The Good Titan
Image above is how I image Sarah-Anne to look like. Elle Fanning with red hair.
We pushed through the bushes and the thorns until our skin was bloody and our feet blistered. We walked over dirt and grass and mould until our feet were blistered and sore. We watched as Apollo set the sun twice and rode it over the horizon once. What felt like millennia, was actually only days. Now we were all tired and hungry. My throat was parched. Kai had finished our water supply yesterday and Apollo had not been kind. Not caring about who I was with, I had stripped my tattered camp half-blood shirt a few hours ago and had it tied around my face like a scarf, keeping the boiling sun from burning my face. Sarah-Anne held tightly onto Kai's hand, breathing heavily. I glanced back at her in worry.
"Sarah-Anne, are you okay?" I asked, pursing my lips. I winced as the tight, dry skin cracked and splintered.
Sarah-Anne wheezed again and Kai stopped walking. "Annabeth, we must rest," Kai said, and sat Sarah down on a small patch of green grass. "She is not well."
I gazed at Sarah-Anne in confusion. He skin was pale and her chest heaved up and down, up and down with heavy, hoarse breaths. Her auburn hair hung in front of her damp face like a curtain, hiding her downcast eyes. "What's wrong with her?" I asked, glancing at Tom and Jared. Tom stepped forward and placed the back of his palm on her forehead. Closing his eyes, Tom's hand glowed slightly golden. The light pulsed three times before Tom drew his hand away, face grim.
"When she was younger," Tom began saying, "Sarah-Anne had incredibly bad asthma. One of my older brothers managed to heal her but the treatment only lasts a few years at best." Tom raced round, pushing Kai out of the way. He picked Sarah-Anne up bridal-style and took her to a patch of shadow, underneath a large tree and lay her down softly. "I ran out of the correct ingredients a year ago and we haven't been able to make the treatment again."
Sarah-Anne coughed and spluttered. Tom's face drained of colour. Jarad cradled her head in his lap and looked at Tom in horror. "Can't you do something?"
Tom looked around frantically. "I don't know what to do! It's never been this bad before!" HIs voice cracked and I could hear the desperation in his words. I pushed my blonde hair off my face and fell onto my knees.
"Tom," I said harshly, "pull yourself together. You're a son of Apollo. Healing should be natural to you. Just calm down and think!"
Tom's eyes watered and I groaned in frustration. Jarad softly stroked Sarah's face, mumbling something under his breath. He looked up and saw me watching. "I'm praying," he explained, "maybe my dad will help us."
I almost laughed. Ares, help? No way. "Do not pray right now!" I snapped and almost regretted my words and harsh tone when all three boys flinched away. "You guys have been alone too long to realise but the Gods only care about us when there's something in it for them! You can only trust yourselves. Now, Tom, get up and fix Sarah-Anne, because she looks like Hades is about to grab her with his bony, cold hands."
Tom nodded meekly, wiping his cheeks, staining his face with dirk from his hands. He cupped Sarah-Anne's face with his hands and closed his eyes again. Kai watched silently still, his face scared and vulnerable. "Kai, are you okay?" I asked. Moving over to him so only we could hear our conversation.
He looked at me and for the first time since meeting him, I saw fear in his eyes. "I don't think I'll survive if she dies," he whispered softly. His eyes melted when he saw Tom performing CPR on the daughter of Hermes. "If she dies, my whole world goes with her."
I was about to say something when something huge and lumbering suddenly blocked the sun, creating a shroud of darkness upon the little clearing. "Oh, Gods," Jarad said and pulled out his sword, his eyes suddenly fearful. I froze and unsheathed my dagger, sensing danger behind me. I turned around slowly, seeing Jarad mouth Titan as I turned. How did we not hear him come up? Had we all been that engaged with Sarah-Anne to fail to notice a Titan?
My eyes travelled up the monstrous thing, it was dressed in silver armour and held a long spear. I gave out a battle cry and charged.
Then stopped.
"Owie," the Titan said and then I noticed.
He didn't have a spear at all. He held a wooden broom with gold-covered bristles. His breastplate wasn't visible because it was covered up by a tattered blue janitors T-shirt. Tears welled up in my eyes and I wished it were night so the stars were out and twinkling. I wished Percy were here with me to see him again. "Stand down!" I ordered. Jarad's eyes flickered to me in confusion.
"What?" He said and looked back at Tom, who was still trying to help Sarah-Anne. Kai was with him, gripping his shoulder and looking at the Titan in horror.
"It's only Bob." I said. And I smiled.
