Chapter 8: Hospitals

The image had disappeared as quickly as it came. I felt calm, no nightmares, no worries.

"Hey Blair." I heard a voice say. "Is she ok?" I heard Blair ask, I heard shuffling. "She's ok as she can be I guess." I heard Morgan sigh. I felt very disoriented and confused. The door shut. My eyes slowly opened, adjusting to the bright lights above me.

I looked around to see I was in a hospital again. "She's awake!" I heard Blair yell. "Scarlett!" Both Morgan and Nate exclaimed. I slowly tried pushing myself up, to see a needle with a tube attached to it in my arm.

My vision was still hazy, as I looked over at Blair, Morgan and Nate. "I will go and get a doctor." Nate said walking towards the door. "Don't go." I whispered, my voice was hoarse. He didn't seem to hear me as he walked out the door. "Scar,I missed you so much!" Blair cried, hugging me. Blair still had bruises and a few cuts scattered around his face.

His elbow pushed on my stomach which made me wince."I'm sorry did I hurt you?" He asked as he quickly removed his arms and sat down next to me. "Is mum ok?" I asked.

Blair nodded. "She wasn't as hurt as you, you had to have surgery on your ankle and stomach!" Blair exclaimed, eyes going wide. "I did?" I questioned. "Yep, you can't go back to football for a while Scar." He sighed, looking down at his feet. "It's ok." I smiled, taking his hand. "You saved me." Blair smiled. This boy was so sweet and he reminded me so much of my own brother how could I not save him.

"Ah Miss Ripley, your awake." A doctor said walking into the room, Nate following him. "I'm doctor Wilson." He smiled, gently shaking my hand. "You've been out for just over 2 days." He said checking the chart at the end of the bed. "Any aches or pains?" He asked. "No." I said.
"I'm sorry Miss Ripley, but it seems as though you won't be able to go back to football for quite a while, you see bullet wounds take quite a while to heal and you had surgery on your ankle, so you will have to stay here for a while." He explained. "That means you don't have to go to college for a while!" Blair laughed. I smiled at him. Great spending time in a boring hospital.

Deep down, I felt guilty, this girl had worked all her life for a chance like that and everything went wrong. I was beginning to see why she was so unhappy. College wasn't the happiest of places and Darren her father betrayed her. I was only a stand in, until her life became better. I longed to have my real family back, to share all the moments that I wished for with them, the moments I had all ready experienced with other families. But it just wasn't the same. I was trapped here in this time in this body and I absolutely hated it, I wish death would just take me. I would rather die than live these constant sad lives as a human.

"Scar are you ok?" Morgan asked, seeing me staring at the plain white walls of the room that I would be confined to for at least the next few weeks.

"I'm fine." I smiled putting on a brave face. Although Nate and Morgan were supposed to be at school, they spent every spare minute here with me. I constantly felt tired and all I wanted to do was sleep, fortunately the nightmares had stopped. I had finally been able to escape the burdens of reality. Blair was spending the afternoon in Clara's room.

"I'm so sorry that this had to happen to you." Morgan said, sending me a small smile. I nodded, not knowing what to say.

It was the afternoon of my fourth day here and I was becoming increasingly bored. Morgan and Nate were at college and Blair was talking to a therapist. Over the past few days, multiple family members appeared, giving flowers and cards. Luckily, being in the 'confused state' I was I didn't have to remember the names of the people. Darren had been arrested for attempted murder and his trial was set for this day in three weeks time. Since living this life, I had always admired Clara and Darren's relationship but it wasn't as it appeared. According to Blair, Darren would become abusive after he was drunk. Clara, Blair and Scarlett had always been to afraid to tell anyone. I had a doctor and a nurse who looked after me, Nurse Leah and Doctor Wilson. Nurse Leah was in her early 30s and was one of the nicest people I had ever met. She was bubbly and full of positivity, she spent a lot of time with me, we talked about our interests and she convinced me to watch a tv show called 'Glee'. It wasn't really my thing, but I watched it anyway. Doctor Wilson was very annoying, he treated me like a small child. Blair seemed to be coping alright with this, but I knew that under the surface, he was traumatised. I could tell this when he would do things like wince and throw his hands up infront of his face when Nate went to high five him. He also had trouble sleeping. He  seemed to lose interest in things easily like when Morgan or I would try to talk to him about something like football or his favourite films or comics. He would just space out. But just like me, he put on a brave face.

"Hey Scarlett!" I heard the cheery and easily recognisable voice of Nurse Leah.

"Hi Leah." I smiled, she was carrying a big brown box in her arms. She gently placed it on the floor and carefully removed everything from the table that was over my bed.

"Guess what's in the box?" She grinned,  sitting down on my bed.

"Not more games?" I sighed. I appreciated her keeping me company, but after playing about 20 different games yesterday it became boring.

"No, I brought some of my favourite books!" She exclaimed. I rolled my eyes, I had never really enjoyed books. In my first life, books were hard to get hold of and to be honest there weren't many of them anyway. Just bibles really.

She pulled a few books from the box. "I know they don't look like much, but they pass the time and you just might find them enjoyable." She smiled. The great Gatsby, Redeeming love and Great expectations. I threw her a questioning look.

I had come across the book Great Expectations before, but I had never read it. "I know, they don't look like much, but when my parents split up, these books got me through it." She explained. The books looked like they had just come out of an attic.

I smiled, blowing the dust of a book. "Thankyou." I said putting the book down, it was quite tattered but had that old book smell.

Nurse Leah left to go and see her other patients and I was left alone. With nothing but books for company. I decided that I would read great expectations first.

The day slowly passed by and before I knew it, Nate and Morgan were back. They had brought with them a few folders. I looked up from the book and smiled as they walked over. "Hey." Nate said putting the folders down on the table. Morgan was drinking from a bottle of Fanta and was carrying another one. "Here you are." She smiled passing me the drink. Morgan day on one side of my bed and Nate sat on the other, it was a tight squeeze but it was alright.

"How was college?" I asked, putting the book down. "Boring."Nate sighed, grabbing the tv remote.

He began flipping through the channels. "Maddison and Rosie got suspended." Morgan laughed.

"Really!" I exclaimed, trying to sit up a bit more. Nate gently helped me to sit up. "They deserve it." Nate growled. Morgan nodded, now staring at her phone.

"You alright?" I asked her. I had never found out why she had to go home when we were at the hospital a few nights back.

"Yep." She said.
"Morgan come on, what's wrong?" I sighed, she ignored me.

"I have to go Scar I'm sorry." She exclaimed walking towards the door. I sighed not knowing what to do. Nate was looking through the pile of books Nurse Leah had given me earlier.

"Nate is Morgan ok?" I asked. He put the books down and took a sip of his Pepsi.

"I honestly don't know, she seems really stressed." He replied, I nodded and lates my head on his shoulder.

"I promise that I will help you get better Scarlett."
