Prologue

The party that night was good.

Ophelia had chosen well. There was a good atmosphere in the place, pumping music and dark little corners perfect for a night time adventure. I loved matching people up at parties and sending them off. Nine times out of ten the magic only lasted for one night. But there were a few people who were still dating all because of me and I thought that was magical.

Take my friend Ophelia for example. She had a crush on the star of the football team for years. She was lovesick. When he broke up with his girlfriend she couldn't wait to fall into his arms.

It was me that changed all that. He wasn't right for her, despite her thoughts. I paired her up with someone else and she had never been happier.

Tonight's couple was Jason and Katrin. Kat was also one of my best friends, and it was great to finally pair her up. They were still huddled underneath the stairs. Every so often I heard one of Kat's famous giggles. Jason must have been doing a good job.

"Rosie, the bus is leaving soon. We need to go." Ophelia warned me. I rolled my eyes.

"It's such a good party...." I whined. She gave me the look.

"Do you really want your parents to know you were out partying?"

She had a point. Slowly, I moved out of my little corner. "We need to get Kat." I pointed out.

Ophelia smirked. "I'm not going in there. Disturb them at your peril."

Hmm. I didn't exactly want to invade their privacy either. I grabbed my heels from the kitchen countertop and trudged out the door as if I'd just been informed my parents had died.

"There's the bus!" She gasped. "It's leaving!"

I ran out across the road. I needed to catch that bus. I couldn't let my parents know I had been on a night out.

I didn't see the car until it was too late.
