Chapter 12
To Be or Not To Be

(The Night Before); 

"You and your brother are closing up tonight." Mr. Fryman calls out from the back of the Beach Citywalk Fries. 

The young adult with curly fry like hair freezes after making up a whole anime battle in his head. Mainly using the ketchup and mustard bottles, "Awww! Dad, seriously?!" 

The tall and thick built man opens the side door, an apron and visor in hand. "Maybe don't scare off customers with your shenanigans." 

Ronaldo whines and wipes the counter in despair. 

A smaller human known as Peedee, the little brother snickers and pushing two trash cans. "I told you. Never try to convince those tourists that starfish have mind control powers."

Ronaldo huffs and has difficulty dragging the two trash cans across the back door, "I'll admit. It was far fetched, but there are always endless conspiracies and mysteries to solve in the unknown. Especially the universe." Ronaldo grunts and shoved the door open, "THERE IS A TALE THAT HAS NEVER BEEN TOLD!"

The darkness crept up on the walls except for the area around the giant garbage bin. There were only a few noises coming from Funland, semeong a bit creepy when there was hardly any soul once closing time started. 

"Ha! Heya! Any evil that hides in darkness, the Great Ronaldo shall end you!" The young adult kicks and pretends to shoot energy from his hands. 

"Nice moves, Kid. Wouldn't it be more efficient with real powers?" 

Ronaldo jumps and turns around to see someone leaning against the wall. The light cast a shadow over their face and half of their body. "Don't scare me like that, Mysterious Person." He continues to dump out the trash and paying very little attention to them. 

They casually take steps to end up beside Ronaldo. "To be or not to be. That is the question." 

Ronaldo raises a brow at them and steps away, laughing nervously and holding up his hands. "Alright. I know what that means. Oh man! You're going to kill me?! I can't die! I haven't gotten to 1 million followers yet on my blog!" He falls to his knees dramatically and holds out a hand, "Be quick and tell my Ohime Sama….I love her." 

A hand pinches the bridge of their nose at the young human's pathetic actions in the situation. "That's not what I meant." They walk up to Ronaldo and cross their arms. "I have something that would make your priness love you even more. I would say she might be impressed if you had powers like in the anime. Orrrr…..wouldn't it be better if you were a Crystal Gem. Strong, summon your weapons,  and have unique abilities that humans can't have." 

Ronaldo frowns and tsked, "I wish! But that ain't possible. I've tried to be a Crystal Gem a long time ago. Besides, I don't have a gem and my body is organic." 

They hum with a smirk, "Well, Steven Universe has an organic body and he's a Crystal Gem." 

"But I don't have a gem." 

"Do you want a gem?" 

"Yes! I'm tired of being pathetic Ronaldo." Ronaldo says sadly. 

They stare at him unsure, especially in his state, but….this was an experiment. An experiment to see if organic life can still handle the power of a gem. Especially a human. "I can make that happen. I've heard other humans talk about a Gemsona. What is yours, Ronaldo?" 

"Well-"

A finger is held up to silence him, "Why not see for yourself? Think about your Gemsona." They tap the colorful gem on their belt as it glows to place a clear gemstone in their hand. In a sudden movement, they place the gem onto Ronaldo's chest. 

During the whole ordeal, a Gem friend of Peedee's went to head inside the fry building when her one eye sees everything. A nephrite. 

A white light engulfs Ronaldo and he floats up. The gem changes color and takes the form of a Bloodstone.

Once the gem choses that form, the light disappears and Ronaldo lands face first on the ground. 

"Ow." He sits up and hums, "I don't feel any dif- Oh. My. GEMSTONE! I HAVE A GEMSTONE!" Ronaldo punches in front of him in excitement with stars in his eyes at the bloodstone gem embedded in his chest, "I'm Bloodstone! Yes! Oh! Oh! Let me-"

His hand reaches to grab something from his gem as it glows off a moment, "HA!" He swings, but in his palm was the hilt of a red katana. "Aw. It's broken." Until a button on the bottom catches Ronaldo's attention and he presses it. 

A bright red light stretches out to form an energy blade, its glow radiating with power. 

Ronaldo could barely comprehend this. Very speechless and a fanboy squeal rising out of his mouth. "A lightsaber kaTANA!!!!" He swings and the blade slices through the garbage bin in a clean cut. "You have no idea- I just- Thank- huh?" Ronaldo was alone. "Hello? Mysterious Stranger?" 

Nothing. The night was quiet once again. 

The young adult human, half gem, puts the weapon away and covers his gemstone by buttoning up his shirt to the collar. "I have to keep this a secret." The breeze dramatically blows his hair as he looks up to the sky. "My destiny has come." He grins widely and runs inside, "I have to tell Steven and the Crystal Gems!"

