Chapter Four
Kelly found Mae slumped at her desk, head on the keyboard, snoring contentedly.
"Mae!" She hissed. "Wake up!"
Slowly, her eyelids fluttered open and she rubbed at them. They were all bloodshot and had heavy bags. The computer screen was still showing the case submitted for approval she had started looking at before she drifted off. She must have had a little doze. But when she glanced at the clock hanging up on her office wall, she was shocked to discover she had been asleep nearly three hours. "My goodness," she breathed.
Kelly glanced at her, worriedly. Mae was known for her great work ethic, and it was one of the few times Kelly had ever seen her fall asleep on the job. Which must mean there was something seriously wrong.

As soon as Fiona gave me an awkward smile and headed out the door, I started unpacking.
The contents of the case didn't get any better as I moved on. I held up a skirt so short I was actually convinced it was a disfigured pink belt. Seriously?!
Thankfully, at the bottom was all of my beauty products, my straighteners, ladies pads, as well as a shiny pink iPhone. I held it up, admiring it. It was a lot better than the ancient Nokia (it didn't even have a touch screen!) that I used to own, but I still wished it came with that super cool finger scanner thing.
I turned on the phone, and sure enough, on my list of contacts was Juliet's number, along with the reminder to call her once a day. I flopped down on my bed, deciding now was as good a time as any.
The phone rang exactly once before she picked up. "Yes, Jessica?" She said collectedly.
I gritted my teeth. "It's Rosie."
I may not have been able to see her but I could bet a million bucks she was wearing that infuriating smile. "Well, it's Jessica now. And I'd thank you not to talk to your superiors like that."
"And I'd thank you not to be such a bitch," I murmured. Then I realised because the phone was still pressed up to my mouth she could hear me.
"Language. Anyway, you've checked in, bye for now."
"Wait!" I said desperately, shooting up like a shot. "You can't go! I need to speak to you!"
She laughed. Not a funny haha laugh but a you're such an idiot laugh. "What made you think I should like to speak with you? Bye!"
"Please!" I begged but it's too late. The phone beeped twice to indicate the call was over. Why did I have to get stuck with her? Now I was unable to sort out the wardrobe catastrophe and to let the agency know I was dealing with my brother.
But then I remembered Kelly's response when I asked her about seeing my family again. It was a definite no-no. And despite the fact it was rather weird I was going to be spending the next few weeks with my brother who had absolutely no idea who I was, at least I got to see him. That's something, I guess.

Fiona burst through the door. I pulled out my earphones, and hit pause on 'Blank Space'. Taylor Swift would have to wait.
"Oh my goodness, Rosie, I'm so sorry!" She apologised, looking really ashamed of herself - though I'd no idea why. "I completely forgot you only came this year and you don't know anyone here! It's really rude of me not to introduce you to anyone."
I gave her a half hearted smile. To be honest, I wasn't really there to make friends with others, just Fiona herself. "That's alright."
"No, it's really not!" She amended me. "Come on, there's a group of us in the rec room, they'll be more than happy to see you." She gave me puppy dog eyes.
I sighed and gave in. I need to get to know her a little more anyway. "Fine. Just let me change." I was currently dressed in one of the ridiculously revealing tops and belt skirts, with a white fluffy dressing gown on top. Fiona grinned, and averted her eyes, waiting for me to get changed.
Okay... I was sort of hoping she would have left me alone for a few minutes. Ever heard of privacy? I went over to the wardrobe, and grimaced as I found nothing suitable for going to meet her friends. In the end, I threw on three pairs of tights, hoping that put together they'd resemble leggings, with a belt skirt, and a leather jacket pulled over a crop top with a tight white vest beneath it. Luckily there was some alright shoes. Fiona glanced at me, and I could tell she was trying to contain laughter. Her lips twitched. "What exactly did you pack?"
I scowled. "Somebody packed for me, as a joke. Believe me, as soon as I get to a decent clothes shop, I will be ditching all of this."
Her face brightened. "Me and the girls are going shopping on Saturday. You should come too. We want to get new outfits for the welcome back party. Nathan always hosts one." Her face came over all dreamy. "I can't wait."
I tried to steer the subject away from Nathan as we headed towards the rec room. "I don't know if all your friends will want me tagging along," I said, although I know that wouldn't change her mind.
She shook her head. "No, no, they'd love for you to come!" She beamed. "Oh look, there they are!"
In the corner of the room was a group that can only be described as Geek Squad. There was two other girls wearing much the same clothing as Fiona, and two boys animatedly discussing Minecraft's latest update. One of which, surprise surprise, was none other than my brother.
"Hey guys!" Fiona said cheerily, sitting down beside one of the girls and patting the seat next to her invitingly. I sat down, rather reluctantly, pulling my jacket tighter as I saw the full group stare at my outfit and silently laugh. Or not so silently in the ginger haired girl's case. I scowled, and they exchanged glances with each other. "This is Rosie, albeit Jessica Kinney, who's my new roommate!"
There was a few over enthusiastic hellos and looks at Fiona. OK, I didn't exactly look as if I fitted in with this gang. But I had to, if I wanted to be a proper Cupid.
"I'm Harriet," the girl with the ginger hair told me after a moment's awkward silence. "This is Julia, and the two boys are Finn and Owen." She pointed to each individual.
"We've met already," Owen explained. "Although I seem to remember you had better dress sense." He added with a twinkle in his eye.
If I pulled this jacket any tighter I think it was going to rip.
