Chapter 2: Football
-The trouble is you think you have time-
~Buddha
"Good morning!" Clara my mother yelled. "Ugh," I grunted pulling the covers over my head. "Today's the day!" She shouted opening the curtains.
"Come on honey." She laughed pulling the covers off me.
"That's not like you Scarlett." She stated. "Get up, and get dressed." She left the room. I tumbled out of bed and got changed into jeans and a hoodie, the style of clothes had really changed since 2007. I turned around to see something catch my eye.
It said good luck at your trial today honey love dad. It was written in bubble writing on the chalkboard. Trial? What could that be about? I turned around and went downstairs.
"Scar!" A boy shouted running towards me. "Um hi?" I answered as he hugged me. Oh, this must be Blair. "Your gonna win today I know it!" He smiled walking over to the table. "I have the perfect breakfast for our superstar!" A man smiled turning around with a pan in his hand.
That was her dad.
I smiled sitting next to Blair. "It's a two-hour journey Scarlett, so we will have to set off soon." Clara smiled walking into the kitchen with an armful of clothes. "Ok," I replied as Darren put two platefuls of breakfast down on the table. "Thanks." Blair and I replied. Blair had his headphones on and was staring intently at the screen. "Blair!" Clara shouted. "You know the rules, no phones at the table!" He put the phone down and took off his headphones.
We finished eating, and Clara rushed in handing me a sports bag. "Erm thanks?" I said. "Right you to go wait in the car, we will be out in a minute." Darren smiled handing me the keys. "You alright Scar?" Blair asked looking up at me. "Yeah just tired," I said,
pressing a button, hoping it would unlock the car, instead, it opened the boot. "Oops," I said. Blair grabbed the keys and opened the door. "Well, you can't be tired, cause you know how important this match is." He laughed getting in.
I cursed under my breath, and Blair turned to me. "Are you sure you are ok?" He asked. I nodded.
Football, I had to play a football match! I didn't even know the basics. Clara and Darren got in the car and threw me a phone. "Honey you left your phone upstairs." She laughed. Darren started the car, and I turned the phone on, only to find that there were over 200 messages. "Wow!" I mumbled. This girl was popular. I opened one of the chats, and it said...
From Chloe-bear❤️⚽️
Hey, ready for the game?!
I know I'm ready!
Can't wait to see you😁
To Chloe-bear❤️⚽️
Yeah I'm really excited
I clicked on the next chat. Which was from a girl called Jasmine.
From Jasmine💕
Hey, girly!
I miss you!
To Jasmine💕
Miss you too
I decided not to read the other messages, as they didn't seem too important. "Are you excited to see Jasmine and Chloe?" Clara asked. "Yep," I said turning the phone off. "You don't seem very excited," Blair muttered. "Blair shush." Darren sighed.
I looked in the sports bag and found the team clothes. And what were these? I thought as I picked up a pair of what looked like trainers with studs on the bottom. We spent the rest of the journey listening to the radio. We pulled into a massive college. "Wow, and to think you're going here in less than a week!" Blair smiled looking out the window. "Your one lucky girl Scarlett!" Clara laughed.
As we got out, I looked around nervously not knowing what to think. I hated football in my previous life, I had never even played it! "Scarlett!" I girl screamed running over to me.
She had dark red hair and was around the same height as me. She hugged me, and was crying? "I missed you so much, two weeks, two weeks since we have seen each other!" She cried. I nodded not really knowing what to say. "Scarlett, go get ready we will see you in a bit," Darren shouted, as he Clara and Blair were walking in the opposite direction.
"So, How have you been?!" The girl smiled, finally, she had stopped crying. "I'm good," I stated. "That's great, I'm so excited, we will be going here in less than a week!" She laughed, "Can you believe that?" She said pulling me towards the stadium.
I nodded, as we entered the changing rooms, and I was instantly crowded with hugs. I awkwardly tried to hug them back. "There's our captain!" My eyes widened at the word, captain? I barely knew how to play let alone be a captain! Thankfully, the hugging stopped.
I didn't really feel comfortable getting changed in a room with so many people, so I tried my best to cover myself up. Once I was changed, I sat down on the bench. "Omg Scar guess what!" A girl said, jumping up and down. "What?" I asked. "Jacob Hughs is watching the match today!" She laughed. "Ok?" I answered. "Tell me you remember him, he is the boy that keeps trying to ask you out!" "Oh him," I replied still not knowing who she was talking about. "He is so hot!" One of the girls exclaimed. About 10 minutes later, a woman walked in, she looked important.
