Chapter 18: Can't Go Back
A L E C
"Again!" Maksim, my instructor, barks as he circles the arena. I wipe the sweat from my temples and press my lips together, shaking my head.
"I'm afraid that's all the time I have for training today, Maksim." I inform him, collecting my throwing knives.
He dark red eyes shape into slits as he lifts his chin. "You seem to forget that I dismiss you, Your Grace. You do not dismiss yourself."
I chuckle at this. "You sound like a school teacher."
Maksim's glare only hardens, but it doesn't affect me in the slightest. Maksim has been my trainer ever since I was merely a small child, though he is more like a father figure now. To this day, he still believes my skills with magic need to improve. He wants me to be better than my brother. Better than himself. Though I am nowhere near as good as he is. Or Ryker, for that matter.
My rival at the moment, though, is my own betrothed. She trains everyday, every night-nothing different from what I do. But while Paige is more wild with her powers, I have more control. Calculations are made before I blast someone or something with a shadow ball. Sometimes I have the advantage when we are battling and sometimes I don't. Maksim here is training me to make sure that I always have the advantage.
"Where are you off to, Alec?" Maksim dusts the dirt off his shirt. "Not going back to see that girl, I hope?"
This throws me off guard. I haven't seen Cupid in more than a month. Or any of my friends. I miss them all, I really do. But I can't go back. Not now, at least.
"No, Maksim. You know that's not possible." I sigh, walking side by side with him back into the palace.
He hums in response, wrinkles deepening as he frowns. "Then is there any particular reason as to why you must shorten today's session?"
I snort. "Is my father a good enough reason?"
"It's about time I have a chat with that fellow. Too many lessons have been cut short due to his callings. Does he not understand the importance of your training?"
"Apparently not," I say, nodding at a guard who stands by a door when he bows. I walk into my chamber, turning back around to my instructor with a slight smile. "Good day, Maksim."
He shuts the door when he leaves. I'm thankful for the quietness and immediately plop myself onto the bed, throwing my weapons onto the floor as I do so. Ridding myself of the uncomfortable clothing, I change into something a little bit more friendly. My cat hoodie only reminds me more of Cupid, but I slip it on anyway. I wonder how she's doing.
"Must you always dress like a child?"
"Must you always wear the same expression? Really, you always seem like you're constipated. Sometimes I wonder if you truly are." I retort, earning an ice cold glare from my father.
"Watch your mouth, boy. You'll get yourself thrown into the dungeons, one of these days."
I'd rather be there than in your presence, I want to snap back, but I restrain myself and remain silent.
"As you know, there was an attack last night." Father says.
I nod. "Vampires?"
"Indeed," He moves toward one of the windows, staring down at the kingdom. "Twelve dead. Three missing. Twenty three injured. I was there. I saw the bodies myself. Some of which were young children."
"Children? But Vampires don't feast on their blood." I cock my head to one side.
"The ones that attacked the village do, unfortunately. It's never happened before."
"Since when do you care about the children?" I blurt. Dammit, I really need to shut up.
"Since it became my duty." Father replies, shooting me another one of his glares.
I scoff. "Obviously that doesn't include Carl or me."
"The two of you have already been spoiled enough by your mother. I'm not too fond of brats." Father says, turning his full attention back onto me.
His comment is left ignored. "What are you doing here, then?"
"I'm sending you and Paige to visit the family of the victims after dinner tonight."
"Shouldn't Ryker be the one doing that? He's going to be the next king, after all." I say, trying desperately to get out of this situation.
"The people want to see the famous couple out and about." Father's lips turn up into a smirk. "Already there are conspiracies. Both of you have been left in the dark far too long."
"I wonder why that is," I mutter under my breath.
"What was that?"
Crap. "I was just saying that I agree."
Father raises his brows. "A second ago you were disagreeing."
"Apologies," I say, pacing around. "My mind is not in the best state right now."
"Ah," He moves to close the curtains. "Well, I suppose you could take a short nap. Though I will be expecting to hear from Silas in the next two hours."
General Silas is like my father. He could easily pass for his brother, in fact. But they are not just alike in looks. Their personalities are practically identical. Cold. Heartless. Secretive. They are what anyone would expect a Demon to be like. I'm supposed to be meeting with General Silas later, for my daily patrol.
