Chapter 12- Possibilities
Third Person
Professor Pikalus didn't say anything when KrakenKid joined him. He wasn't sure what to say
Pikalus was huddled in the corner of the market, shock blanket wrapped around him- even though he protested he didn't need it- and stared at the ground. The kraken, with slight help of some of the guards, found his way over to Pikalus and plopped himself down.
He leaned up against the wall, took in a long breath before speaking. "You look like crap."
"You're blind, Kraken." Pikalus croaked out.
"Well then you sound like crap." He crossed his arms. "Or feel like crap. I can sense it, now that my sight is gone, my other sense improve, right?" The kraken swung his arm to hit Pikalus' face and rubbed it. Pikalus knew full well he meant to hit him on purpose. Heartfelt moment or not, KrakenKid didn't change in at least one aspect. "Mmm, see? My kraken senses tell me you feel like crap."
Pikalus shoved his arm away. "Stop touching my face!"
KrakenKid grinned, satisfied. "But, my point is, you should stop feeling that way."
"True words of wisdom. You should become a therapist."
"For someone who just got saved by me, you're awfully sassy." KrakenKid rolled his eyes, most likely for dramatic effect. "I'm doing my best here, I'm not exactly your best friend. That guy is somewhere over there." KrakenKid gesture wildly around. "I think. I heard him earlier, he could've moved- I'm getting off track."
Pikalus let a chuckle escape him. "Were you ever really on track in the first place?" KrakenKid didn't answer but smirked and after a moment, Pikalus coughed awkwardly. "I, uh... Thanks."
"For what? What did I just say about the sarcastic comments-"
Pikalus waved him off, then realized he couldn't actually see that. "No, no. I mean for making sure I didn't kill Cody and calming me down. You... You didn't have to do that." He finished lamely, then cleared his throat.
"Oh. It's not a problem." Krakenkid shrugged, though his fiddling tentacles betrayed how he was trying to appear calm. "Just kinda did it, y'know? Didn't think about it."
Pikalus could practically taste the lie but decided not to say anything. He at least owed him that. They were both silent for a moment, before a noise made them both freeze in place.
"Mrrow!"
Walking over from the middle of the market, the fluffy, calico cat trotted over to Pikalus and rubbed her face into his legs. He stared, dumbfounded and then managed to utter, "Fluffles?"
"Fluffles? You know that cat?" KrakenKid turned towards him, then nearly laughed when the feline started to cuddle up against the kraken too. "Whoa, hi there! Who's a good girl?" He cooed, blindly petting the cat and getting deep purrs.
"Yeah, she's mine." Pikalus answered his previous question, still unable to take his eyes off of her. "I swore she was still at home, how'd she get here? How'd she even know I was here?"
"Cat intuition." The Tide Changer said absentmindedly, then perked but and smirked. Before Pikalus could even ask what he was thinking of or much less worry what it was, the kraken picked up the cat and shoved her in his general direction, managing to plop her onto his lap. "Speaking of, this is the perfect cure! Have fun!"
"Wha- Kraken!" Pikalus couldn't stop him as Fluffles settled into his lap and Kraken got up, leaving him alone with her. Out of instinct, he started to pet her and felt a release of something dark inside of him when she purred.
----------------------------
Cody was directing the guards on different areas to prioritize when he got the call. Normally, he might ignore it for later but when he went to silence his phone, he saw who it was from.
Doctor Gray. The hospital. He couldn't stop himself from answering in a split second, holding a hand up to the guards to wait. "Yes, hello?"
"We might've found something that could work. Get KrakenKid down here."
Cody didn't wait a single moment, putting PebbleTeen in charge and getting the Tide Changer as fast as he could. He didn't bother for any transportation and just ran, leading him along. He quickly told Kraken the call he got, and noticed a shift in his mood. Almost more... Hopeful than before.
After all, that kind of call after so long could mean a possible solution.
Doctor Gray was waiting by the entrance when the two came in, and ushered them to her office. Once there, they all took a seat and she started to explain, going over her papers. "So, I've been reviewing the damage done to your brain that made you blind and comparing it to other cases we've had in the past. Unfortunately, our knowledge on the biology of krakens is... Lacking, so it's difficult to get a clear reading but... We think there might be a chance."
