again. It would require much time and energy and in the end, you must have a Greater Demon that's willing to do it anyway." Magnus hesitated then continued: "But, and this is entirely hypothetical, if the demon chose the right person, and by that I mean a horrific and despicable man, then they would be the perfect soldier. Strong, agile, swift and above all, heartless. But, my dear Grace, you were never meant to be one of these people. If Yanluo wanted one of those, you would be the last person on his list."

Will coughed to break the awkward silence. "Thank you for your expertise, Magnus," he said, slipping the blueprint into his jacket. Magnus looked faintly puzzled, as did Tessa.

"Of course," he said. Will quickly explained the plan to him, telling him what he was to do when the fighting starts.

"I doubt I can whisk Grace away," he said crookedly. Will gave Grace a meaningful look.

"She will go with you because otherwise this will be the last time she's allowed out of the Institute," he said. Grace rolled her eyes and looked away.

"Waste of my talents," Magnus sniffed, meeting Grace's eyes. "Shadowhunters. Too proud and pure to share a victory with Downworlders, am I right Grace?"

***

They had sat down in the music room and were listening to de Quincey give his speech. When they brought out the shackled man, both Grace and Will went taunt in their seats.

"Will," Grace whispered.

"I know," he said. "But we need to wait for him to draw blood."

"We may not have that long," she said. She watched as de Quincey sliced a shallow cut across the man's throat. "Will, now!"

Magnus stood up, dragging Tessa by the arm and whispering furiously to Grace. "Come along, now," he said. "Grace, you must obey the law. You know what they'll do." Reluctantly, she followed Magnus and Tessa to the doors of the music room. De Quincey ripped the hood off the poor prisoner.

That was then Tessa screamed.

Grace jerked her head up just as the Phosphor set everything alight. "That's my brother!" Tessa was shrieking. "Grace, that's my brother!" Grace looked around at the chaos, her eyes wide and wild. Will was in the middle of the room being hounded by vampires. He would say she should get out before the Enclave got here and Benedict Lightwood found an excuse to lock her up. But could she leave him?

"Please, Grace!" Tessa cried as she struggled against Magnus' grip. "Please, you have to help me! What if it was Jem?!" Grace winced. That was a sore spot.

"Urrrrrgh fine," she groaned. "Sorry about this, Magnus."

"Don't you dare," he warned but Grace had already launched herself into the air and kicked him in the face, making him topple backwards and lose his grip on Tessa. Grace grabbed Tessa's hand.

"Come on," she said. "I'll get you through to him but mind the fire. Remember: you're a vampire now and if you come into contact with the flames, you'll light up like dry paper."

"But won't you get in trouble for this?" she asked.

"Most probably," Grace muttered. "But don't worry about me. Now let's go!" Grace pulled out two daggers from the folds of her dress and started clearing a path for Tessa to get through. She drove her blades into the hearts of the vampires and sliced past them, making her way to Will who was fighting in the middle of the room on the stage.

"What the hell are the both of you doing?!" he shouted at them. "I told you to leave!" He glared at Grace like it was all her fault Tessa was here.

"Will, look out!" Tessa suddenly shrieked. Will whipped around as quick as lightning as the human subjugate swung a sharpened broken chair leg at him. Will stabbed him with his knife then pulled it out, looking ashen.

"I thought-" he didn't finish his sentence as another vampire came charging at him. Grace leapt into action, throwing her dagger at the feral creature. It hit home, thudding into the vampire's chest. She yanked it out as he crumbled into dust.

"You're welcome," she said to Will. He nodded.

"I guess I could use some help," he mumbled. Grace pointed at the young man manacled to the chair.

"That's Tessa's brother," she said. "Now you can see why she couldn't just leave him? I wasn't about to let her charge into a mob of insane vampires without any protection-" Suddenly there was a great crash as all the windows smashed and Shadowhunters in gear jumped through, herding the vampires back to the centre of the room. Grace saw Jem with Henry, fighting back a particularly vicious vampire with long, golden hair as she tried to claw her way free. The Marks on Jem's arms stood out so boldly against his pale skin.

"I wasn't sure they'd come," Will sighed.

"Well what did you expect?" Grace said with a hint of laughter. "When they saw the place go up in flames I'm sure they'd probably figure out something was up." Tessa had gone running up the stage to her brother, kneeling at his side.

"Stay with her," Will grumbled. "I'm going to Charlotte." Grace stood at the base of the stage, keeping out of sight but making sure she could see what was happening at the same time.

