The days seem to be getting faster and faster by the minute.
It's Friday, I had to take a step back, get all the way real with my life. Esma will forget in two days, find her match tomorrow and I will have to live with that.
That is that. It's all it can be, an incomplete sentence, a half-written story. Finished, without an ending.
Esma's desire will be stronger than ever in these last 3 days. So Strong that once again I see her marker on my iMatch coming together with Adam.
I try to remind myself its only the magic that keeps making her go back to him, but its exhausting watching someone you really like being into someone else.
I decided this time to go after her. I grab my coat, fixing my brown hair in the mirror as I walk out the hotel room.
I walk at a normal pace, not looking forward to my encounter with this Adam guy again. They are at the same coffee store as last time. I turn around the corner scanning the seats to see two familiar heads.
Only this time he had his tongue down her fucking throat.
My hands ball into fists, I started to take a step forward until one of the waitresses appeared in front of me.
"Sorry." She says, looking up at me, her eyes slightly widening. "Um, can I get you anything?"
"No, its fine." I say.
I hardly notice her has I see Esma pull away, looking over at me noticing my voice. Adam then looks towards me, furrowing his brows and clenching his jaw. His hands were still on either side of her waist.
I looked down at the blonde haired girl that was about to walk off.
"Wait." I say.
She looks up, giving a smile.
"Yes?"
I don't stop myself, I don't even think before I speak. "Do you work here everyday and make the coffees?"
"Yes." She blushes. I keep my eyes on her Hazel ones.
"Good, because you make the best coffees on the house, so you might be expecting more of me." i smile at her.
"Thank you so much and that would be nice. wait here, I'll make one for you on the house." She gives smile, looking me up and down before she returns back to the kitchen area.
I need to start getting over Esma. Before I start loving her.
I sit down at one of the seats, waiting for my coffee as my sunlight was blocked by the girl with brown hair. Her face was a mix between confusement, annoyance, and regret.
"What was... that?" she asks, trying to sound interested. Instead I notice a strain of annoyance out of her voice.
I shrug looking into her brown eyes. "Well, what was that?" I asked her nodding my head in Adams direction with the same tone.
She takes a breath leaning forward. "Am I not allowed to kiss a boy?"
I lean forward too. "Am I not allowed to flirt with a girl?"
Her eyebrows knot together, "You just did that because you saw me with Adam."
"Well I think it was better then punching his face in. Don't you agree?" I whispered to her, so he wouldn't hear.
"No. But that's usually what normal people do when they are angry. Not just walk up to some random girl and pretend to be into her." she snaps.
"I'm not a normal human, Esma. I never was. So why are you expecting me to act like one?"
She sits back in silence, not wanting to argue anymore.
"On the house." The blonde girl appeared, smiling at me. I thanked the waitress as I watched Esma stare after her.
"Why do you care anyway?" I ask gently. "You like Adam. You were just kissing him."
"You and I both know that I can't control that mistake of an arrow you shot. One minute I like him, next minute you come along and my head gets fuzzy and everything gets confusing." She says looking upset.
"Once you come into view or touch, Its like you make the desire disappear." She stands up, looking over at Adam.
"Lets go home." she says to me. I sat in silence as I watched her say goodbye to Adam. He nodded and shot bullet eyes in my direction. I glare back at him.
"All I know is that I am most definitely on his death list. no doubt." I say as Esma and I walk back to her apartment.
"Yeah and he's probably on yours." She says, curving her lips into a slight smile.
Despite our argument, she was quickly to dismiss it, putting it into the past in which wont be discussed again. Things were awkward until we got to the door of her house where I said goodbye and left. She didn't go in straight away. Instead she stood at her porch watching me walk away, back to my hotel room.
"Everton." I hear her voice call me when I was nearly out of sight.
I paused, looking back at the girl with brown hair, on her porch steps, with hope in her eyes.
"Stay?"
Although it was the last thing I expected her to say,
Although it was the last thing I should be doing so close to the end,
I nod and my feet couldn't stop themselves as I walk back towards her as she opened the door, leaving it open for me to follow her inside.
"Hey, Thank you." Esma says before going into her room.
"I want to." I say. "Its not just apart of my job." I smile.
She smiles tiredly back before closing the door to her bedroom.
The cupid system should be back up and running tomorrow and as it was still light outside I decided to make a start of dinner. I left Esma in peace as the frypan sizzled with rice and veggies, leaving the whole house smelling delicious.
Esma's door opened to the smell, her hair was messy and she was dressed in her pj's. She must have had a nap, so hopefully the awkwardness has disappeared.
"Usually I don't like being woken up by someone banging around in my kitchen... but because you made me dinner, I'll make an exception." She says smiling, walking over to the fried rice.
I shook my head, spooning the fried rice into a bowl. I turned around to pass it to her but she had already taken it out my hands and then sat down on the table mumbling 'thankyou' with a mouthful of rice.
