Task 1 1/2

This task required us to choose one of the Gamemakers offered and create an arena on our own. I chose Arcadius Wethermen, Head Of Dome and Cornucopia Design.

Arcadius was up and dragging the unfortunate colleague beside him towards the computers before Jaede had finished saying, "Dismissed."

Clearly though, his enthusiasm was not very infectious. Incipio, who was the unfortunate colleague, was staring at Arcadius without much joy, probably figuring that he was a weirdo. Arcadius was too excited to care.

"So," he began, "Any ideas?"

Incipio, who looked rather depressed under all the layers of black he was wearing, refused to answer him. Thankfully though, they had reached the computers. Incipio seemed relieved, at least that's what Arcadius assumed, because, honestly, Incipio always appeared unhappy. As soon as Arcadius turned to walk to his computer, Incipio quickly took off, with nary a goodbye, eyes constantly on the floor.

Grinning, Arcadius whistled a jaunty tune and continued on his way to his computer.

He settled down in front of his computer, his quick mind whirring.

This is the perfect opportunity, my last year here and this comes up! Unbelievable! I'll be leaving with a bang! Now, what to do. Hmmm... Perhaps a jungle. But that would be too common, unless...

Arcadius chuckled to himself, knowing exactly what to do. He would draw up the cornucopia, his speciality, last, giving him more time to come up with something absolutely amazing.

Placing a fart cushion underneath the seat of the recently vacated chair beside him, he set to work.

Go big, or go home.

Arcadius first drew up a regular jungle, with a grassy clearing around the cornucopia and a stone wall to keep tributes away from the force field. It would be extremely hot and humid during the day and nearly freezing cold at night. Then, he enlarged it so that a regular blade of grass would be at least 5 feet high with the trees being a 100 feet tall and the streams and ponds 50 feet across and a 100 feet deep.

Animals in the jungle would be just as big, if not bigger. Most small animals like squirrels and monkeys would be at least as tall as a grown man, with razor sharp teeth that could inject poison into the victim of its bite and either kill them instantly or cause them to be paralysed for at least a day depending on how strong the person's immune system was.

Insects such as mosquitoes and the like would not be enlarged but would cause infections with their stings instead. Their stings would not kill but could cause a person's tongue to swell up, causing discomfort.

Plants like Venus Flytraps would be able to gobble up a regular human if they walked into the traps. There would also be spots in the arena with quicksand that could drown a person before they could scream. These places would be disguised as regular mud and a person could be sucked in without any warning.

As for the streams and ponds, they would contain flying fishes with sharp teeth that could cause severe infections if a tribute was bitten. These fishes could be eaten but would be extremely difficult to catch and when caught, could stay alive on ground for around an hour. The water in the streams and ponds would be drinkable only if cooked. When cooked, the poison in them would evaporate. Left uncooked, they could poison a tribute immediately, often having fatal results.

The jungle would have only one waterfall. That waterfall would be acidic and contact with it could cause severe rashes and burns. The water there could melt any substance, even metal and if a tribute was thrown in, they would suffer and die a painful death.

Behind the waterfall, there would be a safe place for shelter, but it could only be reached by a single, dangerous path. Falling from that path would cause one to fall directly into the waterfall. The shelter would only allow one tribute in at a time. If there was a tribute in there, other tributes would not be able to enter.

Only berries would be available in the jungle. Large bushes would contain these berries. Each berry was as large as the palm of your hand and some were deadly. A basic knowledge of plants would be required to tell which were edible.

Arcadius blinked at his glowing screen, pleased with what he had created. And now, at last, the cornucopia, his speciality. This would be the best he had ever created. He had been savouring this idea for a year now, and had nearly perfected it. Now was his chance to use it.

Stretching, Arcadius grinned, showing a flash of white, before he resumed his work.

The cornucopia would be a large, abandoned circus tent, at odds with the dense jungle he had created. The tributes would be brought up into the tent.

Inside the tent, there would be the usual food and water, with an array of weapons. There would be guns, bow and arrows, swords, knives, whips and axes. There would be four of each weapons, exactly twenty-four in total. The food and water would be refilled daily. There would also be caged circus animals in the tent. These animals would include, tigers, bears, panthers and lions.

For a few hours each day, the tent would be inescapable, trapping at least one tribute that had attempted to retrieve the food and water in the tent inside it. Then, the animals would be let out. These animals would be starving and would devour the unfortunate tribute. The hours during which the tent would close would change daily.

Arcadius was absolutely delighted with the arena he had created but something was missing, something deadly that would hunt the tributes down. And so, Arcadius was thinking hard once again.

What about, hmm... What about having a tiny, stealthy gorilla that would be programmed to track the tributes down, one that would only enlarge when it had found its intended target. Wouldn't that be useful? The tiny gorilla would be able to squeeze through tiny spaces and travel rapidly. Also, it would be adorable.

Arcadius laughed then. And adorable, deadly gorilla? Absolutely, unbelievably amusing, and perfect for the arena.

That cute gorilla would enlarge at the touch of a tribute and grow very quickly till it would be gigantic. Then, it would proceed to eat the tributes. Just imagine the looks of horror on the tribute's faces.

With another short laugh, Arcadius began creating that animal on the screen, ignoring the slight twinge of guilt that he felt.

It's just a game, he reminded himself. This is just another work of art, a very beautiful one at that. Anyway, it's my last year here. He convinced himself, appealing to the artist in him.

A loud fart sounded beside him. Pushing the matter to the back of his mind, Arcadius turned to his disgruntled colleague and winked, trying not to explode with laughter.

With chuckles escaping out of him, he turned back to his screen and glanced through his wonderful creation once more before clicking on the Submit button.