Benedict had seemed to have taken over Charlotte's interrogation and was quickly making things a whole lot worse. He drew his knife and threw it was de Quincey. One of de Quincey's followers flung himself in front of him, taking the knife and exploding into dust. In outrage, de Quincey launched himself at Benedict but Grace was quicker. She ran and skidded across the floor, slicing across the vampire's chest before he could reach Benedict and making him fall to the side. Grace stood, breathing hard as the members of the Enclave watched her in astonishment. It didn't last long as the vampires sprang at the Shadowhunters.

The battle was chaos. Vampire after vampire Grace slew. The floor was slick with blood of both Shadowhunter and vampire alike. At one point, Grace got caught on the shoulder by something sharp but adrenaline kicked in so she didn't feel the pain.

As Grace finished another vampire off, she looked up and saw Tessa on the floor being pinned by de Quincey. Across the chaos, Will met her eyes and they both plunged towards them. Will got there first, yanking de Quincey back by the hair. Grace glided by, standing in front of Tessa like a body guard.

"You Nephilm," de Quincey snarled. "Thinking you are superior. Not so pure as you think, are you?" He gestured his head towards Grace. "Yes, I knew who you were as soon as I knew Camille's little brat was Nephilm. You are the one we have been looking for. As soon as this is over, you'll be ours." Grace spat on his face.

"I belong to no one," she growled. De Quincey sprang at Will, knocking the pistol he was holding to one side and choking him on the floor. Out of the corner of her eye, Grace saw Tessa pick up the pistol, aiming wildly at de Quincey. No!  she thought. She might hit Will.

Will met her eyes. She nodded, understanding exactly. Will bit into de Quincey's arm and he howled but did not let go. At the same time, Grace ran, summersaulting over de Quincey while grabbing him. As she landed, de Quincey was thrown to one side off Will who stood up, holding his neck. There was blood on his teeth and it dripped down his chin.

"Come and get me!" Will shouted tauntingly. Tessa chose that moment to shoot. There was a loud bang as she hit de Quincey in the shoulder. He howled with pain before turning on her. Grace sidestepped in front of Tessa, her last knife in her hand.

"Camille," he spat. "I will be back for you and next time, you won't have your pets to protect you." He turned to Grace. "And as for you... well, you will be ours soon enough." He whirled around and ran, smashing through the window and was gone into the night.

"We can't lose him!" Grace yelled just as another vampire came up behind Tessa. She screamed as it was about to rip her throat out but there was a flash of sliver and the vampire exploded, revealing Jem.

"You two always forget to look behind you," he said, sheaving his blade. "I think that was the last of them."

-*-*-*-*- Jem -*-*-*-*-

Jem looked away and at Grace as Will drew a healing rune on his shoulder. She was wiping away the blood on her hands with a damp cloth Charlotte had brought her and bandaging her cut shoulder. She had refused to let him rune her. "You should have left," he said to her sternly.

"And if I had, I'd be sitting here right now comforting you as you mourn over Will's dead body," Grace said, not looking up. "Or, probably worse, we'd all be here watching as Charlotte explains to Tessa's brother why she's dead."

"She's got a point, Jem," Will said. "I would have been dead a hundred times over if it wasn't for her tonight."

"I just worry about you, that's all," Jem muttered as he rolled up his sleeve. "But it's obvious you don't."

"Did you see the look on Benedict's face when Grace saved him though?" Will laughed. "Oh God, he looked like a angry chipmunk."

"Be quiet, Will. You know full well that this isn't funny," Jem said although he was struggling to keep a straight face himself. They all had a chuckle as Gabriel looked over at them with a furious look on his face.

"Grace," Charlotte called. Jem watched as Grace pushed herself up and walked over to her.

"This doesn't look good," he muttered.

"Is it ever?" Will asked, his blue eyes staring intently at him. He shrugged and looked away. Tessa was kneeling at her brother's side, wiping away the blood from his face. The cut on his neck was bleeding steadily. She looked so vulnerable just sitting there. Nothing else seemed important to her at that moment. Jem wanted to go to her and comfort her but he knew that wasn't his place.

"I can't believe the damn Enclave," Grace said, storming back to Jem and Will. "They're sending me back to the Institute for 'disciplinary issues'. I mean, what the hell? I saved their good for nothing, stupid, b-"

"Grace," Jem said sternly.

"Well, I did save their lives."

"You know what they are like," Jem sighed. "Will and I will come with you. We need to get Will home anyway and get some holy water down him."

"Urgh," Will said.

"Come on," Jem said. "We'd better get out before one of us causes some trouble we can't get out of."