Julia looked at me slowly, eyeing me up from top to bottom. "You said your name is Rosie, but that is not fully correct as your real name is Jessica."
I half wanted to correct her myself and yell, "actually, my real name's Rosalind, so it's YOU that's not fully correct!" And my mouth opened to say that, but than on second thoughts I closed it again, so now I looked like a fish.
"You have a nickname," she informed me, even though I knew that already. Duh! "Do you know that 762,958 people in the USA share your name Jessica? It is statistically the 26th most popular name in the USA. As for your surname, Kinney, 39,768 people in the USA share it, and it is statistically the 921st most popular surname in the USA. Then for you nickname; Rosie. 85,639 people in the USA share it, it is statistically the 323rd most popular name in the USA. Overall, there is 100 people in the USA called Jessica Kinney. However, there are only twelve Rosie Kinney's. Did you shorten your name to be more unique?"
I sat in stunned silence, staring at Julia, who didn't even seem slightly out of breath after rattling off all that information. She looked at me expectantly. "Um... To be honest I just shortened it because Rosie sounds nicer?" I fumbled.
Finn laughed. "Don't worry, whenever she meets someone she tells them all about their name. Do you know during the summer she sat in her bedroom, looked up the names of all the new students and made sure to know their name facts?! You were late in, she only researched you there now, and it's lucky there's someone in our class called Rosie."
"She must have a very photographic memory," I said, feeling slightly better now that I knew she didn't just do this to me. There was yet another moment of awkward silence.
"I told her she can come shopping with us to get new clothes on Saturday." Fiona informed the two girls with a none too subtle dig in the ribs. "Won't that be nice?"
Julia massaged her ribs while Harriet whispered, "did you have to invite her?" I felt like seriously misplaced baggage at an airport that really should be with its owner, but some kind person is trying to return me even though the people she's travelling with clearly can't be bothered making an effort.
"I need to pee..." I murmured before sprinting out of there. Oh my god, what had happened to me? I couldn't even get a bunch of geeks to like me! I decided to head back to my room. At least Taylor Swift had no objections to me.
Five minutes later, I realised even that was in jeopardy as my phone ran out of charge and conveniently enough there was not a charger to be found. Now I was bored, badly dressed, a loser AND hungry. My stomach was growling, "feed me, feed me."
I stripped off and threw on a plain t shirt and baggy jeans belonging to Fiona with her vibrant yellow coat over it. I thought I'd head into the town for pizza. You couldn't go much wrong with pizza.
I slipped out the back entrance so I didn't have to pass the gang in the rec room. Night time was fast approaching, and the bright sunlight had faded to a dim glow as it set. The sky was streaked with pinks and oranges, swirling around each other in perfect harmony. Despite the fact the sun was setting, it was still brilliantly warm, and I tilted my head up towards the sun, shrugging off my coat and dangling it over my arm. I enjoyed the short walk to the nearby pizza place. The silence out there was so beautiful after the loudness of college.
The pizza place was a little hard to find, tucked down an alleyway that looked as if it wasn't often used. Gingerly, I stepped over an abandoned Coke can squirting liquid in every direction. The place didn't exactly look too welcoming, but I bravely pushed at the big red doors.
Inside was so much nicer. There was a lovely family ambience, and it was full of laughter and chat. The lights over head were bright, and shined down illuminating every corner. I sat down at a round wooden table, polished and glimmering. I draped my (well, Fiona's) coat over the edge of my chair, and I finally caught sight of the name hanging above the counter, 'Hidden Treasure'. I grinned; they've got that one right.
"Would you like to order?" A waitress asked, sporting a black and white checked tee and a green apron with the logo on the bottom left, just like all the others. She held a small notepad up, ready to take my order.
"Can I have a pepperoni pizza please?" I chose. "With Fanta Lemon."
She nodded, scribbling it down. "Sure. It will be ready soon."
I leant back, relaxing in my chair. Now that I was feeling a little better, I realised I needed to make more of an effort with Fiona's friends. The first stage to completing the mission was to become her friend, and so far I wasn't doing too great.
"Rosie!" I was jerked out of my daydreams, and spotted Julia, Harriet, and none other than Fiona herself headed towards me. "We were coming here for a pizza, we had no idea you knew about this place too!"
The trio came over and sat in the empty chairs at my table. I gave them my best fake smile. "I've just ordered, would you like something too?"
"Anyway, we just wanted to say sorry for not really giving you a chance." Julia said. I nearly smirked, before I realised she was deadly serious, which just made me uncomfortable. "It's because you're so different to us. You look like somebody who should be in the popular crowd, not with all of us geeks. Although admittedly, your fashion sense leaves a lot to be desired."
I was ready to retort once again that I did not pack my case, my new worst enemy did, when they burst into laughter. It took me a confused moment to work out they were only joking.
Suddenly, I was disturbed by the arrival of my steaming hot pizza. I lifted up a thick, gooey slice and bite into utter deliciousness. "Mmm, this is so good." I said through a mouthful of heaven. "Are you sure you guys wouldn't..." I stopped in my tracks as I realised they were all digging into slices of my pizza too. Oh well. I could always order more.
We left the pizza place that night full, content, and chatting. The other two weren't so bad once you got to know them. And neither was Fiona, I suppose.
"That was a great night," she grinned as we headed up to our room, Julia and Harriet having already gone to theirs. I nodded in agreement. "But just one thing ; are you wearing my clothes?!"
