Chapter 6: Let the games begin
-Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain-
SATURDAY, today was our first match of the season. Nate had promised that he would be there, which made me really excited, and determined to do well. Unfortunately, I was still having that nightmare, the same one every night. Morgan was really worried about me, and insisted I talked to someone about it. But I said no.
Blair continued calling me every evening around the same time, saying that Darren has come home drunk again.
He was sad, I could tell, and I was the only person he could talk to about it. I had barley got any sleep these last few days, and I was actually scared to sleep. It was around 4pm when I was walking down to the pitch with Morgan, the game started in an hour. "Please don't listen to anything Maddison or the others say today." She said, I was exhausted and my head just wasn't in it. "Alright, I'll try." I forced a smile, as we neared the pitch. "Scar you really should see some one about these nightmares, it's happening every night." She sighed, looking around.
"It's fine I can handle it." I said, no one could help me with this. "I hope you can." She said.
We had been training for almost an hour now, and the stands were filling. I instantly became nervous. "You alright Scar?" Chloe asked. "I'm fine." I smiled, trying to be happy, but there was nothing to be happy about. As we walked out, I searched the stands for Nate and Morgan and I saw them, they were both waving and cheering for me, which only slightly calmed me down. Unfortunately, we were playing the other girls team. I didn't feel ready to face Maddison and the others again after what happened on Tuesday. The nightmares had been taking all my energy, having to relive my past, it was horrible. I wasn't sure if Morgan had told Nate about the nightmares. However, I put on a brave face, and stepped up to face Maddison. "Heads." I said, trying to sound confident. "It's tails." The referee said. Great, they would start. I nodded, as Maddison sent me a smirk.
The game was going well, we were about 20 minutes in, when the heavens opened. We all tried our best, to carry on, keeping our heads held high, it was currently a tie at 1-1. Chloe kicked me the ball, which I got with ease, I dribbled past the midfielders and then the defenders, I took my shot at goal and aimed it in the top left hand corner. I heard cheers erupt, as it went straight past the goalie and into the goal. "Wooohooooo!" Many people were cheering, and the look on Maddison's face was priceless. I threw her a smirk over my shoulder.
Half time was up, and we went back out, it was still raining and once again, we were all covered in mud.
It was all going well until I was running towards the goal, after Jasmine had passed to me, when Maddison and Cara basically attacked me. Maddison, slid across the mud, straight towards my ankles, and Cara charged at me from the side, I didn't have time to think let alone get out of the was. Maddison's studs hit my ankle, pushing me one way, while Cara threw herself into me, I cried out, as I hit the floor, I tried to get back up, but my ankle hurt so much, it was all a blur, as I heard my teammates yell, trying to see if I was ok, our coach and the referee ran over to me, but I couldn't get up. "Scarlett!" I heard Nate yell. I could barley make out the two of them as my vision blurred, tears ran down my face, this was so painful, like nothing I had experienced before. "Space, give the girl some space!" I heard our coach yell, my teammates slowly backed of. Nate and Morgan were instantly by my side, as I tried to stand again. I just couldn't! Thankfully, Nate caught me before I collapsed again. The referee ran of, I assumed it was to talk to Maddison and Cara. "Let's get you to the changing room, and get a medic." Coach shouted. Nate and Morgan balanced my weight between them, and we walked to the changing rooms, I instantly fell onto the bench. "Chloe, get a medic!" Coach shouted. Chloe nodded running off. "What hurts Scar?" Morgan asked, her eyes were full of tears. "My ankle." I whimpered. Nate rubbed my back, trying to calm me down, I leaned into him, felling that connection again. Chloe and the medic rushed in. "I'm going to have to take your shoe and sock of." She said, carefully undoing my lace, as she propped my ankle up on her leg. I could just feel the anger that Nate and Morgan felt. She gently pulled my shoe of, and began pulling my sock down. I let out a few sobs as she did. "Sorry." She said, sending me a reassuring smile. "Can one of you go and get an ice pack." She said. Chloe ran of to get one. She poked and prodded my ankle, and I let out a cry of pain. "Owwwww!" I cried. "It's ok." Nate said, voice full of concern. My ankle didn't look right, it was swelled up and you could see a bruise beginning to come through. "So you can't put any weight on it at all?" She asked. I shook my head. I think your going to have to get it checked out at the hospital. "I will drive you." Coach said, going to her phone. "I don't want to go, I'll be fine." I said. "Honey you aren't fine." She smiled. I sighed. "Will you come with me?" I asked Nate and Morgan. "Of course." They nodded.
The car ride wasn't long, but the hospital wait was. It was at least 4 hours before I was seen. "It hurts so much." I cried. "I'm so sorry Scarlett." Morgan sighed. We were sitting in the waiting area still and my ankle was throbbing. Nate had to step outside for a few minutes, as he was so angry. It was just the three of us, as coach had to get back. I was in so much pain. I quickly dialled Clara's number, telling her that I was at the hospital, she said that she would get there as soon as she could.
