60| Inevitably dark hours
"Lucy we have to go, now! Acnologia is here, the others are gonna need us!" Gray shouted down at the golden blonde woman with a serious expression on her face.
She glanced up at him, then back at the confused and frightened group of people she had rounded up after the main bulk. Most people left their homes as asked without much of a fuss. But there were still some that turned their noses up to the young wizards.
However, when the first of Acnologia's roars shook the earth beneath them, they realized the true danger that lurked closer and closer with every second. It took two hours to completely evacuate the city with just the two of them.
Lucy nodded back at her friend, a fiery determination in her eyes and turned to the ten civilians standing before them. "Join the rest of the city just up that mountain. Fairy Tail will not allow Magnolia to fall to him."
An old man in the group furrowed his bushy snow white eyebrows. "And who are you? I've never seen you before in my life."
It was then that her expression softened and the edges of her lips curled into a gentle smile. "My name is Lucy Heartfilia, I'm not a danger to you."
Gray took a hold of Lucy's arm before she said anything else and pulled her away from the confrontational old man, taking her to where they were due to meet the Dragon Slayers at the front lines. His job was to "deliver their secret weapon", or so Natsu called it, after she saved the city first of course.
The two weaved in and out of alleys attempting steer clear of the Black Dragons sight. Because if his attention was drawn to them too soon, there would be no one around to back them up and it was possible that they would die. Lucy planned out everything, minute by minute. There was no room for error. They only had one try, the stakes were high.
Lucy ran over her role in her head, attempting to keep her body from quaking at the sound of the ear piercing wails of the demented dragon. The souls of her feet pounding down on the warm stone earth beneath them, the rhythm pulsing in her brain.
Suddenly, their line of sight broadened immensely as they ran into an open area. The shouts of their friends overpowered their ears and the distressful scene came into view. The dragon slayers stood frozen, Wendy trembling in her shoes.
The Black Dragon towered over the buildings the surrounded him, tainted dark eyes fixed on the wizards below. Lucy's eyes trailed from the ground up, monstrous black claws protruded from long scaly fingers. A pain in her chest twisted as fear filled her little by little.
When her eyes reached the demented orbs of the dragons a cold chill ran down the back of her neck. The 400-year-old menace appeared to be gazing deep within their souls, entrancing everyone with an overwhelming fear. The weight of Lucy's task then truly sat on her shoulders, it was her job to take the dragon down. After a certain point the dragon slayers will be of little help. The circlet was also magic source for the wearer. So they would be relying solely on her abilities. This was the ravenous creature she had to defeat, with next to no experience in actual battle.
Acnologia let out a breath and thick hot air seeped from inside his mouth, the rank stench of rotten flesh stained the clothes of the wizards. Gray bent over, his hand covering his mouth as he gagged on the foul flavor. Erza's skin complexion held hints of green.
"Guys, we can't just stand here..." Natsu stated, roaring up his molten hot flames in his hands.
"Ay, lets show this dragon what Fairy Tail is made of." The dark dragon slayer Gajeel grinned menacingly.
Lucy nodded her head in agreement. She had to face it, there was no turning back. She had come way too not to see it through. Natsu was the first to bolt off at the vile creature they were doomed to face. Gajeel and Erza followed, Wendy stood back and focused her energy aiding those in the heat of the battle. Gray, who was initially supposed to fall back at this point decided he had other plans. Readying an ice spear, he charged after them as well.
"Lucy!" The sound of her Aunt Eva's voice rang through Lucy's ears.
Distracted by the unexpected presence, she whipped around. Her eyes landing on the caramel brown locks of her aunt. Followed by Lyon's panicked expression. Lucy shook her head, No. She wasn't supposed to be there, so Lucy wouldn't have to worry about her, yet here she was.
Eva ran straight for Lucy, paying no mind to the horrifying dragon near them. At that point, for Lucy everything slowed, her eyes traveling from her aunt to Lyon who had become drawn to something in the distance. Petrified by the sight in which he could not look away from.
Then, Lucy saw it. From above her head shot a thick black beam of smoke, aimed directly at her beloved aunt. It was only a moment later Lucy processed the situation, there was no time. In the blink of an eye, the poisonous smoke encased Eva. Lucy broke into a sprint to aid her but before she knew it Eva lost balance and toppled over. Her head smacking onto the stone beneath her.
