Twenty-Two
What he saw will forever remain branded in his memory.
Red. The beautiful white dress was stained with crimson red and she was crumpled on the floor.
Cupid ran as fast as he could and saw Jared sprawled on the floor, a wide gash on his forehead. Ella was holding his head in her hands and she was crying.
He didn't say a word, he just pulled her in for a hug but she flinched pulling away.
That was when he saw it.
The knife was still stuck in her side. She had been stabbed and yet she was crying over her dead boyfriend.
Yes, Jared was dead for he could only hear the sound of two heartbeats—his own and Ella's own.
"Cupid, th-they came a-and..."
She broke off and burst into tears wheezing slightly from the pain.
"You never listen, Cupid!"
The loud angry voice behind him had him whirling around to come face to face with piercing green eyes.
"Trition?" He had to be sure.
"I warned you, Cupid!" Trition snapped coming towards him.
He looked scary with his red angry face, 6ft8 tall, broad shoulders, and muscular body. His shaggy long brown hair was tied up in a bun and dripping wet.
Suddenly his eyes widened in surprise. "You sent me a letter."
Trition nodded running a hand through his hair and pulling it down.
"I overheard Cleodora and Glaucus yesterday and I had to send the letter immediately hoping your daft brain will understand!"
Tears filled Cupid's eyes. "It was the merfolks."
Trition nodded. "She was here for the relic."
"I heard people screaming in pain," Ella muttered quietly, "It was coming from this river so I wanted to help and Jared offered to come with me."
"Save your strength, Ella," Cupid hushed her.
"Speak mortal, I need to know what happened."
"We saw a woman, she was in the river I thought she was drowning I raced to save her and she pulled me in trying to drown me," Ella continued, "Jared rushed to save me but a guy came out of nowhere and pushed him so hard he hit his forehead on a rock. The woman collected the necklace and stabbed me then they disappeared."
"When did the merfolks become so violent?" Cupid's eyes bored holes into Trition.
Trition sighed. "It's just Cleodora and Glaucus."
"Why didn't your father stop them? Poseidon is the sea god for crying out loud."
"And Cleodora is a river goddess daughter. She's also my father's lover," Trition replied.
"Glaucus got roped into this plan how? He was a mortal that the gods granted the power of immortality and to become part of the sea gods."
Trition shook his head, "Glaucus is in love with Cleodora, he's just helping her."
"We need to save her," Cupid said staring at Ella. Her face looked pale and her lips were slowly turning blue.
"I'll just summon Asclepius," Trition said, "He has a vial portion that could also bring the other mortal back to life."
Cupid heaved a sigh of relief. "That's great news."
"We need to destroy that relic, Cupid," Trition said in a serious tone.
Cupid held onto Ella. "She's going cold, Trition."
Trition sighed. "I don't know what to do, I'm the god of water remember, colder."
"We need to keep her and Jared warm," Cupid panicked.
"Why are you bothering yourself over the life of a mere mortal?" Trition snapped.
"You would never understand, Trition."
"Well, look who's finally grown a heart," Trition teased, "Don't tell me she's your lover."
"This situation is too critical to jest about," Cupid snapped as Ella groaned in his arms. She was still breathing.
"Relax, have you met Asclepius? There's nothing he can't do, he's the god of healing," Trition said in an assuring tone.
Cupid nodded then his mind wandered off, wondering how scared Ella must have been.
"What could be so important about that relic that Cleodora and her consort is willing to face Zeus' wrath?" Cupid asked.
Cupid noticed the immediate change of aura in Trition. He could perceive fear all around Trition. What was he scared of?
"When they unlock that relic, not even Zeus or any other immortal can stop them."
Goosebumps ran down Cupid's arm at the tone of Trition's voice. What could be in the relic that even the immortals were scared of?
"But if it was that important why bury it so carelessly?" Cupid asked.
Trition shook his head. "It wasn't buried carelessly, it was activated when you started the treasure hunt with them."
Cupid stared at him blankly. He was confused and had no idea what he was talking about.
"But to be activated, two powerful gods would be needed," Trition continued thoughtfully.
Just then there was a flash of light and a man appeared. He had long silver hair and was dressed in a long flowing white cassock, he looked like someone straight out of the 16th century.
His deep violet eyes locked on Jared and he shook his head. He wasn't muscular like most gods he looked human although he was immortal.
He was Asclepius, the god of healing.
"Has the relic been recovered?" He asked.
"What relic?" A voice asked behind them.
Standing behind them was Sacha and her eyes grew wide when she saw Asclepius.
"Daughter of The Morrigan, are you also helping Cupid on his quest?"
Cupid chuckled so hard he forgot he was in the midst of a tragic event.
"Don't mind her eye color Asclepius, Sacha is weird like that."
"Sacha?" Asclepius lifted an arched brow at her, a smile tugging at his lips.
"Hello, annoying stranger," Sacha muttered under her breath.
Trition's eyes widened as he stared at Sacha.
"It can't be."
Cupid stared at them an annoying frown on Sacha's lips.
"Way to blow my cover, Healer," Sacha snapped.
"Sacha?" Cupid frowned staring at her.
"Yes Cupid, I'm the last daughter of The Morrigan, Scáthach, the reason why that relic was discovered," Sacha said with an eye-roll.
"You-you're a goddess?" Cupid asked with a shocked expression.
