special delivery [cagney carnation]
Day One
You walked up the hill, a freshly packed package in hand. You were hoping to find someone to give you directions.. See, this was your first day delivering mail. You did not know who was who in this area, nor names to match with faces.
A flower patch cartoonily stood out to you, so you walked up to it.
A cute little carnation.. You crouched down, lips nervously twitching into a smile as you tried approaching it.
"Excuse me-"
He suddenly erupted into a large, thorny flower, with teeth as sharp as knives. He stood about 5 feet taller than you and was clearly showing signs of hostility.
"What?!"
You jumped in fear, letting out a small yell. You'd dropped your package and ran away, tripping over your own feet in the process. Which resulted in you rolling down the hill.
Cagney just watched as you unexpectedly fell down the hill. Maybe he should have taken a different approach...
Day eighteen
You'd still had bruises on your face and knees from you last fall. That package had never gotten delivered and you were scolded for it..
Though, you still didn't know the area. And you still needed help. You were reluctant in returning to the flower.. It couldn't be much worse this time around.
Marching back up the hill, less timid than before, you made your way over to the flower patch. "Excuse me, miss flower thing..?"
He popped up amongst the several other less lively plants. He looked a bit unpleased that it was you again, but you really couldn't help that.
"Did you just call me a miss..?"
"You're a guy..?"
He looked majorly offended by your words. Really? Couldn't you tell he was a guy? What a dummy..
"And you do deliveries without knowing the people in the area? Gee, never woulda guessed."
The comment was rather harsh. You felt tears brimming at your eyes. You were still new. You were getting the hang of things a bit, but that doesn't mean you were spot on with this sort of thing.
Lip quivering, and hands gripping the package, you turned from the rude flower. Your heart dropped to your stomach in shame. Maybe you weren't cut out for this job afterall... Maybe he was right.
You walked down the hill again, determined to find Mr. Kettle, the one the package belonged to this time around. If it took you hours, then so be it.
It took him a while to realize, but in the two times he had interacted with you, he had hurt you both mentally and physically.. So much for first impressions.
Day forty-six
In the time you had been apart of the newest delivery service, you had gotten to know everyone on the first Inkwell Isle! You perceived it as an accomplishment. In addition, you had become well acquainted with a few people, the cupbros, Hilda Berg, and Goopy le Grande.
All except for Cagney, who was the guy you were delivering to today. This was the one delivery you were dreading.. You had a grudge against this guy.
You hiked up the hill again, determined to get this delivery over with.
You stood at the flower patch, Cagney already having popped up to his regular height. Not monster sized, but not a petite flower either.
"Mister Cagney Carnation, I've got a delivery just for you! From Miss Honeybottom."
He squinted at you. You'd gotten an upgrade to your uniform. It looked.. No, it didn't look cute. He was trying to avoid that word as much as possible. Still, you had those same band-aids from the bruises he'd given a while back..
Taking the small box from your hands, he awkwardly sighed. "Thanks."
A silent nod towards him. You adjusted your hat, prepared to make your way down his hill again.
Your wrist was grabbed.
"Hey um.." The flowery male would not make eye contact with you. "Sorry. For the hill incident. And what I said last time." It sounded forced. But it was much better than not having an apology at all.
Your lips twitched into the sweetest of smiles. "I.. Forgive you. Thank you for the apology."
With a skip and a hop, you safely made your way down the hill, leaving Cagney with a sense of satisfaction.
Day eighty-nine
"HEY CAGNEY!"
He looked down to your small, pacing form, at the bottom of his hill. Why the heck were you shouting like a madman? Couldn't you just come uo and visit him as usual?
"What do you need jackass?!"
You laughed at him, now understanding his teasing sense of humor. "I hope you're having a good day today! I'm kind of late on deliveries!" You rushed over to the small car you rode in from isle to isle.
"Oh uh.." He wasn't used to this behavior.. It was too... too pleasant.
He blushed a bit, yelling back at you, "Finish your stupid deliveries! We'll talk later!"
"Kay!"
He shook his head, watching you drive off, almost into a lake, and then getting back on track again. What a goof you were.
Day one hundred and twenty
Up the hill you went, a routine by now, carrying a small box filled with who knows what inside.
Well.. You knew what, but you wouldn't say.
Cagney was there, as usual, sitting in his same spot with a smirk that practically mocked you as a delivery person. But then his look changed to one of confusion. You were no longer in uniform..?
"What's this? A new get-up? From you?" He teased. "Get outta town.. You're off work I'm guessing?" The flower crossed his arms.
You nodded with severe enthusiasm. You'd planned to spend today with Cagney, seeing as this was your only day off of work. "Somehow I've still got a delivery for you though." You handed him the box.
A question mark practically popped up over his head.
"Promise you won't open it till later though! It's kinda embarrassing.."
"I guess I can do that. Better not be some love letter or somethin'."
You lit up like a light, immediately shaking your head, flaring your hands. Gosh, why did he have to be like that? "It's not! I promise!" "Yeah yeah, whatever."
Day one hundred and sixty
It had been around six weeks since you had given him that package. And every time he saw you pass, he saw you in a new light, each angle being one he enjoyed further and further.
See, in that box was a simple letter. A letter in which you expressed how far you had come to your relationship with him, and how it had changed your life for the better. It made him emotional, and Cags may or may not have cried a bit.. But you didn't need to know that.
After your day at work today, you stopped by the small flower patch, where he laid every single time.
"Hey, Cags!" You greeted cheerfully. He perked up a bit. "Hey."
You two chatted for a while, the sun disappearing over the horizon quicker than you'd wanted it to.
You two had stopped talking briefly.
But then you spoke up at the same time.
"Hey-"
"Hey-"
You paused to laugh. He got overly embarrassed. You spoke up again. "You go first."
"No you."
"No you-"
"Dammit go first!"
"Okay okay!" You held your hands up in defence. You looked down. "That letter I gave you a while back... I um.. I didn't mean it Cagney."
He was heartbroken. At a loss for words. At times like this he reacted most through actions, but he waited to see what you would say next.
"I kinda meant more than that but.. hey, anxiety kills.."
He let out a grumble, crossing his arms. You made him feel too many emotions. He didn't like it. He wanted to be blunt with you. He knew what you wanted to say in that letter, and all he wanted was to retaliate over what you meant.
"I think.. I think-"
"I think I love you too, idiot." He spoke lowly. The blush on his face was as bright as ever, yours escalating quickly, soon matching.
"You mean it?"
"Well if I didn't I wouldn't have said it."
"Oh..." You snorted after a moment of silence.
"Well what n-"
You smushed your lips against his. It caught him ridiculously off guard, but he wasn't not going to pounce at the opportunity to kiss you. Seriously, this was all he'd been waiting for for a while now, and he was sure you had been too.
You two were too in the moment to truly confide in doing anything else.. It just kinda happened like that, and was over in a flash. Cagney couldn't look you in the eyes any more that night..
"I wasn't expecting to be the one getting the delivery tonight Cags.. I didn't think I was gonna get a full-blown packa-"
"Shut up." He laughed. He laughed. "I'm the one who got the special delivery, not you."
