14| He could be right

"You stay away from Fairy Tail. Leave and never come back." Master Makorov commanded the small army the magic council sent after Lucy.

Just like that the remaining guards scurried off into the distance. Fear plastered on their faces as if it had been painted there.

At first it seemed like the council would have won the fight. But after Makorov and Gildarts joined in, Fairy Tail gained the upper hand. Causing the result to come quicker than anticipated.

Makorov slammed the heavy wooden doors shut, turning around and facing the crowd. Lucy, Happy, and Natsu were the only three not on the first floor. His expression was not a pleasant one, his eyes directed towards Lucy.

"That may be the first battle of many to come. But I am willing to fight all of them so that you can keep your life. I will fight even when others don't." Makorov stated boldly.

Lucy wasn't sure how to react. She of course, was honored. But as she looked around at the crowd of people, she could tell not everyone felt the same. There was nothing she feared more than being hated.

Twelve years in the prison helped her realize how truly twisted hatred was. People are capable of things that seem unthinkable when fulled by the burning flame of hatred.

Lucy stared around as the guild suddenly went back to normal. The tables had been flipped back and the mess had completely vanished from the hard wood floor.

Natsu turned to her, though she was not looking at him she could feel his eyes burning into her skin.

"You better lay low. If you cause too much trouble I'll get rid of you and your tainted magic myself." Natsu hissed into her ear before jumping down from the second floor balcony onto one of the tables below.

Lucy stood there for a few moments, a stunned look on her face. Her body went limp and she dropped to the ground on her knees.

She felt worthless at that very moment. As if there was nothing she could do right in the world. Maybe he was right, she had gotten both her parents killed and was the reason for Makorov's near death all those years ago.

She had been punished for twelve years, sitting in a moldy prison with three Council Guards who did vile things with her even when she was very little. Now she brings chaos to a guild that had nothing to do with her polluted life.

She forced herself to her feet, wiping her face clean of emotions. Her legs taker her down the stairs and through the calm guild, straight up to the oversized door.

Walking out was the only reasonable thing to her at that point. Lucy opened the door and shut it tightly behind her.

She wasn't sure where to go, she knew it wasn't safe out in the city for her. The only place that came to her mind was Gray's house.

So that is where she went. Lucy pulled her hood up over her eyes so that she wouldn't be recognized by a citizen.

After a while of searching the city, she finally found the small house. Gladly, she let herself in. When she opened the door the first room she stepped into the was front room.

It was a designated place for shoes, umbrellas, coats, and other various things. Straight down four stairs was the living room. She sat down on the couch, looking into the prelit fire as her thoughts overtook her.

Her mind wandered to several places. The only memories of her mother flashed before her, as if she was reliving each moment.

"Layla, please. Lucy will one day be in grave danger...if you allow me to take her now, I can prevent all of that. I will teach her other magic to suppress her abilities." A woman with flowing light caramel hair stood in front of Lucy's mother, with little Lucy at her side.

"What is magic, Aunt Eva." Lucy questioned in the innocent voice of a child.

Eva looked down at Lucy but said nothing as she continued her conversation with Lucy's mother.

"Evangeline, my dear sister. One day, when you have a child of your own, you will understand why I cannot just give her up." Layla spoke, with a short pause in between her words. "Lucy here, will some day do incredible things with the magic she's been born with."

"You know that will never happen. You run a great risk yourself by merely owning any keys. You allow your spirits to gawk around the manor as they please! Do you really want your ONLY child to be caught up in your mess when someone reveals your secret?" Eva pleaded in defense.

"What makes you think she'll be any safer with you? My magic pulses in her blood." Layla gave a questioning look.

"Lucy will never know what Celestial Magic is. She will grow up using a magic like mine." Eva smiled slightly.

"You wish to teach her Ice make magic?" Layla seemed a bit taken back.

"It is a much safer road for your daughter than the one she is on now. I know, I know dear sister, that Celestial wizards are not at fault. But the rest of the world doesn't know that. I can't keep you from being crucified. But I have a chance to protect one of the last things I hold dear to my heart. I am willing to do anything to make it happen if you just let me." Evangeline begged Layla, her heart was pure.

Layla took a few steps back from Lucy and Evangeline. She turned away, gazing out the window of her husbands study. She held her arms behind her back and hung her head in thought. After a few moments she shook her head.

"I'm sorry, sister. Lucy has to stand tall for herself. I believe in her."

The memory faded away from Lucy's mind. She found herself still staring at the crackling fire. She shook her head slightly.

"You should have let me go, Mother."
