Chapter 8: Pixie Problems
A V I V A
"You are an asshole. You know that, Allen?" I smack his head as I enter his house.
Today I was dealing with the drama going on between two of my best friends. Afterall, I am a Cupid. I have to solve issues like these quite a lot, and they usually end well. But to say I'm disappointed in Allen is an understatement.
He winces and flops down onto his couch. "I know, Vee. I-I don't know what got into me! I wasn't even thinking, the words were just rolling off my tongue and I had no control."
I sit beside him. He had no control over his words?
"Leah's honestly one of the sweetest girls I've ever met. I still can't believe I said that stuff." Allen cries, tugging at his hair.
"Wait, hold on. You were with Dana, right?" I prompt him, pulling my knees to my chest and rest my chin.
"Yeah." He says.
I pause. Since Dana is a Pixie, and since they also happen to have the power of mind control - like Sirens - and dust that can grant them whatever wish they want, except for anything violent, then that means. . .
"Did you know about her being a Pixie?" I ask him.
Allen's eyes widen and he shakes his head. "No. I didn't."
There's your answer.
"She was mind controlling you," I explain, pulling my phone out to call Leah.
Allen groans and looks up at the ceiling. "Seriously? But I thought Pixies were kind?"
The call goes to voicemail, so I settle on texting her instead.
Me: Get your butt over to Allen's. I'll explain later
She doesn't reply, so I turn back to Allen. "Dana should be her own species of Supernatural."
He chuckles and nods in agreement. After a moment, he calms down and his eyes soften. "I really hurt her, didn't I?"
And just like that, I'm looking into another vision of Allen's future with his Soulmate. The girl looks nothing like Leah, with light brown hair and blue eyes. She was shorter than her, too. Much shorter. The couple was throwing snowballs at each other, bundled up for a cold day, laughing with pure joy.
I break away from the trance. Looking down at my hands, I nod slightly.
"But how do we really know it was Dana? Leah's a Siren, it could have been-"
I cut him off. "Seriously, Allen? You think Leah did that? Have you met the girl?"
The way she looked when she told me, like she was about to fall apart right then and there . . . Leah wouldn't hurt herself or Allen like that. She doesn't lie, either. She isn't like her sister.
My phone vibrates and I open up the text from her.
Leah: I'm not exactly in the mood to see that kinkajou's face
Me: Hey! Kinkajous are adorable, stop insulting them :(
Leah: That's the point, they're cute, and yeah...
I hold back a laugh and glance at Allen, only to find him daydreaming.
"Where's Briella?" I ask, looking around for his mom.
He shrugs. "Mom's probably still at the workshop thing."
Ten minutes later, there's a knock on the front door. I smile wickedly and Allen glares at me. We both already know it's Leah because she's the only person we know who knocks like that.
"Why is she here?" He whispers, refusing to stand up.
"I don't know, Al. Go answer it before she's even madder." I tell him, grabbing his hand and pulling him up.
He groans and drags himself to the door, and all I can hear are mumbled words.
When they both step into the living room, they stand next to each other awkwardly and look at me with ice-cold glares.
"So, what am I here for?" Leah moves closer to me and farther away from Allen. I hide a smirk when I catch her cheeks go the palest shade of pink.
"I think Dana was mind controlling Allen," I blurt, exhaling.
Leah stays silent for a moment, rocking on the balls of her feet. Her lips part and her nose flares. "What?"
And so, I start telling her about our theory while Allen's face is red. Leah looks downright furious, something that pretty much never happens. Of course, when it comes to her sister, it isn't uncommon, either. After explaining, I leave the two alone to talk it out and stroll into the kitchen, my eyes scanning for any delicious treats. Just as I spot a packet of gummy worms on the counter, my phone starts ringing.
Groaning, I answer the call. "Hello?"
"Hi, Cupid."
I scrunch my nose up. "Kitty? Uh, how did you get my number?"
