I felt the sting of the bullet before my mind registered that I had been shot. Happy lowered me back to the ground and I visibly winced as the weight made shockwaves of pain rocket throughout my leg. I cursed softly before I raised Virgo's key and chanted as I swiped it through the air. I was about to have her dig this guy an early grave but a spot of red presented itself on his forehead as he fell back limply, blood spurting from the wound on his head.
I stumbled back and hit a crate as I slid to the ground. I yanked my jacket off and pressed it to the wound. I looked over it slightly and rested my head back against the metal behind me. "Damn, another tank top ruined..." I sighed, starting to feel the warm and sticky fluid soaking into the jacket and overlapping tank top with my hand. I made a point to steady my breathing, taking slow breaths to keep myself calm.
"I'm sorry I couldn't get you out of the way quick enough Lushie." Happy sniffles beside me. I turned my head to him slightly and gave him a sad smile.
"It's alright Happy, honest. It was my fault really." My smile slipped into a frown as I spoke. "If only I hadn't been so damn reckless. I didn't even have any time to go find Natsu!" I exclaimed. I closed my eyes while I leaned back again, a wave a dizziness rolling over me.
"It's alright Luce." I hear a voice say. I squeaked in surprise, throwing my fist out to punch whoever spoke. I looked to see that it was Natsu as he caught my hand and raised an eyebrow at me.
"Sorry, you scared me." I pout, my cheeks puffing out a bit as I spoke. He laughed, letting go of my hand as he did so.
"Nah, it's alright!" He exclaimed before becoming serious again. "Can I look at your leg?" I froze at the question. I had hoped to just shrug it off and have him walk me to the car so I could get it looked at later. I slowly and reluctantly pull my hand from the injury.
Natsu pursed his lips before taking his jacket off and ripping some of it up. He pressed a bundle of the cloth to my seeping wound, making me wince in the process. "Sorry." He apologized before taking a long strip of cloth and tying the bundle to my leg tightly.
"Ow, ow, ow!" I seethed, my face scrunching up in pain as I took a sharp breath.
"Sorry, but it's gotta be tight." He explained before standing up and putting back on his ripped up jacket. I'd have to pay him back for that. "Come on, I'll give you a ride." He crouched down in front of me. I hesitated before shifting carefully, putting my arms around his neck, and he lifted me up. I barely was able to note his avoidance of my wound.
"I know, but it hurts." I huff, resting my chin on his shoulder. Happy was flying alongside us, silent. I could see his worried looks he was giving me and I just wanted to pull him into a hug and reassure him that none of this was his fault.
"I know, I know." I heard Natsu sigh, hurrying along down the rows of crates. "Just try not to fall asleep ok? You've lost a lot of blood." He murmurs. I nod my head slowly, already beginning to falling asleep. I knew it wasn't good but dizziness and waves of fatigue kept slamming into me with more force than the last.
By the time we got back to his car, he was running at a full sprint. "Natsu, is she going to be okay?" I barely heard Happy ask, flying into the backseat when Natsu opened the passenger side door to buckle me in. The makeshift bandage that Natsu had wrapped around my leg was already drenched, dripping even. I fought the urge to rip off the uncomfortable sticky material, knowing it was better for it to stay on.
"Yeah, she'll be alright little buddy. I promise." Natsu responded to Happy but everything sounded distant. I felt him reach over me to buckle me in before he shut the door and got into the drivers seat. My head was nodding and slipping but I would jolt myself awake at sudden noises or with the realization I was sleeping. Natsu started up the engine and backed up, turning quickly and heading back for the warehouse. I could tell he was driving carefully so I wouldn't be jostled but I winced at every small bump. The pain was getting worse and I was starting to panic a little, my head and thoughts going fuzzy. I felt a heavy wave a fatigue hit and I closed my eyes, feeling myself slump over slightly. I almost missed the sound of rain beginning to drum on the roof and glass of the car to create a lullaby of sorts, making it all the more tempting to drift off--which I did.
I felt someone shaking me slightly and I barely peeked my eyes open as I moaned softly in response. Who the hell would wake me up when I'm trying to sleep anyway? I whimpered when pain rocketed up my leg again and I heard a voice curse before apologizing. Water droplets began soaking my hair and skin, the cold contact making me shiver.
"Great, cold rain that's just what we needed! Fuck.." The voice spewed angrily and I heard a familiar door slamming open.
"Wendy!" The voice I now registered to be Natsu's yelled. A softer one I couldn't quite pick up responded and I felt my limp body shift as Natsu carried me up the stairs. It wasn't long before I blacked out, giving up on my fight against sleep. I was completely exhausted and my head had begun pounding relentlessly. I wanted to curl up and just make it all stop, the pain was bearable but I hated being down.
Hush now my darling don't make a peep,
Your mother wants you to fall fast asleep.
May your dreams take you far away,
And in these dreams is where I'll stay.
Please now child close your eyes,
I promise this won't be my final goodbye.
My secret is for you to keep,
so please my baby don't you weep.
Please just promise me to fall asl--eep...
I jolted awake. I shot up from my pillow, immediately regretting my movement as I yelped in pain--the familiar lullaby momentarily forgotten. My thigh was wrapped tightly and I could see a small spot of blood had appeared on the white bandage. Natsu was in the room within seconds the sound of my cries even got past my lips.
