Chapter 13: Fireworks



"Scarlett?" I heard Clara call, breaking me away from my silence. I tore my gaze from the windows and towards Clara and Blair. "Sweetheart, I know that you're still struggling with everything that happened with your father, but your safe, you don't have to worry anymore." She smiled, taking my hand, as Blair sat down beside us. I nodded, of course, my problems had nothing to do with Darren.

All I did was nod and send her a reassuring smile. "I wish you would be more open, Love." She smiled, rubbing my hand, while Blair stared nervously at me as if I would break. But I was already broken. "I'll try," I answered, returning my gaze to the window. "We're all worried about you." She sighed, taking a deep breath. Once again, I just nodded. "Do you think a therapist would help?" She asked. "Blair has one." She added.

"You can't afford it," I replied. I didn't need a therapist, they'd think I was crazy. "We'll get by." She smiled, as Blair huddled closer to me. I continued to stare out at the rain, falling down the window. "I'll be fine." I smiled. "Scarlett, you're not acting like yourself, you need help, you need to tell us how your feeling and what your thinking, you're not fine." She sobbed, pulling Blair and I closer to her. "I promise mum, I'm fine, I'll try and talk about everything more," I reassured Clara, gently hugging her and Blair back.

"You promise me, Scarlett if anything upsets or worries you, talk to someone, anyone." She demanded.

"I promise."

Two days passed by and everyone in the house constantly asked me if I was okay. It was annoying really, but I knew that they were just looking out for me. Evelyn and Arthur were just as kind to us and were always coming up with new things for us to do. James rented out lots of films for us to watch and Will supplied us with an everlasting amount of food. Clara and Arthur had planned for us to go and see the firework display, in the village, as it was the 5th of November. It was around half five in the evening when we left.

"Wanna come in the car with us Scarlett?" Will asked unlocking his navy blue ford. "Sure," I replied, climbing in. Blair sat down in the middle and Nate sat next to him. James sat in the front with Will. "I love fireworks, you do to don't you Scar!" Blair exclaimed as James turned the radio on. I smiled, trying to join in with the excitement. It was getting darker earlier in the evenings. We passed by the high street and Nate pointed out his old primary school, his favourite shops and of course, his favourite, the Chinese takeaway place.

"Their food is so good, the sweet and sour chicken and noodles are the best." He explained, practically drooling. "Nate! You made me feel hungry now!" James groaned, putting his phone in his pocket. The parking spaces around the common were all full, so we had to park on the high street, which was at least a 15-minute walk from where it would take place. I tugged my gloves back on, as we all hopped out the car, which Will locked and we waited for the others. Minutes later, Clara, Evelyn and Arthur arrived. "Hot chocolates?" Arthur smirked, holding Evelyn's hand. "Yes please!" Blair, Will and Nate answered. Many other groups of people passed by us on the way to costa, also wrapped up in thick coats, scarves, hats and gloves. "James, Scarlett, do you want anything?" Evelyn asked, heading into the shop. "I'm fine-" Nate cut me off by saying, "She'll have a hot chocolate too mum." I rolled my eyes as he stared at me red cheeks. "Might as well then," James added, straight back on his phone. We waited outside of the shop and I tried not to giggle, as I heard Clara tell Blair that he would go hyper if he got any more sweets. "Your cold," Nate stated, wrapping the red woolly scarf tighter around my neck. He tucked it in my coat and placed his somehow warm hands on my cheeks. "Get it brotha!" Will laughed, as he waved at us from where he was standing next to a few girls. Who giggled at his statement. I blushed hard and turned away from them. "Ignore Will, I do." Nate smiled.

Blair, Clara, Evelyn and Arthur returned, all carrying hot chocolates. "Hot, hot, hot!" Blair exclaimed as he ran towards us. "You alright there little man?" James laughed, taking his drink from Blair. He nodded, quickly handing me the drink. I took the drink and muttered a quick thank you. The drink warmed my freezing hands, even though they were covered by the gloves.