At last, with the help of Nate and Morgan we went into the small room. I hated hospitals, they were so clean and white and smelled of cleaning products, it made me feel dizzy, but that may have been from the pain I was in. I hated knowing that in that hospital, people were dying and people were saying goodbye to there loved ones. I was filled with sadness. I sat down on the bed and Nate and Morgan sat on chairs on the opposite side of the room. "What's your name love?" The doctor asked, he looked to be in his late twenties or early thirties. "Scarlett Ripley." I told him, he typed into the computer, looking for my name. "21st of December 1994?"He asked. I nodded presuming that her birthday was then, as she was 16 and it was 2011. "Right then miss Ripley, what seems to be the problem?" He said walking over to me. "I hurt my ankle playing football." I sighed. "I gathered that, on a scale of 1-10, how much pain would you say your in?" He asked, staring directly into my eyes. "10." I replied instantly. He nodded. He gently helped me to put my ankle on the bed, so he could get a better look. "You have a pretty big bruise over your ankle bone, which could indicate a break, or fracture." He explained, pressing on my ankle in different places. I let out a few whimpers and Nate was instantly at my side, trying to calm me down. Morgan looked uncomfortable, not knowing what she could do to help. "I'm going to give you some pain relief and then send you of to get an x-ray." He said, writing down something. He poured some water into a cup and took out a tablet which he handed to me. I drunk the water and swallowed the tablet and Nate continued rubbing my back. His touch instantly helped me to feel calm and soothed me.
After having an x-ray, we were sitting in the small white room. Morgan was furiously typing away at her phone. She had been for an hour. "Morgan what's wrong?" I asked, becoming fed up with her angry words. "Nothing." She replied, I could tell something was wrong, after living this long, you learn how to tell if people are lying. "It's my mum, she says that she needs to talk with me and my siblings right now, but I'm trying to tell her that I'm here with you and she is insisting that I go home." She explained.
"Morgan go home, if she needs to talk to you this bad, it's clearly not something she can say over the phone." I replied. "I'm not leaving you." She stated, staring at the white wall infront of her. "Morgan I will be fine, go be with your family." I smiled. She let out a harsh breath but nodded. "I'm sorry, Scar." She cried, walking out of the room. I was used to being alone, it wasn't fun, but it was alright. Besides i wasn't exactly alone, Nate was still here.
Both Nate and the doctor walked in a few minutes later. "Hello again miss Ripley." He smiled. Nate sat down next to me. It had been about an hour since I had rung Clara and she wasn't here yet. The pain wasn't as strong as it was and I was thankful for that. "Miss Ripley, it appears that you have a small break on your fibula." He said, placing his papers down on his desk. I didn't know what to say, I may of just ruined Scarlett's life. She relied on the scholarship.
"Ok." I nodded. "It doesn't require surgery, but you will need a cast." He said. "I will be back in a minute." He sighed, walking out of the room. My head was spinning with this information. Great, everything is great. I let out an angered breath. "It's ok Scarlett, I will help you." Nate smiled, gently pulling me towards him. I was so angry with myself. I pushed myself away from Nate, not allowing myself to become close with him. He looked away.
The doctor returned, this time with another woman. She smiled brightly at me and Nate, as she put the bandages and weird watery stuff down. She gestured for Nate to move and helped me to put my leg back up on the bed. I was wearing shorts anyway, so it was easy for them to do the cast. Nate stood on the other side of the room, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest. His expression was stern, as he stared at the doctor and nurse who were working on my cast.
I felt so tired, but I had to stay awake, as I was currently learning how to use the crutches that they had given me. It was hard work and my muscles ached. We were still waiting for Clara to come and pick us up to take us back, but she still wasn't here. Nate could tell that I was getting tired and I could tell that he was tired to. Neither of us had any dinner. While I was trying to get used to using crutches, I had asked Nate to text Morgan and see if she was ok. If it hadn't been for the constant nightmares I had, I would say that there was nothing I wanted more than sleep. It was odd how it was the same nightmare every night.
"So you need to come back in two weeks, just so we can see how your getting on." He explained, I nodded, trying to take in all this new information. "Where's your mum at?" Nate asked, as we walked back into the waiting room. "I'm not sure, let me ring her again." I said pulling my phone out of my pocket. I rung her phone, but it went to answer phone. Maybe she was driving? I called her again 5 minutes later and her phone still went to answer phone, I was beginning to get worried, as it had been two hours since I rang her. "She isn't answering." I sighed.
"Try your dad?" He asked. The phone rang one, then twice. "Hello?" Darren answered. "Um Dad, where is mum?" I asked, still not used to calling them mum and dad. "She is here." He laughed. "But I asked her to pick me and she said she would." I mumbled. Darren seemed different. "She is a bit busy at the moment." He slurred, I heard a smashing sound in the background and someone yell. "What's going on, where is Blair and mum?" I asked, becoming increasingly worried, as he seemed drunk. "Let me talk to them." I said. "I'm afraid they can't come to the phone right now." He said, there was a scream and the line went dead.