"What chance?" KrakenKid blurted out immediately. He now sat on the edge of his seat, listening intently and nodding for her to go along, even if he wasn't sure he was looking directly at her.
Doctor Gray cleared her throat, shifting through her notes. "Well, it's no guarantee, but there might be a type of surgery we can try performing. Since your occipital lobe is the damaged part, we can try going in and seeing what we can do to help. The surgery entail us to get into your brain but if we can restore some of the tissue using-"
"What would be the result?" KrakenKid interrupted, his voice urgent.
She blinked, but nodded. "If we are successful, it could restore your sight."
KrakenKid was dead silent for a moment before grinning broadly. "Do it."
"I haven't even told your the risks-"
"I don't care about the risks!" KrakenKid shook his head. "I want to see again, I don't care if it might kill me! Just- perform it!"
Logically, Cody should've been happy for him. He was- really, he was! But something about Kraken saying 'kill' put an icy grip on his heart and he couldn't help it. "Wait! What are the risks?"
KrakenKid growled. "Cody, I. Don't. Care."
"I just think we should think about this before just randomly-"
"You don't understand!" KrakenKid snapped at him. "I miss my sight, okay? I miss colors and shapes and seeing all the time and not having to be led around like some- some- dog! I dream in color and then I wake up to darkness and wish I could go back to sleep for the rest of my life. I'm never going to physically see my son's face ever again! Do you know what that does to you? To me?"
Cody turned quiet and eventually nodded at Doctor Gray. "Okay... Make preparations, get it in as soon as possible. Whatever it takes."
The doctor looked between them before nodding and leaving the room. The two just stayed there for a while, not saying a word.
---------
The day of the surgery ended up being within the same week. Three days later- much closer than Cody could handle, but there was one thing that held him together.
KrakenKid. He was more excited than a kid on Christmas. He buzzed with excitement and could hardly keep still during the wait time. It made Cody laugh, and forget what he learned.
Because as soon as he got the kraken back home, Cody went back and learned the dangers. Every possible one. He could accidentally damage another part of his brain, he could die, and then it came down to another part that Cody wasn't sure how to deal with.
The surgery could not work at all.
The thought of all that hope and energy getting cut down scared him more than he would've suspected.
And when the day came and he watched him go under, Cody didn't breathe for a moment. It was time for the waiting game, he could do nothing else but sit, and hope for the best.
Hours passed and after they were done, Doctor Gray came to him and showed him to the recovery room where KrakenKid was resting. He had woken up much earlier than expected and both of them heard the words at the same time.
"The surgery was a failure. Your sight hasn't healed like we hoped. I'm sorry."
Cody wished it was totally silent, but he could still hear the sounds of the hospital when he couldn't speak. The talking of workers, beeping from machines, and the worst of it was hearing someone laughing. Because while they had no idea of the gut wrenching feeling either of them were feeling, they could laugh. It made Cody feel envious, wishing he could feel happy too instead of receiving the news he did.
Strange that someone's world could be ending at the same time as someone else tells a joke.
The silence was only broke as KrakenKid started to get up, with Gray pushing him back down. "Sir, you still have an IV you need to keep in your arm and we need to monitor-!"
"I don't care. Get me out of here." KrakenKid hissed at her, then tried again.
"Sir!" Gray didn't budge, now signaling other workers for help.
"IT DIDN'T WORK SO JUST LET ME LEAVE!" He started to scream, and Cody's heart twisted into something he didn't recognize. He couldn't move- he wished he could.
"I'm sorry, Sir, but I can't let you do that." She insisted. When he kept moving, the other doctors helped hold him down while she slipped a needle into his arm. KrakenKid yelped in protest but soon, all fight drained away and he laid on the bed, staring at the ceiling blankly.
"He'll be fine." Gray told the speechless king. "Just a bit of medicine we use on more rowdy patients. Makes them a little out of their head, but it's harmless to their body."
Cody just nodded before he had to leave the room.
