Kat's POV
4 Months Later...
"Agh! Blue! Get off!" I moan, shoving the rapidly growing pup off me. He must weigh about 60 pounds now. He's not even a year old yet.
"Ar rooff!" He replies, his tongue lolling out of his mouth.
I bury my face in my pillow. What time is it? Maybe just an hour or two more of shut eye and...
"KAT!" Jason slams my door open.
I'll kill you.
"What?" I snap, attempting to sink deeper into the soft blankets.
He smirks, lifting the pillow off my head. "Wakey wakey."
"I was up all night doing chores. Go away."
"But it's our day off. Believe me, I work my butt off too."
"Doesn't that prove my point even more?"
Five minutes later, Jason somehow manages to drag me out of my little cabin. Most people around here share cabins, but I guess I got my own because I'm not exactly accepted here. Doesn't matter. I couldn't care less.
I rub my eyes. "Don't you have any other friends?"
He laughs a little. "Not really."
We get some breakfast together and sit in silence as we eat. I know Jason has friends, or used to at least. But ever since I came around, it looks like everyone is keeping a distance.
Well, most of everyone.
"Hey Jason," Naomi giggles from behind us.
I smile and turn around in my seat. "Good morning!"
She doesn't acknowledge me, which takes me aback a little. She'd be cleaning bathrooms for a week in The Walls for that.
Jason gives a half hearted wave, an even ruder greeting than Naomi just did. I can tell it hurts her feelings. She walks away, her shoulders slumped slightly.
I glare at Jason. "Why'd you do that?"
"Why do you care? She hates your guts," he retorts.
Hate. A word that I've only just learned like a month ago. "She does? Why?"
"She's jealous."
My eyes go wide. I don't know what that means either. Why are there so many words out there that I'm unfamiliar with?
He senses my confusion and rolls his eyes, along with an exasperated sigh. "It means to want to be someone because of their advantages or whatever. Naomi has had a crush on me for years."
I grin. "That's nice. You're able to choose who you're with?"
Jason nods. His eye contact shies away, something I've never understood from him.
"Would you choose to be with her?" I question once more.
He slams his fist on the table. The sudden force startles me. His gray eyes double in intensity. "No! I thought it was obvious who I had 'chosen!'"
My face reddens. What did he mean by that? Was that directed towards me? The words process, making my face turn into a deeper shade of tomato.
Suddenly the few other people at breakfast were staring at us, including Naomi. Her face looks shocked and furious. Glaring holes straight through me.
"Oh," I murmur. But he's already gone.