"Lucy why the hell are you up?!" He exclaimed before he nearly ran over to me, placing his hands on my shoulders as he gently pushed me back down. I sighed and held my head.
"I heard...a song...was someone singing?" I question him without realizing I had tears on the edges of my eyes, and the distant pained look they held.
"The real question is, why where you crying?" Natsu leans over me slightly and I turn my head away, wiping at the discovered tears.
"In my sleep..." I said with a sigh and close my eyes, "I heard the lullaby my mother sang to me right before she was murdered." I murmur with a grimace, not from physical pain, but from the tugging of sadness--my throat forming a knot in response. I never spoke of my mom, not to anyone. Yet here I was, telling my target of all people about her. But I felt comfortable with him knowing. He didn't seem like a bad person...so why was the MPD after him and the gang?
I shook myself out of my thoughts when a soft sigh came from my partner. I look at him again and his eyes were shadowed slightly. Worry crossed into my features but within seconds, any trace of sadness had disappeared. "Natsu? What's wrong?" I ask with hesitance clear in my voice.
"Who the hell killed your mother?" Natsu asked in a low voice. My eyes widening before I shook my head slowly.
"I don't know..." I lie, "every lead went cold." I mutter bitterly. The leads hadn't gone cold, they just never existed. The case started and stopped with my mothers dead body found clutching me, haunched over to hide me with a knife in her back. I could never forget the face of her killer...how was someone ever supposed to forget something like that?
I was removed from my own thoughts again when I felt two warm arms surround me. I stiffen for a moment, but eventually relax when I realize it was only Natsu. I rest my forehead on his shoulder. When Natsu released me he didn't look at me, instead he turned for the door only gruffly saying "I'll get Wendy to look at your wound." I stared after him wondering what was with the sudden shift...again...
That was when a smaller girl with long pretty blue hair poked her head in. She smiled brightly as she made her way to my side. I looked at her slightly baffled at how young she looked. She couldn't have been much older than fourteen or sixteen, and to be that young in a gang? I mean it wasn't that young but still. What was with Fairy Tail..? It didn't seem to be that bad of a place, why did Mavis want it brought down?
"Hi Lucy! I'm Wendy, the resident medic!" She grinned and then went right to work examining the bandage before removing it. I bit my lip nervously as I saw the condition of the flesh and muscle. The flesh was bright red and tender, new stitches making it look worse. I inwardly cursed and cringed as she put antibiotics around the wound to keep gangrene from setting in. "We removed the bullet while you were asleep. You should be able to walk again since I stitched it up. But," she looked at me and met my gaze, "don't push yourself. I already told Natsu of your limitations. Don't expect jobs that demand a lot of you physically for a little while." I nod and she rewraps my leg before she headed out and to the room next door--most likely Juvia's.
"How is Juvia doing?" I ask Natsu who had leaned against the wall by the door. He had been quiet the whole time Wendy was in the room, and I noticed he avoided looking at me. I wonder if he was blaming himself for me being shot. I didn't blame him, it was my fault for being so reckless anyways. But at least I wasn't dead, I have Happy to thank for that.
"She's okay, but her recovery is going slower than we want. I'm looking forward to finding Jude and giving him what he deserves for messing with Fairy Tail..." I saw pure rage flash in his eyes as he spoke. He fell silent as he seemed to be thinking about something. I shivered at the name he mentioned, Jude. My mind wandered back to the paper I had seen and shredded back when I was chasing after Juvia's shooter. He must have dealt a hand in it.
"What does Jude have to do with all...this?" I gesture around lamely. I couldn't help that I was still drained of most of my energy, not quite recovered enough from losing a good amount of blood myself.
"We were assigned a job to find Jude Heartfilia and take him out. Word is that he is trying to find and stop his daughter. Rumor has it she joined the MPD to personally bring him down herself." As Natsu spoke, and I felt all the hairs on my skin stand up and I repress a shiver. Dad was looking for me? He knew I was out to stop him? How had he managed to figure it out? And what means was he willing to use to find and catch me?
"Hey, Luce," Natsu snaps his fingers in front of my nose and I realize I had zoned out. "Are you okay?" He questioned and I wasn't sure if he was referring to my health, or the whole Jude situation. I just numbly nod my head, not wanting to risk my voice betraying me. Natsu looks at me, obviously unconvinced as his eyebrow raised slightly.
"Yes," I sigh, "I'm perfectly okay." I give him a sweet smile. In reality though, I wasn't okay. I was pretty far from it. I knew what was coming, and I didn't like the looks of it.
"Mavis, I hope you saw this coming." I mutter into my phone, back in my apartment to grab a change of clothes. Natsu was waiting outside and I rushed to make the call to the department.
"Of course I did. This doesn't change your assignment; I need Fairy Tail brought in." Her voice was calm and I wondered how long she had known about my father.
"Why does Fairy Tail need to be taken out?" I question in a small voice.
"Fairy Tail and I...we have some unfinished business." The receiver clicks and I set my phone back in the drawer with a shaky hand before closing and locking it. I sigh and run my hands through my messy hair. Conflict began to bubble up inside me as I made my way out to Natsu who was leaned against his car. Was I working for Fairy Tail? Or the MPD?