Cody slipped into the safety of the men's bathroom before he found himself bent over a sink. Hot tears streamed down his face, though he wasn't even sure why. Emotions filled his body, suffocating him into letting out a small sob. Cody's head spun and it was hard to breathe. He couldn't think- or do much of anything.
Why did it hurt so much? Cody kept asking himself but couldn't answer. Not in words at least. Only feelings. Feelings that were difficult to deal with and that Cody would push down to make sure they never saw the light of day. He lied to himself, saying they weren't there.
So instead, Cody blamed it on guilt and sympathy. Hearing KrakenKid scream and fight- it broke him in two. He just felt bad after everything that happened. That was all.
Cody only left when all evidence of his red, puffy eyes was gone. He wasn't sure how long he was in there, but when he came out, Rasmus was waiting, with his newest bodyguard behind him.
"Miss Gray told me what happened. Figured I'd come and see how you were doing." The rooster told him, eyes shining with empathy. "You were taking a while so I visited him. I'm sorry, Cody."
Cody gulped back another sob that threatened to break him and nodded. He was getting tired of hearing how sorry everyone was. "And?"
"My bodyguard was able to check on his vitals. Apparently she worked as a medic for quite some time." He nodded behind him.
Cody's eyes met with the blue eyed woman. "There weren't any irregularities. As long as he doesn't damage his head anytime soon, his recovery will go nicely." She told him, then frowned. "I'm sure it must be hard for you."
Cody bit back a snide reply of 'Oh, you think?' And just kept nodding. Talking was tiring him out, he just wanted to lay down.
But, then a single question shocked his systems.
"How long have you two been dating?"
"What?" The word comes out a wheeze as Cody can hardly even process it.
The hybrid snake blinks. "Wrong word? Okay, let's see... Been together? Bonded? Mated? Or-!"
"That's worse, stop!" Cody cut her off, unable to stop his face from heating up. "We're- we're not-! No! We're not like that! Why would you think that we- RASMUS!"
The snickering face is soon hidden as the councilor bites the sides of his cheeks to stop himself. He gives a 'I don't know, wasn't me' shrug as Cody returns his attention back to his guard.
"You're not? Weird, the way he talked about you sure made it sound like it."
"What'd he say about me?" Cody hates how he sounds like an excited teenager asking about their crush but can't take it back.
"Well, he kept mentioning you. Saying stuff like 'Where's that smelling penguin?' And 'He has the stupidest voice ever it's so stupid' and he just kept repeating that for a while. Kept slipping you into the conversation whenever he talked to anyone. Then he said something like, 'I miss him and his stupid voice, get him back here' and so I figured you two were mated or something. I've only heard the mated talk about their other half that much." The bodyguard explained.
Cody blinked fast before stuttering out. "Stop saying 'Mated'!" And bolted towards KrakenKid's room.
He pushed those deep dark feelings down again, further lying to himself.
—————
"Did I say something wrong?"
Rasmus bent over, laughing and shook his head. "No, you did a service to us all. Those two idiots have been tiptoeing around each other for weeks now, neither was going to say anything out loud."
He quieted down to a chuckle and started walking. "Let's leave those two alone for a while. They'll need another push later, but for now, let them be. Let's go see how One Eye is doing."
*******************
Reminder that this book did start out as a Caken book and while I'm not a fan anymore, I'll die before I backdown from what I planned.
Yeah so I literally was planning the book and thought of that end scene with Cody and Tanith and I had to add it because I love that trope and Rasmus is right. These two dumb idiots aren't gonna admit their feelings and if someone like Pikalus said it, they're gonna laugh it off as a joke. Tanith met them for less than an hour and says their dating, it gets to their heads.
Plus it's fun embarrassing these dorks with emotions.
Pikalus gets de-stressed by Kraken's sass and not treating him like a loose cannon, and of course, Fluffles.
Fluffles is all knowing. Fluffles could find you from across the world. Don't screw with Fluffles. Appease her with pets, or suffer her wrath.
sO ANYWAYS, I hope you guys liked this! It was fun to make so be sure to comment! Comments and reading don't take nearly as much time as making it and I'd really appreciate it! See ya!
