Station
A/N: Eyy!!! I'm back in time for the holiday season!!! Let's hope I get this done before it ends! Four more chapters to go!! Anywho enjoy!
"Would that be all Mr. Mathews?" the plump police woman asked, looking above her computer.
Her pink lipstick seemed to be the only source of brightness in this gloomy police station. Other officers walk around the precinct. Wandering eyes casting behind to catch a glimpse of the once missing person. A hand entwined with his own. Malik gave a supporting nudge to his side that sent warmth around his partner's chest.
"Yes, that would be all.", Rhys says. The lady nods and continues to click away.
The doors to the office open revealing the chief, Chief Barnes. The man looked chiseled and mature. His hair is gray with age and stress.
"Came right in time. Follow me to my office please gentlemen.", he says in a gruff voice.
Walking through the precinct, Rhys can feel the intense eyes sticking to his skin. Mummers and office gossip circle his ears like a mosquito. The faint mention of vultures with cameras crowding outside the station annoyed Rhys. They are the last people he wants to see.
Upon entering the chief's office, Rhys wanted to scream. Not one of sadness or anger but one of unadulterated joy. Rhys doesn't know if he ran to him or he ran to him but all he felt was two arms wrapped around him tightly.
"Oh Rhys. My dear Rhys. ", Harvey says rubbing his hands through his nephew's hair.
Rhys looked up and smiled. "I'm so happy you are okay. Last time I saw you you were-"
"Let's not study that. I'm just so glad you are here and safe.", Harvey smiled.
Barnes clears his throat trying not to place too much of a damper on the cheerful mood. "Very touching, yes but we have some matters to discuss."
"Yes of course." Harvey nodded and they all took a seat.
"Rhys Mathews am I correct?", Barnes began.
Rhys gave a quick nod.
"Rhys…may I remind you that lying to a police officer is a federal crime?", he reminds him.
Rhys' eyebrows furrowed. "Sorry…after being kidnapped by a police officer, I may be a bit hesitant."
The officer looks at Rhys blankly. "Full government name please. "
"Rhys Theodore Hanover"
"Not so hard right?"
'Prick…' Rhys thought, folding his arms up to his chest.
"2 and a half years ago you were reported missing and then dead. However, you were then reported missing under a false name. Now that would put any department into a frenzy." Officer Barnes says.
"Skip to the part you really want to talk about." Harvey says with an unimpressed look on his face
Barnes grumbled something under his breath. "Right. We called Rhys' parents about this development and their first response was your number."
'Just great, they know I'm alive.' Rhys thought, rolling his eyes.
Harvey fixed his shoulders. "So what?"
Officer Barnes' face relaxed " Let's say I was curious and when I saw your info and the parents info I just had to test out a theory."
'Theory? What are you, Bill Nye?'
"Turns out, Uncle Harvey has a bit of a record here. When he was about twenty two, he was charged with unlicensed driving and reckless driving but of course your brother got you out of that predicament. "
A slim file was produced from Officer Barnes desk and slid across the table to Harvey. Harvey looked away from the file like it was the sun. Rhys reached his hand across, swiping the file.
Upon opening the file, Rhys noticed the mugshot.
'Fuck, we that similar?", Rhys thought. Fluffy red hair tossed back, a smug look plastered on his face like he was almost prideful. His face was a bit bloodied and torn. It would be like a mirror if I wasn't for those eyes. Blue piercing eyes that seemed far more devious than the subtle calming ones Rhys sees next to him.
"What does this have to do with anything?"
"I was getting to that. When we searched him we found the usual stuff you would expect. Gum, wallet, pocket knife and usual rich boy pocket stuff. " Officer Barnes takes a breath and focuses his eyes on the older man. "All were expected except a little white box of prenatal vitamins with your prescription."
'What?', Rhys thinks. He turns to his uncle. "You were pregnant before?"
Harvey rubs at his knuckles and clears his perfectly fine throat. "Yes I was… It was a while back."
"I never knew anyone in my family would have - you are like me?", Rhys questions.
Harvey gives a slow nod. "The gene to be able to carry is genetic. Someone in the family must have it in order for it to be passed on." Harvey looks down. "Closer the more probable."
"Your birthdate is June 2nd 2001 am I correct?" Officer Barnes asked.
"No? My birthday is June 4th 2001.", he replied.
Officer Barnes cocks an eyebrow. "That is seemingly true. I mean it's on all your records. Even on your birth certificate. That would undoubtedly be true, if the certificate wasn't forged."
The room grew cold. Brown eyes look towards the Officer, then to the file and then finally to blue.
"Really?" Rhys finally says in a hushed tone.
Harvey glances away but ultimately loses to the guilt that gripped his heart. He looks over to Rhys' pleading face and finally says.
"Yeah…really."
Rhys' mouth grows dry. "All this time you were…and you never said…"
"I never said that because I never could." Harvey said. "You had everything you ever asked for. You had a mother who adored you-"
"Not as much as you adore me…", Rhys snapped.
Whatever defense that Harvey had fell through. Both found father and child stare at each at a standstill. That was until the creek of a door signaled the trouble rising to its peak height. A large man towered over them all. His elongated shadow casted gloom onto all in the room. Tight hat crammed on his head that rests on an equally thick neck. Tailored suits are no longer tailored. Followed closely behind was his trophy. Blonde, blue eyed and full of woe.Harvey stands and faces when no other could move.
"Wipe your eyes brother, it is unsightly to see you cry.", the large man says.
Harvey sneers.
"In your fucking cunt Reginald."
Question: Why do you think Malik is doing being in this awkward situation?
