Twenty-Four
"How do we get to the Underworld?"
Trition glared at Cupid. "First you agree to go on this suicide mission with me then you ask me for directions? Get lost, Cupid."
"Gladly, at least it'd be the both of us," Cupid replied in a teasing tone.
Trition chuckled. "With your happy aura, it's hard to stay mad at you."
"Relax, we ain't gonna die," Cupid said.
"Nope but your positivity is gonna get us killed," Trition mused.
"Hades isn't that bad just misunderstood," Cupid shrugged.
"Yeah, he has to be. He's a crazy guy in charge of dead souls." Trition shivered.
"I'm sure he's changed since Persephone came over there," Cupid said.
"Then why does he have a three-headed dog?"
"Cerberus is his pet and guard."
"You seem to know a lot about Hades," Trition said eying him warily.
"I read it from the scrolls when I was in Olympus," Cupid replied.
Trition huffed and came to a stop in front of a small river where a ferryman stood overlooking the water.
They were standing at the only river left in the land of the living before they journeyed into the Underworld.
"Charon," Trition called fearfully.
The man was dressed in a black cloak and his face was etched in a permanent frown. He was the ferryman that ferried souls to the Underworld.
"I do not ferry the living into Underworld unless you have a dead soul else depart."
Even his voice sounded cold, Cupid shivered involuntarily.
"Please, Charon we need to see Hades," Cupid pleaded.
He extended his palm towards them and Trition placed five gold coins in them. He readied his boat and they got in.
"Do not touch the water or drink any of it," he warned sternly.
The boat began rowing and soon they entered a place filled with fog. Cupid could feel the atmosphere change immediately and he tensed up, even Trition huddled beside him.
At one point they crossed the first river, then they continued. In some places, they heard screams but saw no one.
The trees looked dark and dangerous, haunted as if something was spying on them. Something wicked.
Soon he lost track of time and just watched his surroundings. The ferryman wasn't one for conversations either because he ignored them.
But why would he be when he ferried only souls?
Cupid couldn't help but let his mind wander as he thought about different things. He wondered if Sacha had gotten back from the journey.
Turning towards Trition, he frowned. "What was in that relic?"
"Powerful magic capable of bringing doom to all," Trition replied shakily.
Cupid nodded. He could only hope Sacha will return safely.
Suddenly, Trition burst into laughter that earned him a glare from Charon and a weird look from Cupid.
"What amuses you, Trition?"
"I just can't believe you've been with a goddess for a while and you never realized it," Trition chortled.
Cupid frowned. "She disguised herself, idiot."
"What about her strength stupid?!"
They kept on bickering forgetting for a second that they were going to the Underworld and going to see the king of death.
That was until the boat came to an abrupt halt they fell on their face.
"Welcome to the Underworld, fools," Charon sneered at them.
Cupid and Trition got out of the boat to behold an imposing castle that didn't look so deathly but the voices resonating from the inside were enough to bring a man to his knees.
"If you survive and need a ride home, next fare is twenty gold coins because of all your noise," Charon added.
"What?!" Trition stared at him incredulously, "You can't steal from us like this."
"Then remain here I'm sure Hades will have a job for you both to do," he chuckled and turned his boat ferrying away.
Cupid was startled. The ferryman had laughed and even though it sounded like an old lady croaking then there was still hope.
"Go stand before that door, Cupid," Trition said.
Cupid glared at him. "Why should I be the one to stand there?"
"Because you have the positive vibes."
"So?"
"So the giant dog will not eat you."
"What makes you so sure of that?"
"Because you said so."
"I cannot..."
"Silence!"
Cupid and Trition shuddered as the door was thrown open and Hades stood before all clad in black and his three-headed dog was glaring at them, his mouth wide open ready to devour them.
"Fancy bumping into you here, Hades," Cupid chuckled nervously.
Hades narrowed his dark eyes at them. "You think this is funny?"
"Absolutely not, do not pay attention to Cupid," Trition added hastily.
"You have come to my dwelling to steal from me!" He roared with anger.
"I thought you said he's misunderstood it's time you make him understand, Cupid," Trition mumbled.
Cerberus stood very alert his ears twitching waiting for the command to attack but none came and yet his master was vibrating with anger.
"It's not like that, Hades we came to ask for your help," Cupid said.
"Not granted now get out!" He roared.
"With pleasure," Trition nodded and scurried away but when he turned around Cupid wasn't following him.
"I came here with a mission, Hades and you will not stop me from accomplishing it so just hear me out," Cupid stated firmly.
Hades locked eyes with him. "Speaking about missions, Cupid don't you have to make a human fall in love before Christmas? Time's ticking."
"All the more reason for you to hear them out, My Lord."
They all whirled around at the sweet feminine voice behind them.
Persephone.
She was beautifully dressed in a long flowing white gown, her striking golden hair and green eyes seemed like the only radiant thing in the Underworld.
And when she smiled, Hades turned to puddle.
The man who had been roaring and snapping at them was instantly transformed into a little child craving for candy, even the vicious dog now looked like a cute puppy.
"Please hear them out my love, I'm sure it must be important to make Cupid forfeit his mission and come here," she continued.
Hades nodded. "Of course, my beloved," then he turned towards them with a grim smile, "Make the time count."
