Chapter 10: Valentine's Day
A V I V A
Today, was Valentine's Day. My least favourite holiday. Why? Well, the number of clients I get is endless. It was definitely the busiest day of the year for me, so I never got any free time.
Grabbing my bow and arrow, I exit through the back door and make sure all the potions I need are hooked on my belt.
Just like every year, I'm skipping school today. Luckily, Emma, Alec, and Leah volunteered to sell the deserts and candy grams at school for me. I'm grateful to have friends like them.
In about thirty minutes, I reach downtown. I brought a list with me of all the people in town that needed to be matched, so I sit inside my car and look over it. My first two targets were Jordan Brown and Marie Fisher, both twenty-six-year-old Humans and complete strangers to each other. Their pictures were beside their names, so I take a moment to memorize them.
Jordan was about five feet ten with cropped black hair and brown eyes and had pale skin with a square jaw. Marie looked to be five feet seven and also had black hair that fell just past her shoulders. With bright blue eyes and tanned skin, she had a dimple to complete her angelic look.
Smirking slightly, I slip out of the vehicle and walk into the book store where the two are supposed to be. Mom's invisibility potion makes my bow and arrow go unnoticed, along with my belt. Checking each and every aisle, I find myself grinning from ear to ear when I spot the pair in the horror section, back to back.
Now, this is the fun part.
Throwing a quick glance over my shoulder, I take an arrow and decide which of my potions to use.
Love at first sight? Well, it would make my job much easier, but it's too cliché for my liking. Hate at first sight would be much more entertaining, but I don't have the energy to be evil today.
Closing my eyes, I dip the head of the arrow into one of the bottles randomly. I open them when I decide who to aim for. Jordan, or Marie?
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, catch a tiger by the toe. If he--
The arrow slices through the air, hitting Jordan's left side of his chest, right where his heart is. He freezes for a second. I hide behind the tall shelf when he turns to look around, but when I look back, he's tumbling backwards into Marie. She lets out a squeal and they both fall to the carpeted ground, the books that were in their hands falling with them.
I laugh quietly when I see their position. Marie's face was squished against Jordan's chest, both of them too shocked to move.
Ah, the old Toppled Love potion. The potion makes an individual crash into their Soulmate quite dramatically, like what I just witnessed. It's also pretty cliché, but it should do the trick.
What I don't expect, is Marie's next actions.
She grabs a book and starts hitting Jordan's head with it, all the while still sitting on top of him.
Lovely.
"I don't know who you are, but I am going to kill you for making me rip my page!" Marie exclaims, her face getting redder and redder by the second.
"Ow! I'm sorry, woman! Just let me live! I'll buy you a new book if you want!" Jordan covers his head with his hands.
Marie stops and sets the book aside, getting off of him. "Crap, I didn't know I was that strong. Damn boy, you just boosted my ego. Thanks a lot, I needed that."
"My work here is done," I mutter under my breath and exit the store, chuckling lightly.
The day speeds by with me walking and shooting arrows through the streets that are decorated with pink and red heart-shaped balloons. The sun was starting to set and the sky was tinted a shade of pink, making the scenery look more romantic.
Sigh.
I slump into the driver's seat after finally completing my quest. One hundred and twenty nine pairs have been matched today, all in the span of four hours. I really should give myself a pat on the back since I'm getting better at this every year.
When I get home, I greet both my parents and Faith and tell them I'm heading to bed. But instead, my phone started ringing as soon as I flopped down on the comfy mattress.
"Hello?" I say, my voice coming out a little raspy.
"Hey, Cupid. How was your day?"
I smile at the sound of Alec's surprisingly soothing voice. "Exhausting, but I got everything done. All thanks to you guys, really."
"Oh! Yeah, about that, we raised over two hundred bucks."
My brows shoot up. I really wasn't expecting that. People don't usually buy the treats, and the most I've ever earned was one hundred and fifty dollars.
"That's . . . wow, that's great. Thanks so much for helping out today, Kitty."
I hear him laugh softly from the other line. Then he says, "No problem. Hey, do me a favour?"
"Sure, what?" I ask him.
"Could you open your window? It's freezing out here," Alec requests. My eyes automatically snap to the window.
I stand up from the bed and slide it open, letting Alec in, along with the cold February breeze. I laugh when I notice he's wearing his black cat hoodie again, and I can't stop myself from standing on my toes and flicking the triangular ears.
He grins, showing off his perfect white teeth. "Hi, Cupid."
I lift a brow and run across the room to lock the door, in case Mom decides to barge in again. "Hi, Kitty."
"I'm cold," He mutters, strolling over my bed and covering himself with the blankets.
I yawn and slide in next to him, staring at the ceiling. "Valentine's day sucks."
"Why? Is someone sad they don't have a valentine?" He teases, nudging me.
I scoff and roll my eyes.
Alec chuckles and says, "Well, if it makes you feel any better, I don't have one either."
I crack a smile at that. How come no one asked him?
"It just makes me feel lonely," I admit, frowning. "I'm here matching everyone up while I don't even have my own Soulmate, and I never will."
Alec shifts so that he's looking at me. My eyes widen when he pulls me into a tight hug, but I immediately feel relaxed.
"Well, how about you be my valentine, Cupid?" He asks in a whisper.
My lips break into a grin. "Seriously, Kitty?"
He nods, the corners of his lips twitching up. "Yup. Why not?"
I stick my tongue out at him and rest my head on his chest, my eyelids feeling heavy. "Mhm, okay. Fine."
How is it possible for one to be so sweet? Whoever his Soulmate is, she sure is one lucky girl. The Nymphs were probably just messing with me when I saw no vision.
"Oh, uh, I hope you don't mind but I ate the leftover macarons. They were just too good to resist." He murmurs, earning a soft laugh from me.
Maybe today wasn't so bad, after all.
♡♡♡
Happy Valentine's day!!! Well, technically it's not Valentine's anymore. I completed this chapter exactly thirty minutes after. 😂😭 Welp, I tried.
Anyways, how'd you guys like it? Anything you wished would've happened?
Don't forget to vote and comment!
❤ Chloe
