First Epeisodia
Aeschylus the satyr enters
Chorus
We see before us
Dionysus's grove,
Where the sacred wine flows
And the maidens dance.
The sound of revels
Fills the air.
All rejoice - except for one!
Aeschylus the satyr
Watches from afar;
His lust enflamed
By what he sees.
Aeschylus
The scent of wine taunts me.
The sound of the lyre haunts me.
The nymphs they dance before me.
There is one whom I desire:
Nyssa the Bacchante!
I watch her dance,
Her body moving,
As she cavorts.
The sight of her
Blinds me to all else.
Pour the wine for me, Nyssa.
Fill my overflowing cup.
Do not taunt me Nyssa.
Give me what I desire.
Chorus
But Nyssa does not want him.
She has spurned his love before.
And so Aeschylus, in his despair,
Calls upon the gods.
Aeschylus
Oh gods, what would I give
To feel the touch of Nyssa.
What price would I not pay,
To feel her lips on mine.
Oh gods I call upon you!
Give me what I desire!
Chorus
The gods hear Aeschylus!
They send one to his side.
Son of Aphrodite!
Cupid with his bow.
Enter Cupid
Cupid
Aeschylus the satyr!
The gods have heard your cry!
I, Cupid stand before you,
To give you your desire.
Aeschylus
Nyssa the Bacchante!
She dances in the grove.
I desire her, Cupid.
I beg you -
Shoot her with your bow.
Chorus
So Cupid takes his bow
And nocks a golden shaft.
It flies straight and true.
Nyssa the Bacchante
Is wounded in her heart.
Aeschylus
Lord Cupid - how do I thank you,
for what you have done for me?
Cupid
I need no thanks Aeschylus.
Go - take what you desire.
Cupid and Aeschylus exit