I can practically see him grinning like an evil genius when he says, "I have my ways. What are you up to?"
I shrug, peeking into the living room and see Allen and Leah still in a heated conversation. "Just helping out my friends with something. Why?"
"Carl wanted to hang out with Faith, but he's too shy to ask her so he told me to ask you instead. So, are you two up for a movie?"
I laugh. Faith would be thrilled, seeing as she really wants a break from the whole gathering thing.
"I'll have to check if I've got any clients coming in tonight. Otherwise I'll just send Faith with you and Carl, deal?"
Alec groans from the other end of the line. "You better come. I'm not going to be the third wheel of their date!"
"Wait, what? It's a date?"
"Chill, Cupid. Of course it's not. It was a joke. You really think I'd let my brother date at the age of twelve?"
I roll my eyes and open the pack of gummy worms, stuffing them into my mouth. "Whatever. I'll text you and tell you. I've got some other shit to deal with at the moment, so I'll talk to you later, okay?"
"Yeah, sure. See you, Cupid."
And with that, the call ends and I make my way back to my friends. I give them both questioning looks. Leah's brows are drawn together as she glares at the floor, lost in thought.
"Uh, so what are we doing about Dana?" Allen breaks the silence.
I press my lips together. What do we do about her? Maybe I could get Mom to whip up one of her Truth potions and get Dana to confess. But then what?
"I'm going to ask Emma if I could stay at hers for a while. I know if I see Dana's face now, I'll punch it. Mom and Dad wouldn't do anything about her behavior, either. They're just as bad as her." Leah shudders, pouting.
"Everyone in your family are a bunch of meanies, except you." Allen comments, pulling her into a hug.
I almost sputter a laugh when they hug, because it looks very awkward. Especially since Leah's a tiny bit taller than Allen. In fact, she was almost Weylen's height.
"Tell me about it," Leah replies. She pulls away from the hug and looks at me. "Thanks for telling me, Viv."
I nod. "It's good. Uh, well, now that that's settled, I have to get going. In the meantime, you two better start plotting revenge, 'kay? Good. Now, bye guys!"
I don't wait for them to answer and rush out the door. I don't know if the Nymphs are able to take away a Supernatural's power, but if they can, they really should get rid of Dana's.
After I get home, I inform Faith about the movie tonight. She beams and agrees, then tells me I've got about five clients to see. Delightful.
Changing out of my sweaty clothes, I walk into my office and wait patiently for the next customer to come in. However, when someone sits down, I scowl.
"Paige?" I say, raising a brow.
Paige Wellington is one of Ezlyn's 'friends', that just loves making my life at school much worse than it already is. She is also the type of girl who can run like a cheetah while wearing heels and not trip even once.
It's probably her only talent.
"Hello, Aviva." She says lamely, putting her elbow on my desk and resting her chin on her palm. She smirks.
"What do you want? Listen, if you're here to give me bull, it's best you leave now. I don't-"
"I want to know who my Soulmate is," She says, cutting me off.
"That's nice." I reply, logging onto my computer.
"I'm serious, Aviva. I know I've been a brat to you for the past couple of years, but I'm desperate."
I snort.
Yeah, she's desperate all right. For Weylen.
Poor Wey. I don't think there's a time when I don't see Paige eye raping him.
"And who are you hoping it to be?" I ask, returning her smirk. "My cousin?"
Paige glares at me, sighing. "Just tell me, please. I'll stop being a brat to you and your pathetic friends."
Did she really just call my friends pathetic? Look who's talking.
"You know what, Paige? I don't have time for this. I've got other clients to see. Goodbye, now." I growl, pointing towards the door.
"Ugh, fine. I'm so sorry." She says, not sounding sorry at all. "Please, Aviva."
I shake my head. "Come back another day when you really aren't acting like a brat."
Her fists clench and she looks like she's about to scream, but thankfully she decides against it and storms out of the room.