"Next stop, the fair!" Evelyn smiled, walking along the path next to Clara. "Sorry ladies, I'll catch you all later." Will smiled while waving at the three women. Arthur wrapped his arm over Will's shoulder and pulled him away from the women. From Costa, the walk to the common was short and we arrived promptly.

The common was absolutely full of people, their chatter created a quiet hum over the park. Fairy lights were hung in the trees and the loud pop music threatened to overpower the beautiful atmosphere. It all looked incredibly romantic. Towards the front of the park, there were lots of stalls and rides, such as bumper cars. Blair's eyes lit up at those.

"Do you come every year?" I asked, looking at the crowd. "Yes," James replied.

"Can we go on the bumper cars?" Blair asked, bouncing up and down. "Sure." Clara smiled, handing Blair and I £5 each. "Thank you." Clara nodded, before turning to a sweet stall.

"Come on Scar!" Blair yelled, pulling me with him through the crowd.

We reached the bumper cars and Blair ran to a red car and sat in the driver's seat. I followed him into the car and Blair paid the man. We both laughed, as we watched Nate and Will try and squish themselves into the car.

"Budge over Will!" Nate exclaimed, attempting to push Will but failing. They also paid the man, when he walked past.

"We are so going to bump you!" Blair exclaimed, raising his eyebrows and sending them his most threatening glare.

"Sure about that Blair?" Will smirked, his hands already on the wheel. I looked over to the side, where Evelyn and Arthur were laughing about how childish Will and Nate were. Clara had her phone out ready to take pictures. And James? He was still staring at his phone.

The old arcade music started up and the lights on the cars lit up. I smiled to myself, as Will and Blair looked incredibly serious.

I rolled my eyes, as both cars instantly slammed into each other.

"Come on stupid car move!" Will groaned, as he repeatedly kicked the pedal.

Many rides later, all of the Hearst men decided to have a go at a shooting game. Of course the bullets we're only plastic and the guns were attached to the desk, but Blair steered well away from them.

The aim of the game was to shoot as many of the targets as you could in one minute. James reluctantly handed over his phone to Evelyn, as she told him to 'try and socialise' I gave Nate an encouraging smile and I was surprised at how good his aim was. James... tried to keep up with the others.

"Seriously!" James exclaimed in anger, as Nate won. "In your face!" Nate laughed at his older brother.

"Can we get candy floss?" Blair asked, pointing at the stall. "Sure." I smiled.

We went to order at the stall and I felt my shoulder being tapped. "Nate?" I questioned, turning around to see him holding a teddy bear while staring at me with big puppy eyes. "I thought it would make you happy." He smiled but was caught off guard when I hugged him. "Thank you."

"20 minutes you guys!" I heard Arthur call, we found a place to stand, near a bench, in the middle of the park.

"How loud will they be?" I asked I hated loud noises. "Pretty loud," Will smirked, pushing Nate over to me.

As usual, the firework display was late and left us waiting around for ages. Blair was hyper from the cotton candy that he had eaten just minutes before. Finally, we heard a voice shout through the speakers, "Who's ready for some fireworks?" Of course, many of the younger children including Blair yelled and screamed about how excited they were.

"10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!" Everyone joined in with the countdown and I prepared myself for the 20 minutes of loud bangs. "You can all do better than that!" The voice shouted, clearly stalking. Many people groaned and everyone started the countdown again.

"3, 2, 1!" The crowd finished the countdown, as huge bursts of colours erupted in the sky. The first ones were always the loudest. I reminded myself, as I pulled my bobble hat over my ears.

Many people gasped and oohed at the flashes that lit up the sky. Blair stood in front of Clara, she had her hands on his shoulders, as they watched.

Evelyn and Arthur stood side by side and joined in with the cheering crowd. James was busy filming the fireworks to even look up from his phone. Will stared up at the night sky in awe, as the pops and bangs shook the ground.

Nate's smile was almost as bright as the fireworks, as he looked up at them. I covered my ears with my hands, as the noises got unfortunately louder. Nate must have noticed, as he pulled me into his side and placed his hands over my ears too. Those had to have been the loudest fireworks I had ever heard.
