~•*Lucy*•~
Natsu quickly ran out the door, picking me up and throwing me over his shoulder before sprinting towards the car.
"What are you doing?!" I screeched as I pressed my hands on his back as I tried to steady myself.
"Running away! You're not allowed to run yet so I'm carrying you!" He exclaimed, reaching for his keys in his pocket to unlock the car. I saw a flash of his gun in the waist band of his pants and reached down to draw it out. I scanned it for any safety and upon finding none, I leveled the weapon and fired. I was sure I nailed at least two of those bastards.
"Shit, Lucy, why'd you do that?! We weren't supposed to do anything." Natsu set me down, opening the back door, tossing me in before getting into the drivers seat.
"They had theirs drawn first." I quickly argued. He grunted in response, turning on the car and peeling out. The tires squealed and the rubber burned as he drove away. He sighed, looking out the window with a creased brow.
I was cursing softly to myself, fumbling with the seat belt as I nursed my head. I looked back and saw a car weaving through traffic after us. "Natsu, they're following us." He looked at his review mirror, swearing when he saw a pair of headlights gaining on us and the flash and booming of gun fire. He pushed the pedal further, the car lurching and roaring as we picked up speed.
"Hold on Luce, and you might wanna buckle up for safety." Natsu grabbed the gears and quickly shifted them, pressing the engine a bit more. I snapped the buckle in place and squeaked as the glass chipped from a bullet. Natsu maneuvered around cars but our pursuers kept up, in fact they where gaining.
"Natsu they're still on our tail." I picked up the gun that had fallen beside me in the seat. I turn and roll down the window.
"Don't even think about it Lucy." Natsu's sharp tone made me freeze on the spot. I shook him off after a moment though.
"How else do you propose we lose them then? This isn't working!" I exclaim. He looked back at me for a split second, and in that second we locked eyes.
"You shouldn't blindly shoot a gun." His cold look made it even harder to hold in my retort about being professionally trained to shoot.
"Just trust me, I won't let anything happen." I say evenly. He doesn't respond and I quickly roll down the window, and before he could get a word in, I reach my hand out and level the gun as I aim for one of their tires. I miss on the first shot but I land the second. I shoot a third bullet at a second tire but by now they are firing back and I quickly pull my hand in. The car swerves and the gun clatters from my hand and out of reach. So much for that.
I look up as Natsu makes a sharp turn at an intersection and I catch myself before I hit the side of the car. I hear the engine growl as he pushes the speed higher while weaving around traffic and brushing past red lights. He swung a hard left and I saw skid marks on the road as the car on our tail attempted to follow but in a sloppier form. We veer off onto a side street and when we get back on the highway, they are beside us. They shoot out the windows on my side and I barely manage to duck down. I caught sight of the gun and barely grasped it as I jerked upright again.
"Give it up Heartfilia!" The driver yells and I feel my heart stop. I flick the gun up and without hesitation I pull the trigger and the driver slumps forward with a bullet burrowed into his skull. The inside of his windshield was quickly painted red by the blood that spurted from the hole.
"I need to talk with Gajeel and Jellal..." I murmur absentmindedly as I watch the second guy fumble with the wheel as the car slowed and collided with cars behind it. But just as I thought we where safe, the bloodied passenger shoved the dead driver out of his door and slammed the gas as he landed in the drivers side. I don't know how he could see through the windshield though, it wasn't as if he could just turn on the wipers.
"Well fuck, this is about to get interesting..." Natsu grit his teeth and shifted the gears again, throwing the car into the next lane and I barely had a chance to blink before we where going through the China Town portion of the city.
"This is so cliche..." I groan and Natsu shoots a glance at me from the driver's seat.
"Do you have a better idea?" His voice came out in a growl and I quickly shook my head. He looked like he was growing angrier, his grip on the wheel turning his knuckles white.
People dove out of the way and we ran through boxes, carts and stands. I cringed at the thought of all the damage we where making, but I pushed that aside as I remembered that we where running for our lives--a few crates of food could bare to be sacrificed for that. I faced forward again as we veered onto multiple side streets, Natsu's expertise in escaping this way not surprising me. We gradually lost our pursuers before Natsu pulled off the road. He parked the car and got out, coming to the back and opening the door and reaching in to take out his gun--throwing it in a nearby dumpster.
"Get out, we're taking the bus." he said without looking at me. I carefully got out and closed the door behind me.
"Third car this month," I heard him mutter under his breath, making me pause in surprise. He had gone through three cars in only a month?
I quickly shook myself of my thoughts and followed him through town. We walked quite a few blocks from where we ditched the car when I spotted a bus station. As I began to walk towards it, he grabbed my arm gently and pulled me into an old looking diner.
