Restless
Jason's POV
Kat jolts awake beside me with a gasp. Her forehead is streaked with sweat, and her honey-colored eyes are wide with horror.
"Hey," I mumble sleepily. "Nightmare?"
"I'm such an idiot," Kat splutters.
"Huh?"
"We have to leave! All of us! Now."
"Just calm down for a second. What are you talking about?"
Kat suddenly bursts into tears. She begins to pace around the room, trembling like a leaf. "They're coming. I've known that they would eventually, but I saw it as a good thing. They would free me and my fr-I mean, those soldiers."
"I dunno, Kat. If they do come, I'll bet they will underestimate these people like you did. We're safe."
Her eyes flare with anger. "You think it's safe here? You want to live here? You think this is better than camp? Better than the woods and the lake and everything back home?"
I grin. "The showers are pretty great."
"Forget it," Kat spits, storming out of the room. I chase after her, spluttering apologies and excuses rapidly. Her hair is tousled by sleep and despite her long rest under drugs and last night, she still looks more sleep deprived than ever. There's a glint in her eye too-- something I've never seen before. It's a mix of fear and distrust.
Naomi crosses her arms and stands in front of Kat. "Look who's out and about. Come to shoot someone else in the face?"
Kat's anger seems to suppress. She offers a small smile. "I remember everything now. They brought back my memories, and the old me."
"You really think we'll just let you off the hook? Look, princess, there's some people in this world who won't automatically agree with you just because you smiled sweetly and fluttered your eye lashes at them. Some people--"
Here she goes again, I think with an exasperated sigh.
"That's enough," I growl, pushing myself in front of Kat. I glance back at her. She stares back at Naomi, hurt and confusion registering on her face.
"Have fun with your plaything, Jason," Naomi says before stalking off. The corners of my vision go scarlet for a second, fury sweeping through me. Kat slides her hand into mine. I guess she's not mad anymore.
"What's a plaything?" Kat asks.
"Nothing," I mumble, squeezing her hand.
Over the next few days, Kat is more frantic than ever. From pacing nonstop, muttering to herself under her breath, and refusing to sleep, she becomes an overall hot mess.
"That's it!" I yell.
Her eyes snap towards me, which are glazed over with exhaustion. "What?"
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
"We have to get out of here. It's not safe. If you won't help me, I'm going to have to leave you behind."
My jaw drops in shock. "Leave me? After all we've been through? Kat, I lost an eye trying to get you back," I protest. My eyes narrow angrily. "I- I won't let you!"
This makes her laugh. The fact that I could stop someone like her is kind of ridiculous. I don't really like the idea that my girlfriend could snap me like a twig with ease. Especially when I tower over her. It doesn't make any sense. What scares me the most is how angry I am at Kat for not immediately agreeing that I always know what's best. She's developed a mind of her own, and I don't know if I like it.
Does that sound as bad as I think it does?
