Third Person POV
The ocean was relatively calm today. The waves lapped up onto the shore without much of a fight, fish jumped out of the water in a sort of graceful formation, and the shining sun making the ocean shimmer like diamonds. There was one person on the beach today, as the beach was abandoned in favor of the park's festival today. They came here knowing this, they always preferred to be alone over being around other people. They were pretty introverted, but there are those few people who don't drain their battery. The mermaid of the sea was one of them, Cala Maria. She was a sweet woman, someone who didn't mind that they preferred to be quiet, someone who was willing to wait for them to answer without being pushy, someone that cared for them. Speaking of which, the ocean's waves started to pick up, signaling the appearance of said mermaid. The individual looked up at the sound of the ocean picking up, smiling to themselves as they realized what it met. Cala soon surfaced from the water, fixing her octopus bangs in her signature fashion before smiling at them. They waved at the mermaid before standing up and heading to a nearby balcony so they could talk to her. Once they reached the balcony, they smiled at Cala as she swam closer to them. Cala was always ten times her original size in the water, so it made communication a little adventure for her friend.
"Yoo hoo cutie! Whatcha doing out here?" She asked, tilting her head in cute curiosity. They shrugged, blushing a tiny bit.
"Too many people for me. I prefer being alone, you know," they answered, fixing their shirt from running to the balcony. Cala sighed and giggled to herself. She should have known that was the reason they came to the beach. It was the same way when they first met. Cala had happened to surface for some sun and had met them on the beach recharging from a long day of too much social interaction.
"Wait, why aren't you there? You've been excited about this festival for months," they asked, worried. Cala blushed in embarrassment as she recalled why she didn't show.
"Rumor and I have a falling out. She's running the event so I thought I shouldn't go," she answered truthfully. They frowned. They were friends with Rumor Honeybottoms too, and the conversation they had with her where Rumor got insanely aggressive and angry on the topic of Cala made much more sense. They sighed and motioned for Cala to lower her head to where they could reach it. Confused, Cala obliged, lowering her head so they could reach it. They kissed Cala's cheek, and Cala's face became blood red with blush.
"Could you apologize to her? She seemed upset," they requested, smiling softly. Cala was almost spellbound, blinking quickly to recollect her scattered thoughts. She was used to being flirted with, but this time just seemed so... genuine and sweet.
"S-Sure, yeah, I will," she agreed, her brain still trying to collect itself. They smiled and place their left hand on her right cheek.
"Good. I've got to go, I promised to help Mugman with something. I'll be back tomorrow," they announced, waving at her as they walked away. Cala waved back, her brain finally back into proper working order.
"Looks like someone's in love!" One of her eels teased, resulting in it being smacked back underwater.
"Oh hush you," Cala scolded.
This was much more beautiful and intoxicating than love.