"Someone's hungry." I say grabbing a bowl for myself.
"Saturday tomorrow." I point out. "You'll probably get to find out your match."
"And you'll find out yours?" she questioned in between her mouthful of food.
"Yeah." I nod. I don't think I will look at it though.
"It's gone so fast."
"Like my fried rice." I point to her empty bowl.
"And like your head if you tell me there's no more of it." She says jokingly pushing her plate towards me.
I chuckle and put the rest of what was left in her bowl and handed it back to her.
"There you go, Sweetheart. Enjoy it because there's none left after that."
She glances at me for a second before smiling and scoffing it down her throat.
"Poor guy." I mumble as I wash the pan.
Esma shoots me a playful glare. "He will be fine."
"Until he realises he will have to feed you so much food." I smirk.
She gets up, putting her plate in the sink I filled up. "What can I say? Food just won't make me fat so I eat a lot of it."
The light from the window slowly disappeared as it approached the night. Esma and I were quietly sitting on her sofa watching tv, making fun of people in adverts and trying to find a decent film to actually watch. Soon we landed on a children's film that Esma had watched with Noah before.
The film was about this character with magical ice powers that locked herself away in an ice tower while her sister tried to find her. Personally I found it cringey with all the unnecessary singing, but at least the talking snowman had some humor. Half way through the movie I felt something thud against my shoulder.
Esma's snoring head to be specific.
I sat perfectly still, trying not to wake her as my heart thudded against my chest. I turned off the Tv and rested my own head back on the couch, closing my eyes drifting into sleep myself.
~~
I jolted awake at the sound of my iMatch buzzing. I lift my arm up to turn off the notification. I look around remembering that I didn't go to bed last night, instead I was laid down on the couch with Esma half laying on top of me.
Oh God.
She stirs awake, lifting her head up to meet my eyes. "Oh."
She shifts uncomfortably, "I think your arm is..." She furrows her eyebrows looking up at me. One arm is lifted off her back and the other is hanging over the side of the couch.
Umm
Her eyes widened as she stops herself. "Oh that's not your arm.." She whispers, her face reddening.
No. No its not.
We both stare at each other for a solid minute before she lets out a small laugh, cupping her hands over her mouth.
"Sorry." She says starting to get up off me as she holds in her laughter.
I started to laugh with her. "I can't believe you thought it was my arm."
She stood up, scooping her hair to the side. "How would have I known?" she laughs.
"They are too very different things you know." I say raising my eyebrows sitting up.
"Well I've never fallen asleep on top of someone, so I had no idea!" she covers her face in her hands to hide her embarrassment.
"Well, I'm gonna shower." I say trying to hide my smile from her to not make her more embarrassed.
"Good idea, I'll make breakfast." She turned on her heel and hurried to the kitchen.
I walked to the shower, checking my iMatch notification. My father says I can finally come back to the cupid world as the system will be up in an hour. The question is, what will be the punishment for my mother?
After I rinse off the embarrassing events from this morning, I wrap a towel around my waist remembering I don't have any spare clothes with me. Just as I was about to put on my old ones for now, a small knock came from outside the bathroom door.
I opened it slightly to see Esma holding some of my clothes. "Sorry, But I found some clothes you left here and I figured you probably would want them." Her eyes travel down my chest for a second before snapping back up to my face.
"Oh cool, thanks." I open the door wider as she passes them to me. Her eyes are lost wondering from my face to the door to the floor and at my face again. Time seems to stop as she doesn't quite move after she hands the clothes to me.
Please walk away. Before I do something stupid.
But she doesn't. In-fact she's closer than she was, staring at me before her eyes travel down to my chest. Before anything happened she puts her fist up to my abs punching them lightly.
"Do all Cupids have to muscle up for there arrow shooting skills?" She asks trying to ease the tension. But unfortunately she stood there far too long and I am not at ease.
I grab her hand that was still in a fist at my chest moving it away, my other hand took her waist bringing her closer. And the mistake she made, was letting me.
She knew what was coming, we both did. And at that moment neither of us cared about True Love, or how her match would be discovered today. Because it was too late to pull back now.
I felt my wings appear, sending a shiver down my back as my lips met hers, gently but with so much intention. And god was it heaven in a human world.
My white wings wrapped around her as I held her face in my hands. Her arms were already around my neck pulling me closer. I felt her hands travel down my chest as we both pulled away breathing heavily, out of shock.
"Well..." I say swallowing, my heart jumping out of my chest. "We should probably get ready to go."
She nods, "Yes, we should. Um I'll leave you to it." She says trying to hide a smile. She avoids my gaze, blushing as she takes her hand off my chest and stepping backwards.
She flickers her eyes up to mine for a second before turning around. I watch her walk into her room, while picking up my clothes I dropped.
We just made things a whole lot worse.
