17| The present past

"How did you find me?" Lucy questioned her aunt as the five of them sat around Gray's living room.

Her only living relative, whom she hadn't seen in twelve years had shown up on her doorstep. Eva was Lucy's mother's only sister and Lucy's only aunt.

"Do you think a wizard with magic as feared as yours could show up in a big city without half of Fiore knowing it?" Eva frowned slightly, thinking Lucy  was being quite reckless living out in the open.

"Half of Fiore knows I'm here?" Lucy's eyes widened, if that was true it meant even though she thought she was, she wasn't safe.

Eva shook her head. "Three weeks ago I was reading the paper, as I do almost every day. The head lining article spoke of a maximum security prison break. It said only one prisoner escaped, a Celestial Wizard. My husband told me it was nothing to worry about and that the wizard would be caught soon and wouldn't have the chance to harm anyone. I never knew you had been taken to prison. As a matter of fact, I was lead to believe that you were killed along with both your parents that night twelve years ago."

Eva paused for a moment, her eyes searching the floor. Everyone in the room kept quiet, waiting for her to continue.

"At first I waved off the idea that it might be you, or...your mother. Until I was having tea with a group of friends. They spoke of the prison break and seeing as they are very highly regarded citizens they got a little more information then everyone else. They told me the prisoner had been there for twelve years and never once attempted to break out, and the he/she was taken at a young age. They had heard about the raid in Magnolia, I knew the Magic Council was on to something. So I told my husband I was traveling to Hargeon to met up with an old friend. I had very little hope...but I just had to know, it wasn't something I could just let go." Silence fell upon her lips as she took yet another pause.

"When I arrived here in Magnolia, I gained more information about where exactly the raid had occurred. So, I went to Fairy Tail and requested to speak to the master of the guild. I told him everything, the whole story, who I was and why I needed to know who this Wizard was. He smiled at me and told me they had a new wizard join them, and she was indeed a Celestial Wizard...named Lucy Heartfilia. He the proceeded to tell me where I would find you, seeing as you weren't there at the guild. I sat across the street from this house for three hours. I didn't know what I'd say when I finally saw you or if you'd even know who I was. But when your friend over there answered the door, and I saw your face. I felt a joy I hadn't felt since before my sister passed away. You're alive Lucy...you're alive." Eva's eyes were coated by a clear mist and her voice was choking back tears, but her face wore a smile.

Levy had tears in her eyes and she saw how emotional Eva was getting. Lucy stayed quiet, she wasn't sure if she should say anything or not.

Eva wiped her eyes and smiled brightly but then after a second it faded and her expression was more serious. Lucy noticed the change and frowned slightly.

"What is it?" She questioned.

"You are in danger, child. I can see as of now you have peace. But it will not last much longer, I'm afraid." Eva replied.

"How do you know that? Lucy is perfectly safe with us." Gray stepped in, his face plastered with a glare.

"Fiore isn't ready for the return of Celestial Wizards. The people are terrified, the Magic Council will step up. There are still people who support Celestial Wizards but most don't. I fear there will be a very devastating war in the near future." Eva answered,.

"I know my road to freedom will be hard. Never for a second did I think it would be easy. But... I've already come this far. If I'm caught now, I'll be killed, I have to follow through." Lucy spoke out.

Eva smiled lightly. "I will fight for you dear, no matter what, I promised my sister that I would do anything to keep you safe. That's what I intend to do."

Lucy nodded. "Thank you."

"You have Fairy Tail at your back, don't forget that." Erza spoke up.

*Three hours later*

It was after dinner, the five of them where still hanging out around Gray's house. Lucy, Erza, and Levy were in the living room finishing off their last slices of pizza they ordered.

Gray and Eva stood around in the kitchen, making everyone a drink to wash down their food. It had been silent between them for a few moments.

Until Eva poured Lucy's drink and finally opened her mouth.

"I know you probably don't remember, you were just a child. But, I've known you almost all your life." She started.

Gray put his drink down and looked over at her. "What?"

Eva smiled slightly. "You were the apprentice of a woman named Ur. Her and I learned magic from the same teacher."

Gray stared at her, his mouth open somewhat in shock. "You knew...Ur?"

She nodded and placed the side of her right fist to the palm of her left hand, a cool feeling hit her skin as a rose formed in the palm of her hand out of pure ice.

"Ur and I used to take you and Lyon to the lake during the summer. I would freeze the water and we would go Ice skating. Do you really not remember?" She questioned.

Gray searched his memories for the times she described, he recalled several frozen lakes with Ur and Lyon.

But the other person who was there was always such a blur. To find out that this woman was apart of his childhood seemed strange.

"You were Ur's best friend." Gray spoke.

"When I heard what happened to her, I spent months trying to find you. You and Lyon were too young to be on your own. But it was like you both just vanished. I went looking for a member of my family and found you as well." Eva's eyes saddened at the topic of Ur's death.

Gray stepped forward a few feet and wrapped his arms around her and held her tight.

Like Lucy, she was the only thing, other than Lyon of course, that he had left of his childhood.

 ------------- Author's note----------

I have been getting alot of comments about the relation between Eva, Lucy and Gray.

I just wanted to clarify that Lucy and Gray are in no way related. Eva is Lucy's aunt (by blood), and she is Ur's best friend (not by blood).

Its just a coincidence that Eva knew them both.
