Chapter 8- An Attempt Was Made

Third Person

KrakenKid blinked but let out a short laugh. "Really? I'm going near the palace?"

Cody nodded, then quickly corrected himself, realizing KrakenKid couldn't see that. "Yep! I can visit you everyday!"

KrakenKid paused but snickered in the end. "Have mercy on my soul... Well, penguin, I'm gonna get some sleep. Eventful day and all that. Do me a favor and don't watch me sleep."

"Will do!" He grinned and strolled away. The farther Cody got, the more he let his smile drop. Truth was, KrakenKid wasn't being moved for simple reasons.

PebbleTeen's words echoed in my head. "KrakenKid is being targeted. If we have a mole among us, they're going to try this again and we can't afford to lose him. Who knows what would happen if he gets into the wrong hands! Cody, we're going to need to move him close and he can't know that the bomb was meant to free him, understand? He's still a very dangerous man, whether he can see or not doesn't change that."

PebbleTeen told Cody to lie to him, and even though he hasn't had to directly lie, white lies felt the same way.

"This is the place!" Cody grinned as he lead the kraken inside.

He blinked and moved his head around. "Well it certainly looks amazing."

"I know right? I helped with the decor and designing where-HEY!" Cody finally caught onto his sarcasm and he burst out laughing. "Stop doing that!"

"How could you possibly forget I'm blind, twice? Fool you once, shame on me but fooling you twice? That's on you." He smirked. "Now give me a house tour, penguin."

The penguin's eyes rolled. "I don't think that's how the saying goes." He muttered and began to explain where everything was. Cody's thoughts were still consumed by the events of yesterday, but it finally stopped on one detail. He stopped dead in his tracks, causing KrakenKid to run right into him.

"Dude! I'm kinda trusting you to lead me around, mind not doing that?" He grumbled.

"...You called me Cody." His tone was quiet.

KrakenKid just blinked a couple times fast. "What was that?"

Cody! We gotta get out of here! GET EVERYONE OUT!"

Cody...

"Yesterday..." The king started to explain. "Yesterday, you said to me, "Cody! We gotta get out of here!" You said that to me!" Cody grinned.

KrakenKid didn't seem to get it, squinting his eyes even though he didn't need to. "Uh... Okay? Yeah, I said a lot of things, what so-"

"You used my first name." KrakenKid's words turned to nothing but a long 'S', prolonged by his slight panic setting in, now realizing he had no way of escaping it. Cody's body only filled with more excitement as he got more and more hints that he was right. "Oh! Oh, oh, oh! I knew it! You're getting comfortable with me!"

"No I'm not!" He protested a little too quickly. He nearly slapped himself when he realized his mistake. "I just figured it would catch your attention," he awkwardly fumbled to cross his arms. "That's all."

"Mmmhmm..." Cody hummed, skeptical but smiling like a maniac. "Riiiight. Keep telling yourself that. Whatever makes you sleep at night."

KrakenKid sighed and rubbed his sightless eyes. "You know what? I don't have to deal with this." He turned around, then tensed for a moment and half turned back. "Uh... Where's my bed again?"

"...Did you somehow forget your were blind?"

"I've been like this for like a week man! And my dreams don't make it any better!" KrakenKid blurted out, then covered his mouth in shock and silently cursed under his breath.

"Your... Dreams?" Cody echoed carefully. What was he talking about? "What dreams?"

KrakenKid sighed, shoulders slumping with defeat. "Take me to my bed first, then we can talk."

Cody nodded before taking his hand and leading him over to the bed. He had to give him a little nudge to tell him to sit down, which he did hesitantly before settling in. The kraken took in a long breath before he spoke. "I still dream in color. That I can see." He answered, looking away, but more out of habit than the actual need to avoid Cody's gaze. "And... It gets to me." He answered.

Cody frowned and patted him on the back. "I'm... I'm so sorry, man. I wish I could do more-"

"I know." KrakenKid cut him off. "I've heard this a million times before, so I know everything you're going to say. I get it, you didn't want this to happen and you feel responsible and all that."

They both sat in silence before Cody coughed to catch his attention. "So-uh- what do you dream about?"

KrakenKid was silent, but he slowly began to smile. "The good times mostly." He decided to leave out the nightmares he had, he didn't need Cody to get any more mushy than he already had. "Training with Cannibal, father-son time with Blooper, Darrel-... Darrel in general." He laughed. "No one in Atlantis could match his sass." He shifted around move, getting comfortable. "Sometimes I just dream about my everyday life. Going down to the arena to see the guys fight each other, making small and harmless bets on who will win, laughing with the guys and just... Being me."

Cody bit his lip in guilt and sighed. "And you don't get to do that, don't you?" KrakenKid shook his head.

"Waking up after a dream like that is the worst thing in the world." He fell back on the bed and "Stared" at the ceiling.

Cody sucked in a breath. "Well... I could set up a fight at our arena! I mean, Atlanteans normally fight monsters or robots or some sort of training dummies but I could convince them to fight each other with the right money! And we could try and match what-"

"It wouldn't be the same." He argued back. "Home is still home. No matter what you try to do, you can't match that, or replace it. Forget it." Cody's eyes looked down, but to his surprise, KrakenKid wasn't done. "But I appreciate the attempt."

Cody's gaze shot up. "Really?" KrakenKid nodded, getting Cody to smile. He nudged him. "See? You are beginning to get comfortable with me!"

He laughed. "Yeah, don't get your hopes up. You're still you, and we both know how I feel about you."

Cody shook his head, deciding to let it go. "I'll take what I can get."

CannibalCrab leaned against the wall, knowing he couldn't do anything to stop the scream of the arguments until they were done. He waited his turn until finally, Blooper stormed out of the room, fuming. CannibalCrab huffed and followed behind.

"Blooper."

"What?" He whipped around, glaring. "I already got chewed out by Darrel, what do you have to say?"

Cannibal looked him up and down before noting the concealed firearm. "Don't do anything reckless. We're already weak as it is, we can't afford to lose another important member."

Blooper groaned, tensing and trying not to yell. "Who says I'm going to do anything?" He challenged.

Cannibal gave a bored look. "That shotgun in your backpocket that you keep checking does." Blooper self consciously tried to cover it as he went on. "Trying to rescue your Dad on your own won't help anybody. You'll get caught, plus our sources say our last attempt not only put them on red alert, but made them move him."

Blooper paused before starting to walk away again. "Doesn't matter, I'm going to do this."

"Blooper-!"

He whipped around, yellow eyes flashing. "I can't leave him behind! He's always been there for me and now every time I wake up he's not there to tell me my nightmares aren't real or-" Blooper's words faltered and his gaze dropped to the floor. He stared at it for a moment before shaking his head firmly and looked back up, fire burning in his eyes. "I'm going after him."

He tried to move but Cannibal grabbed his arm and yanked him back. "Oh no you're not!" He gritted his teeth and blocked his path. "You're not leaving the house!"

"What are you, my Dad?"

"Well someone needs to be!" The general yelled. His words brought silence to the room.

It took a while, but eventually Blooper's fire died out and he huffed. "...What else am I supposed to do?"

CannibalCrab relaxed a little, but his question brought up a lot of questions. "I don't know, but we'll figure it out. We always do, don't we?" He chuckled and lightly grabbed his shoulder. "Plus, this is your Dad we're talking about. He can take care of himself."

Blooper nodded. "Right... I should probably go apologize to Darrel."

"Yeah, that guy holds a really bad grudge if you don't and he WILL screw you over in the worst way possible."