"Girls, listen up." She said walking towards us all. "Scarlett it's good to see you." She smiled handing me the captains armband. "Yeah, it's good to be here." I smiled taking it. "Girls, today is the day, your places in this college will be decided!" She announced. "Let's go ladies!" She exclaimed, walking out of the dressing room. Everyone followed, and so did I.
As we walked out to the field, Clara and Darren gave me a thumbs up, and Blair was cheering from the stands. There weren't many people in the stands, as we were just going to practice for a bit. There were cones set up and footballs scattered all over the field.
The other team was also warming up, at the other end of the pitch. The girls in front of me began running around the cones, dribbling the balls. And then it was my turn. "Come on Scarlett you can do this," I whispered to myself, nervously stepping up to the ball. I kicked it gently, and ran through the cones, kicking the ball from foot to foot. I was quite surprised with myself. "Come on Scar, we have work to do!" One of the girls exclaimed, kicking a ball in my direction. It's going to hit me. She had kicked it with quite a bit of force, naturally, I put my foot out, stopping it. This was weird.
I had never played football before, yet it came so naturally to me. I kicked the ball back to her and turned around to pick the other football up that I had moments before. I placed it down a few metres in front of the goal, took a few steps back, and kicked it as hard as I could. The ball went flying into the top left corner of the goal. "What a shot!" The girl from earlier shouted running up to me.
She threw me another ball, and ran into the goal, waiting for me to kick the ball, with all my years of knowledge behind me, I put the ball on the ground and once again took a few steps back. If I ran towards the left, I could kick the ball towards the right.
I decided to try it, and ran towards the ball, and booted it towards the top right corner. The ball sailed through her hands and into the net. "Nice one!" She smiled, running back towards me.
After about 30 minutes of drills, the girl ran up to me again. "Can you tell the coach that I have gone to the toilet please Scar." She asked. "Um sure." I smiled, I still didn't know her name! I thought back to the texts, from earlier which were from Chloe and Jasmine, I had a 50% chance of getting her name right.
"Alright girls, gather around girls!" The coach exclaimed. "Where's Chloe?" She asked. So she was Chloe! "Chloe went to the toilet," I said. "Alright." The coach nodded. "So, we are going with our normal positions, Scarlett upfront, with Chloe, Jasmine, Lily and Lara in midfield, Molly and Jess in defence, and Erin in goal." She explained. "Everyone alright with that?" She asked Chloe returned, and there was a chorus of yes'. "Let's do this!" Chloe exclaimed.
"Any words from the captain?" Coach asked. "We can do this!" I smiled, not really knowing what else to say. My teammates cheered, and we went to our positions, as did the other team. Chloe pushed me forward to the referee, and a girl from the other team stepped forward to.
The man flipped a coin, and placed it on his hand, with his other hand on top. "Heads or tails?" He said turning to me. "Heads," I said trying to sound confident. He nodded and lifted his hand. "Heads it is." He stated. The girl from the other team glared daggers at me, but brought her hand to mine, shaking it. We stepped back, and the referee placed the ball at my feet.
I looked up at Clara, Darren and Blair, to see that they had made posters saying go, Scarlett! I laughed and turned back to the ball. The wisteria was blown, and the game began, I instantly started feeling more confident. I quickly passed the ball to Chloe, and she passed it back to me, I dogged the feet, that were kicking out at the ball and ran upfield, towards their goal, quickly finding one of the other girls and passing, I ran after her towards the goal, the game went pretty smoothly and ended in a 3-1 score to us, and I even scored! We received the medals, and I ran off towards Clara, Darren and Blair. "Well done sis! That goal you scored was awesome!" He exclaimed. I thanked him, and Clara and Darren also offered their praises.
I ran off towards the locker room but ran into the team captain of the other team. Great. "Hey! Watch it!" She shouted. "You may have won today Scarlett Ripley, But mark my words, I will have my revenge." She snarled, shoving passed me. "Hey, Scar, are you alright?" Chloe asked, walking with me to the locker room. "Yeah, I'm fine!" I smiled she nodded, and we got changed. I waved goodbye to the girls. "See you next week Scar." Chloe smiles, hugging me. "When we are in college!" She exclaimed. Pulling away.
I waved her goodbye and went off to find my 'family'. "Hey Scar, guess what!" Blair yelled running up to me. "What?" I asked him. "Mum and dad got us all tickets to go and see Harry Potter and the deathly hallows part 2!"
