Goodbye, My Love and Welcome

The ride back to Camp Half Blood was instant, but it felt like hours. I stared at the leather seat in front of me, in shock, reliving my last conversation with Cupid.

Percy had to survive. The prophecy had been in the back of my mind for this whole quest, Percy's life hung too close to my heart. But now with Cupid's announcement, the line 'and the world will fall if he doesn't survive' shrouded my mind. If Cupid says he will die, then what's the point? But the prophecy also stated he would die. 'In the end he will die'.

So what was is? Survival or death? Because my hands were clammy and my heart was breaking and I was breathing to hard to think.

For once in my life, I was speechless, without a plan and without a clue as to what could happen when we got back to Camp.

At the wheel, Cupid manoeuvred the limo onto the beach, narrowly avoiding crashing through the Poseidon cabin at the speed we were travelling at. Out of the window, I saw campers running out of the Big House, watching the limo apprehensively, hands of sword hilts or other weapons they carried.

Jarad, Sarah-Anne, Kai, and then Bob- still carrying Tom got out of the car. Cupid watched me, at least I thought he was watching me. His shadowy form was hard to read.

"What is on your mind?" Cupid asked, gathering his weapons from the dashboard.

"The prophecy Kai spoke," I said. "Percy has to survive, but he's also going to die. How will that work?"

Cupid's shadowy head titlted and he glanced over at my friends who were glancing around Camp in wonder. It would have changed drastically since they last were there. "Maybe, your Percy just needs a healer."

I glanced over until my eyes landed on Tom. "Him?" I exclaimed. "He couldn't even cure Sarah-Anne's asthma! How is he supposed to bring Percy back from the dead?"

Cupid opened his door. "Have faith, Annabeth Chase. You found this group for a reason."

With that, a force I couldn't see pushed me out of the car and I rolled onto the dewy grass and onto my feet. I swallowed, suddenly nervous. I really hoped Tom's healing skills had improved since trying to cure the asthma. Plus, he still looked extremely pale and still leant on Bob for support. I guess that's what dying does to a person. When I glanced back at Cupid, his face was focused intently in the direction of Tom. In his shadowy form, I guessed he was still confused about how Tom could see his true form without shrivelling up into a pumpkin.

"Annabeth!" Someone yelled. From a distance, I saw Will running towards us.

"Will!" I yelled and sprinted, meeting him halfway. "How is he?" I gasped.

Will grimaced and said, "not good. Follow me."

We all ran after Will, ignoring campers and satyrs alike as they bombarded us with questions. At that moment, my only worry was Percy Jackson.

As we got closer to the infirmary, my worrying increased tenfold. Pained groans and yelps came from the far corner where a large space was cornered off by white curtains. I pushed the fabric away and almost collapsed.

Percy's veins seemed about to pop out of his tense body, his eyes were squeezed shut. His skin was pale and clammy with sweat. He wasn't wearing anything but bandages that were securely wrapped around his body but even those appeared to be soaked through from sweat. He twisted painfully in a unconscious contraction and let out another groan.

"Gods," I said and looked away. Behind me, everyone else was breathing heavily in disgust and worry.

Will looked sadly at me. "We still don't know how to cure him. I hope you've come back with something." Will eyed the shadowy figure of Cupid suspiciously and backed away.

"I do," I said to Will before he let the curtains fall behind him. I hope.

Cupid looked at me before lifting up his bow and notching an arrow.

Please, Poseidon, I thought, "please Mom, let this work. Let my plan save him.

Cupid let loose.

Goodbye my love, I thought as I saw the glowing arrow imbed itself into Percy's chest with a thud.

Everything went eerily silent. "Did it work?" Sarah-Anne asked softly.

Still watching Percy intently, I gently pulled Tom forward.

"What are you doing?" He said.

"You need to heal him," I said hurriedly. "He cannot die and you're the only one who can stop it from happening."

Tom gasped and pulled his arm from my grasp. "What?"

I suspected he would argue more but in that moment, Percy's eyes flew open and he let out a bloodcurdling cry. His eyes fluttered violently around the room and when they landed on me, I let out a sob. There was no recognition in his gaze. No love.

That was too much for the both of us. Percy yelled out again and tears streamed down both of our faces.

I cried for love and he died for love lost.

When he went limp and I immediately yelled and pushed Tom forward with a shaking arm. "Now! He just died as the prophecy stated, now bring him back!"

Knowing he couldn't argue with me in my state, Tom lurched forward and got to work, holding his hands over Percy's torso, palms flat, muttering strange words.

I clasped my hands together tightly and felt Jarad and Kai move to pull me into their arms. We all watched as Tom worked his healing on Percy.

Cupid watched with curious eyes, the strange feeling again, appeared in his stomach as he watched the son of Apollo work.

After what felt like hours, something began to happen.

I gasped and pointed at Percy's torso. The arrow that Cupid shot into him was reappearing- fast. It began to glow and glow, until I found it hard to keep my eyes on Percy. But I did. The arrow began to make the journey out of Percy's body. It slid out messily as though pulled by an invisible force.

Tom was glowing now too. His hands moved fast, faster than I could see and he was muttering strange phrases under his breath.

Instantly, the light popped out. Tom fell back and somehow, Cupid caught him. I rushed to Percy's side and took his hands.

"Please, please, please," I whispered.

"Impossible," Cupid said.

Percy was waking.

"Annabeth?" he said groggily. He winced and tried to sit up but I didn't let him.

"You idiot!" I gasped and wrapped my arms around him. Finally, I could smell his salty hair again. Quickly, as though he'd never been sick, Percy pulled me close and crashed our lips together.

"I love you so much, Wisegirl," he cried. He shook with sobs and his I could taste the tears on our kiss but I didn't care.

"Welcome back, Seaweed Brain," I managed. "I love you too."