When I was sent to the other dimension, Silas was not pleased with the information I brought back. Now he plans to send Ryker instead, and honestly, I don't want to know what he'll do there. I know for sure, though, that sending him there will be a huge mistake. He will return with not only the information General Silas needs, but blood stained hands as well. Human blood, to be exact.
I just hope he doesn't touch Cupid.
I haven't told anyone about her. Besides Maksim and my mother. Of course Carl and Paige already know about her, but neither of them have said anything to anyone. I'm surprised Paige kept her mouth shut. She seems to be particularly interested in Cupid. She knows something I don't, that's for sure. Why else would she try to burn her to a crisp? The mystery remains unsolved, but I am determined to unravel it.
"And you shall," I say to Father. He grumbles something, but I don't quite catch it. After he leaves me be, I walk across the room and open the doors to the balcony, taking in the view.
Kairan has always been absolutely beautiful. The palace walls are painted creme, although most of it is covered in moss or vines. The pointed roofs are a rust colour, giving the structure a vibrant look. Yes, the palace is beautiful. But the view from it is breathtaking. In the distance, the land is covered with nothing but vegetation. Down below is the main sqaure, where most of the townsfolk live. Demons live here, closer to the palace, while the rest of the Supernaturals choose to live further away, some even in their own little villages that are scattered across Kairan.
Enchanted forests have their own share of hollows for Pixies and Fairies, but you'll also find Werewolves, Elves, Dryads, Goblins, Dwarves, Gnomes, Unicorns, and Wraiths.
The swamps are probably the most dangerous. Different types of Ghosts haunt anyone and anything that trespasses into their territory, although they can be found anywhere in Kairan. Ghouls will immediately rip you to shreds and make you their dinner if you're spotted. The Supernaturals that are most troublesome in the swamps, though, are the Trolls.
Dragons live in the colder regions, along with Pegasus, Werewolves-though they are not very common in the north-and Cyclopes. Dragons and Cyclopes are usually found in caves, unless they're not out hunting. The Ecret, one of the five thousand species of Dragons, are seen quite often circling the skies above the palace. Beautiful, but deadly. Fortunately for us, their diet only consists of large birds and Griffin eggs.
I sigh, turning away from the wonderful view. I love my home, I do. But after I left-wait, what was that land called, again? There are just too many dimensions. Anyway, after I left that place, I realized how alone I am here in Kairan. Life here is just so dull and boring, especially without any friends. Who knew I would make such connections? Especially Cupid. I laugh to myself when I remember the times when I'd come in through her window. Her face always had this look of disbelief, shock, or confusion.
I don't even notice I'm still smiling until I'm forced to drop it when somebody barges into the balcony.
"Alec,"
Will I ever get time to myself here?
"Paige," I acknowledge.
"We need to talk." She says.
"Can't," I yawn and stretch. "I've got more important things to do. Like sleep."
"It's about Aviva."
Suddenly, I'm not tired anymore.

Hello, lovelies! Wassup? Hehe, so here's a little surprise. A chapter in Alec's POV! How was it? I wanted to give you guys a little peek into what his life is like at the palace, and since we all know that he is both a Demon and a prince, there will be more chapters in his POV in the future :) Oh, by the way, that sentence saying "there's just too many dimensions" was me trying to be sneaky and secretly telling you guys to give me ideas for a name for the other dimension XD Cuz honestly, I have no clue what to call it, and I don't just want to keep calling it "the other dimension" hehe.
Alright, so I've got a few questions for you. My bestie actually came up with these fun questions, so lol say hai to Milklovesmocha4ever
1. If you were in this universe, what Supernatural would you be?
2. What's your favourite Supernatural yet?
3. Who's your favourite character so far?
(Milk had asked me all these questions, but I still don't know what my answers are XD)
Speaking of my bestie, soon enough the two of us will be drawing out a map of Kairan. It's gonna be a really fun and cool activity, so I thought, why not? Annnnnnnd by the end of the story, I will create a glossary containing all the Supernaturals in this book, including illustrations (if they don't look too bad lmao) and explaining things about them.
And here are some adorably amazing covers by AuroraWalker356 ❤
❤ Your favourite stoopid gurl
