Chapter 16: Ambition

Cara, Jasmine and I walked down to the pe block, I refused to talk to Jasmine. Cara made small talk, but I didn't listen. Was it weird that I stayed at Nate's house?

"You alright?" Cara asked, as Jasmine went to get changed. "Im fine." I answered, walking away from her, as Maddison and Rosie neared. Both girls sent me glares as I passed them.

"Hey Scarlett, do you think you'll be up to playing netball with us?" The PE teacher asked me. "Sure, I'll be fine." I replied, walking into the hall. She nodded.

"Right, Maddison and Rosie, pick you're teammates." The PE teacher announced. I watches as Maddisons eyes fell on Cara and Rosie's eyes fell on Chloe. I wasn't surprised when I was the last one left to be picked, after all, who would want the broken girl?

"Scarlett." Maddison smiled, beckoning me over to her team. At least Cara was there I thought. She probably only picked me for someone to blame when things went wrong.

The whistle blew and just as I had expected, no one passed to me. After many attempts to grab the ball, I decided to give up. I threw my arms down In frustration and ended up getting hit on the head with the ball.

"You have to try!" Maddison complained. "I am, nobody will pass to me!" I exclaimed, becoming increasingly frustrated. Maddison rolled her eyes and walked off.

"Do you want to take a break?" The woman asked me, I shook my head, I had to prove myself.

"Are you sure?" She questioned. "Yes." I answered, going back to where I had previously been standing. I was so thankful when Cara passed me the ball, I caught it, took three steps and passed it to one of the other girls.

"Nice!" Cara smiled.

After playing the match, I decided to go to the library and start studying for an upcoming maths test.

The library was serene and peaceful and was only filled with a few students. The room was decked with shelves and in the middle, there were a few tables. I sat down on the floor, near the bookshelves and took out my computer,  maths book and some pens.

The test was on algebra, I had learnt it many times before, so it wasn't difficult. I perked up slightly when I saw Nate enter the room. He didn't see me at first, but I waved him over.

"Hi." I smiled, looking up from my notes. "Hey." he answered, sitting down next to me.

Nate looked tired and slightly stressed, his cast away look made him look like he was somewhere else. "How was PE?" He asked, searching my face for any sadness.

"It was alright, the other girls didn't pass to me though, they see me as broken." I sighed, whispering the last part.

"They know nothing about you." He answered, placing his hand on top of mine.

I pulled my hand out of his grasp and looked around to make sure that no one had seen.

Nate looked slightly disheartened, but I didn't want anyone to think that we were dating.

"Sorry." He mumbled, before starting up. "I should go."

"No, Nate, w-" He was gone, before I could finish the sentence. Why was he so upset, I thought. But nether the less, I continued studying for my maths test.

Later that evening, after having a shower and having a phone call with Blair and Clara, I picked up Great Expectations. It was the latest book that I had chosen to read.

Clara had told me that they were going to be moving to Cornwall, she had loved it that much. Blair was excited to start a new school. They were still living with Clara's sister.

Blair has told me about how a boy in his class had ran into a door and ended up having a nosebleed. He had told me that one of the girls in his class had asked him to go on a date with her. He said yes, which I found very cute. It was so sweet that I was the first person who he told everything to.

Morgan was out with a boy from her drama class, rehearsing for an upcoming play. I was surprised when I had received a text from Nate, saying to meet him at the football stadium. I said yes.

It was quite dark out, but that was because it was November. I took a warm jumper and tied my hair back in a ponytail. I sent Morgan a text, saying where I was going.

When I arrived at the small stadium, I looked for Nate, but all I could see, where a football team training.

"There you are, I was beginning to think you wouldn't come." He said, still no trace of a smile.

"I want to help you, if you'll let me." He added, crossing his arms over his chest.

"I don't need help." I replied, staring at the ground.

"Oh come on." He said, a small smile playing on his lips. "Catch." I heard a voice shout from behind me. I wizzed around, but didn't catch the football in time, as it sailed over my head.

"That wasn't even a good throw." I groaned, glaring at Tom, another of Nate's friends.

"That wasn't the best, Tom." Nate laughed. "Oh sure, it's my fault." He groaned, turning back to the other boys.

It wasn't long before I heard another boy yell catch. That one went wide and I wondered if anyone on the team could throw or if I was just bad at catching.

"Focus." Nate murmured.

About 15 seconds later, another one of Nate's friend yelled for me to catch and that time I did.

"I caught it!" I exclaimed, Nate looked just as surprised as I did.

"Nice one." He grinned, before leading me over to a goal.

"Ok Scarlett, I'm going to go in goal and you have to try and score." He explained, walking to the goal.

I took a few steps back, before using all of the power I could master, to kick the football into the goal. Nate easily caught the ball. I knew that he wasn't going easy on me. I threw my hands up in frustration and angrily kicked another football into the net. That one, hit Nate in the stomach... hard.

"I'm so sorry." I sighed, running towards where he stood, doubled over in pain. "It-s ok." He chocked out, wincing as he stood up straight.

"You're a lot stronger than you look."