I was about to ask why we where here my stomach grumbled softly; that's when I remembered that we hadn't had a chance to eat yet. We sat down in a booth and Natsu's avoidance of my gaze and his icy aura made my blood run cold. Had he heard the driver earlier when he called me by my real name? I chewed my lip nervously as a waiter handed us menus. With my appetite gone, I ordered only some fries and a small shake--nothing healthy but it would fill me for the time being.
We ate in a deafening silence, my nerves spiking the longer it went on. I tried to speak, but it was as if my words where simply caught in my throat. How do I explain everything and smooth this over? Hell, there is no way to smooth this over. The more I thought about it, the worse of a feeling I got. I didn't want to tell him, I didn't want him to cast me off and refuse to even speak to me again. I decided my best plan of action would be to try and keep the pieces of my charade together a bit longer, prolong the inevitable a little more. Maybe he hadn't even heard it, I could be totally over reacting. I breathed a small sigh before glancing up at Natsu, pushing my empty glass and plate aside.
"I think we should head for the bus," I murmur and slowly stand. Natsu slaps a twenty on the table and heads for the door with me not far behind him. We walk to the bus station and it isn't long until a bus is rolling up to the curb. Natsu pays for our bus fare and we take a seat in the back. I'm next to the window, trapped between Natsu and the side of the bus. It wasn't that he was even looking at me anyway.
"Hey, uh...Natsu, is everything alright?" I ask quietly, almost timid. His silence and stony attitude was beginning to ware on me.
"Define alright." He mutters coldly. I hold my arm and sigh softly.
"What's wrong?" I manage to keep my voice from faltering.
"Everything is, Lucy. I don't know what to fucking do." He grumbles while aggresively running his hands through his hair and I twist my hands nervously.
"If it's about me shooting at them back at the party--" I find Natsu's hand muffling the noise coming from my mouth.
"That isn't the biggest problem on my plate right now." He looks me dead in the eye and I see nothing but anger and hurt in his eyes. My stomach dropped like a rock. Had I done that? Had I been the one to put that there?
"Then tell me...what's the problem?" I was more hesitant with my question.
"I can't right now, I don't trust anything or anyone." He ground out the last part and I froze, startled. He did hear what the driver had called me. He must have...
"Look, Natsu about.." Again I am cut off from speaking, but this time it is by him speaking.
"Save it, I don't want to hear it. Besides this isn't the best place for that." Natsu silences me. I drop my head and let my hair fall around my face, a sense of dread and panic setting in. Despair began creeping up upon me as well and I could only stare blankly out at the passing buildings. To add to the situation it began to rain gently, the droplets and their little trails blurring the outside world--almost as if they where beginning to block me out as well. But even as my body was still my mind was awhirl; thoughts bombarded me at every second and most of them where about Natsu...and how to amend things with him.
The bus came to a stop and a couple people shuffled off. It wasn't long before Natsu was getting to his feet so I followed. When we got off and the bus had driven away, I felt something being placed over my head. I grabbed it before I registered what it actually was--Natsu's suit jacket.
I looked over at him to see him waiting for me to start walking. I moved my feet quickly even through my body was weighed down by my dread. We approached our quickly and the moment I had crossed into the lobby I tugged his jacket off and held it out to him. He took it as he passed by me to the elevator.
I stood in to the elevator on the opposite side as him, leaning on the wall and staring at the floor. I knew he was mad at me, but I just didn't know what for. It was gnawing at me and it was soon turning to guilt. What was it that he had heard? Was it my mumbling or was it our pursuer? Or maybe it was both. I brought my hand up and began biting at my thumb nail.
When the elevator jerked to a stop with an indicating ding, I shoved myself off the wall and walked beside Natsu to our room. He pulled the keycard from one of his pockets, his face stoic and slid it into the handle before the light turned green and allowing our entry.
The second I was in the room, I grabbed a change of clothes from my duffel bag and bolted to the bathroom. I undressed and reached my hand behind the white curtain, remembeing when I had come in earlier to pee. I had seen Natsu's naked silhouette in my rush and my face heated up. But that was before everything was potentially ruined. The thought sobered my emotions and I moved into the shower--my thoughts calming in the ten minutes.
I towel dried my body before putting my pajama shorts and bed flannel on. I debated whether I should dry my hair and opted to just let it air dry. I wasn't in the mood in the blow dry, and if it came out kinky when I woke up, well it's nothing a pony tail can fix.
I grabbed my toiletries from the counter before I exited the bathroom, Natu's bare shoulder brushing past me as he walked to the bathroom.
I dumped my things into my duffel bag, but when I turned around, I was greeted with the sight of our only bed. Realization soon joined me when remembered I would have to share with Natsu. I stomped towards the cursed bed, plopping down without covering myself. I was tired and I just wanted to get some sleep.
I was halfway to my destination of sleep when I felt the bed shifting, and when I groggily turned my head over, I saw Natu lying on the very edge of the bed--the furthest away he could could get for me. I felt my heart clench with pain at the prospect before I promptly fell into a troubled sleep.
