16| Distant Family
It had been exactly a month since Lucy arrived in Magnolia. The magic council had only raided Fairy Tail once after the first time. They knew that as long as Fairy Tail had her, they wouldn't be able to get their filthy hands on her.
Makorov vowed to keep her safe and so far he had done an excellent job. She thought that every day she spent out of prison would be stressful and hard. But it wasnt like that at all. Lucy had been able to let her guard down even when she was walking around town.
There was still no progress with Natsu though, he wouldn't even spare her a glance. He simple acted like she wasn't there, like she never existed. Gray kept telling her to give him time. But with time it only got worse.
Lucy was still living with Gray. She had been on a few jobs with him and Erza, hoping to save up enough jewels to purchase her on place.
"Lucy! You have to try this drink I just made!" Levy came running out of the kitchen holding a glass of dark red fizzing liquid.
"Oy Levy, don't run through my house with that! You could stain my carpet!" Gray shouted after Levy.
Erza sat on the couch next to Lucy. The four of them had gotten very close with each other over the past month and spent every day at Gray's house.
"What is in it?" Lucy questioned as Levy reached her and attempted to hand her the scarlet drink.
Levy shrugged her shoulders. "It's a mix of things I found in the fridge. Don't worry it's safe, Gray watched me make it."
"Is it really safe?"Lucy smiled up at Gray.
Gray nodded slightly. "I guess. It might taste a little strange but I doubt it will kill you."
"That is really reassuring." She spoke before taking a spit from the glass Levy handed her.
A sour taste hit Lucy's tongue, followed by something that seemed tart. "Jeez, Lev. What the hell do you put in this thing?"
There was a knock of the front door, Erza shot up from her seat and ran to the door. Faster than Lucy had ever seen her move.
"My cake!" Erza screamed as she saw who was standing at the door.
"They deliver?" Gray questioned.
"Technically no. But they do for me!" Erza smile as she shut the door and walked back into the living room holding a whole cake with creamy white icing and strawberry's all around it.
"They must really value you as a customer." Lucy added in.
"Well she practically owns the place considering how much she spends there." Levy spoke with a laugh.
Gray brought out a glass of strawberry soda and handed it to Lucy. "Here you can wash Levy's drink down with this. It tastes much better."
Lucy smiled up at Gray as she took the glace from his hand. "Thanks, Frosty."
"You have a nickname for him?" Erza questioned.
"I swear there is something there between you two." Levy added in.
They shook their heads quickly. "No, no, no."
"You keep saying that but I don't believe you." Levy waved her hand.
"If there was, you'd be the first to know. Trust me, Lev." Lucy attempted to assure her.
Just then, there was yet another knock on the door, breaking their conversation. They looked around at each other. Gray never got visitors and no one from Fairy Tail would stop by without telling someone first.
"Erza, you didn't order another cake did you?" Gray questioned as he stood from his seat.
Erza shook her head, taking a bite of the cream covered cake. Gray walked over to the door and pulled it open slowly. His eyes landed on a woman who seemed to glow like an angel.
She was very petite and slightly on the taller side. She had shiny emerald colored eyes and draping sheets of caramel colored hair, her bangs covering half of her forehead. Her face was small and flawless and held an innocent look. She wore a pale green lace dress that grazed the ground just barely.
"Can I help you?" Gray questioned, the others still sitting in the living room away from sight. It was dangerous for visitors to come when Lucy was over.
"I am looking for Lucy Heartfilia. Makorov said she would be here." She spoke, her voice was soft.
"I'm sorry but.." Gray was interrupted by Lucy shooting up from her spot on the couch.
"Wait! I know that voice." Lucy muttered loud enough for only Gray to hear.
She came around the corner and stopped just as she rounded it. Her eyes landing on the woman. She said nothing, her head full of panicked thoughts. But the woman began to smile, it was sweet and it was then that Lucy and Gray knew she meant no harm.
"You look just like your mother.." Tears welled in the woman's eyes.
"Aunt Eva.." Lucy breathed lightly. Eva's smile grew wider hearing her name slip out of Lucy's lips and into the air.
She was the only living family Lucy had left. She used to dream of seeing her beloved aunt one more time. Lucy couldn't help but smile as she neared the door. The last good thing from Lucy past had been confirmed safe and very alive and she couldn't be happier.
Eva opened her arms, gesturing for Lucy to come to her, which is exactly what she did. They met half way and embraced each other. Eva's arms wrapped tightly around Lucy's neck.
It lasted a few very long moments before they pulled away from each other. Eva touched Lucy's face gently. "I thought you died along with your parents, Lucy. Your mother...I told her...."
Lucy could see that her aunt was struggling to speak the words she wanted to say. Lucy pulled her into the house and Gray shut the door firmly behind them. The two brought Eva into the living room and sat her on the couch. Lucy looked around at her friends. She knew that they needed to know who she was.
"This is my aunt Evangeline. She is the only living family that I have left."Lucy explained to them. Before looking over to her aunt. "These are my friends, Erza Scarlet, Levy McGarden, and Gray Fullbuster."
She pointed to each of them as she uttered their names. Eva smiled at each of them as Lucy went down the list. Her eyes stopping at Gray.Eva tilted her head slightly but not enough for anyone else to tell. Visions of a lost friend flashed through her mind as she studied his face.
