44| Tokens and disappointment
Later that night, the gang sat in one room. Which they had all moved into in order to keep a closer eye on their little Celestial friend. After everyone had settled down it was just the same as it was every other day. Except this time, Natsu was an active member.
Out of nowhere another figure appeared in the room. Lucy's eyes widened as they landed on one of her oldest friends, Leo the Lion.
A smile formed on her face. Glad to see him once more. But his eyes were coated with a dull sadness.
He looked up at her and pursed his lips, shaking his head in disappointment. "I'm so sorry, Lucy. God, I'm such an idiot."
Lucy shot up from her place on the bed and ran over to him. Attack him with a warm and loving hug. "You have no need to be sorry."
"No but I do. I was given an order. To return you your keys as soon as you got to your Inn room. But the time difference between our worlds is very different. To me, you were just entering Crocus a few minutes ago. But to you it's been nearly six days! Please tell me nothing bad happened to you while your keys were not at your side!" Loke cried and as he looked around the room after finishing his sentence, he felt a deep pit in his stomach.
Every single face in the room fell. Something had happened to Lucy. How could he have no been aware of it? His master had been harmed without him there to protect her. Just like before. Luckily, this time she was still alive.
Lucy pulled away and she couldn't quite get herself to meet his eyes. Worrying him was not something she wanted to do. She knew he'd blame himself. But she did not believe it was his fault. To her he was innocent. No one was to blame.
"No...what happened?! Lucy what happened to you?!" He shouted, feeling angry with himself.
She let out a sigh and decided she could not hide it from him. "I was kidnapped by a dark guild named Nightmare Element. To be sold at an auction. I guess the only plus side is that they weren't aware I was a wizard."
Loke took a hard gulp, his mouth dropping open in shock. He fell to his knees and began to cry, clinging to Lucy's legs like a small child who needed their mother.
Lucy felt horrible. She never wanted to make one of her friend feel this way.
After a few minutes Loke stood back up, pulling out of his pocket, her ring of keys."Normally, I would never defy and order. But I will never again hold your keys for you. You must have them on you at all times. It is much harder for us spirits to know if you are in danger if they are in the spirit world. Please stay safe Lucy, I will come if you need me."
He placed them in her hand and with that he vanished, leaving the human world for his own. He didn't want to face her at the moment. He was far too ashamed of himself. He had allowed her to give up her keys. Which was something he believed he never should have done.
Lucy latched her keys to the hook underneath her dress. Gazing down at the carpet, her eyes filled with guilt.
"Come on, Lucy. It's our last night in a city before we reach the ancient ruins of Daedalium. Let me treat you to dinner! After all you've been through on this trip, you deserve something!" Gray grinned happily.
He had something he wanted to give to her and honestly, it would be a bit strange with everyone else around. It may help her get her mind off everything that had happened over the past few days.
Lucy looked up at Gray, after a moment she let out a sigh and they a nod. "Alright."
"YES!" Gray shouted, thrusting his fist up in the air to celebrate his victory.
He wrapped his hand around her arm and pulled her out the door. The Inn wasn't all that big so before they knew it they were back on the streets of Crocus.
"I don't even get to change first?" Lucy questioned, allowing Gray to pull her what ever way he pleased.
Gray shook his head and flashed her a smirk. "You don't need to. You look to just fine!"
Though Lucy wanted to put on something other than her normal attire she could see she had relatively no choice in the matter. Gray dragged Lucy through the large city in search of the perfect place to eat.
After nearly a half and hour of battling the crowd just to make it through the street, they found themselves standing in front of a small local sushi shop.
Lucy's eyes brightened, Gray was fully aware that Sushi was her favorite food. It was clear that he did this for her and not his own personal cravings. The wait to be seated didn't take too long. The smell of raw fish and rice hit Lucy's nose.
Gray pulled out her chair for her as she sat down at a table meant for only two. It was true that Lucy hadn't eaten for a few days. But the pain from that hunger must have come during her slumber. Because she had yet to feel any sort of pain.
They ordered a three course meal for two. It was much simpler than trying to pick just one kind off the menu. Gray reached in his pocket and felt the cool silver chain of his old necklace against his fingers.
He pulled it out and looked down at it. This was the last moment that it would be his. But he knew that he didn't need it any more. The one around his neck was the more amazing necklace he had ever owned.
He gazed back up to his best friend. "Lucy, I have something for you."
"Huh?" She questioned, raising her eyebrow and taking a sip of his water the waitress had given her.
He put his closed fist out over the table, waiting her Lucy to put his hand under his. When she did he opened it up and let it drop from his hand to hers. He watched as her eyes widened slightly in surprise.
"But, Gray-" She started but Gray interrupted her by shaking his head.
"I don't need it anymore. I want you to have it so that you always remember me, even if we aren't together." Gray was overjoyed when Lucy's lips took on a smile.
She unclasped the chain and placed it around her neck. Now they both had a piece of each other. Even if they were separated they'd always be with each other, through a small token.
