THE SELWYN family had a curse placed upon them.

A long long time ago, Florence Selwyn great great great great great great great grandfather had had a run in with a particularly powerful Wizard and managed to piss that Wizard off (Florence blamed the Selwyn family charm on that). As a punishment, when Florence's ancestor returned home from his trip, his son and daughter were gone, two black kittens in their place.

Thankfully his children weren't fated to remain felines for the rest of their lives, and turned back into humans as soon as the sun rose in the sky. But every night, as the sun sunk, and it's rays ceased shining on the people below it, everyone born with the Selwyn name would turn into a Black Cat.

While this once must have been a terrible hindrance for the Selwyns - after all, back in the day, Black Cats were seen as a omen of bad luck, and shunned in most of England - it wasn't too much of a problem for Florence in modern times.

In fact, she found, her 'curse' came with more perks than drawbacks. Sure she couldn't change on will, and had to get all of her homework done before sundown, and her occasional craving for mice was a little disgusting. But being able to roam around the castle as a (cute) inconspicuous cat - without having to go through the tediousness of becoming an animagus - meant she was always first to be in on the juicy gossip. Which in Florence's book made up for all the drawbacks.

Of course, there sometimes came a time when she heard something that perhaps she shouldn't have. Like when Hermione Granger confessed to her cat form that notorious mass murdered Sirius Black was working with the Boy-Who-Lived and Dumbledore.

After all, you know what they say about curiosity ...