The Nephrite gulps at what she just saw and backs away. "I-I-I can't believe. I-I….I need to tell Peridot. Steven Universe." She tried to keep from hyperventilating. Not knowing that was possible to do to a human. It wasn't natural. The gem runs past a late open clothing store, not seeing the very human/gem inside with his human girlfriend and two Spinels. 

From around the corner, the gem continued to run when suddenly she felt her whole form get poofed. The circular light green gem with dark green contour lines is bubbled quickly and hovers in the air. 

A hand holds the bubble and they're face scrunches in distaste before sending it off to Homeworld. "Can't have any of you gem scumbs telling anyone….yet." They twirl the weapon on their finger and put it away in their gem which glows in many colors. As they begin to walk away, they could feel a pair of eyes watching from the dark and they glare in that direction. Unfortunately, they couldn't hurt any humans, but this particular one was being to get on their nerves. 

It didn't take them long to meet up with a mutated gem soldier that seemed to have a portable warp pad just big enough for them to step on and warp back to the Diamond Throne Room.

Blue Pearl had been keeping Pink Pearl's mind off from everything and Yellow Pearl has been working at keeping things running as usual. The Pearls all look over as the figure steps off the Warp. 

They walk up to the Pearl, paying no mind to Pink or Blue. They just took over the screen and Yellow steps away. Many old experiment notes pop up and all marked with the same signature at the bottom. The notes were pictures of old paper that humans use. Some held burnt edges. 

There were signatures that held held the same name, but the ink was faded in certain spots.

Dr. --u---ar---

"Are you sure you know what you're doing?" Yellow Pearl questioned. She had read over everything and there were things she never knew existed. Even knowing where the very first gems came from.

"It's worked before, though I just need to see if it still works on the humans. Don't you dare question me anymore. It's my business and you Gems won't be here long once I have the last diamond." They roll their eyes at the pearl and flip through the notes.

Yellow Pearl restraints at doing anything too rational and pulls up the screen of Earth. "Could you say least tried it on the humans in the zoo?" 

They stop and everything goes deathly silent. Another screen pops up to show surveillance of Pink Diamond's Human Zoo. "They're too….pure and innocent. I can't ruin their paradise."  They swipe the screen away and check the Earth time on another. "Continue with what you were doing. I'll be in the lab and remember to alert me when anything happens." 

When they leave with two mutant soldiers, Pink Pearl kept taking glances at the Warp until Blue Pearl places a hand on her shoulder. 

"Not now. What until she leaves." 

Pink Pearl nearly tears up. 'But it might be too late to get help.'

(Present Time);

Spinel exhales and relaxes onto the grass, her eyes closed as the sun shines down on her body. She takes a big bite of the strawberry donut. 

The lunch between, you, Spinel, and Nelly had been set on the hill just a few yards away from the lighthouse. 

Nelly, during the time, kept going from the top of the hill then rolling down until she rolled into the crater from something bigger that must've stuck into the ground. She laughs and finally stops to grab a sandwich. An almond butter and jelly sandwich. 

"How are you allergic to food?" Spinel asked once Nelly refused to take a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. 

"MILDLY allergic to peanuts. I mean I can have it, just not too much and I also like almonds better than peanuts. Especially chocolate covered almonds." Nelly chomps down on her sandwich and hums happily. 

Spinel is still confused about it, "That doesn't explain WHY a gem is allergic to human food." 

Nelly shrugs and stays quiet, enjoying her food and seeming not wanting to talk about it. 

"She'll tell you when she's ready, Spinel." You say softly and sigh faintly, "It's….something very hard to talk about, especially for someone like Nelly." You take a glance at Spinel and chuckle. 

Spinel tilts her head at you, "Do I have something on my face?" 

"Sorta." You reach over brush your thumb across the corner of her mouth, wiping away the pink frosting. "I think you missed your mouth when you were enjoying that donut." You joke.

The gem's face blossoms a very deep pink color and quickly hides her face in her pigtails. 'WHAT IS THIS?! How can I be embarrassed! I think that's humans call it.' She hears your laugh grow louder and Spinel feels her face grow hotter, "Stop laughing!" 

You couldn't help it and continue, especially after Spinel turn away in a pout. "Aw! Come on, Spinel. I'm not making fun of you or anything, it's just too cute to see you so flustered." 

Spinel has a stubborn glare off in the distance and her hair hangs back like a pouting puppy. 

Nelly is grinning at the moment you two were having, then starts plucking flowers. 

For the pink hearted gem, Spinel still couldn't believe that she's feeling all these new and amazing emotions and feelings from just being on Earth for a short time. Slowly, her blush fades and her magenta eyes stare out at the scenery from this high hill. 

It captured everything. From the small city, the endless blue ocean and skies, and the vast green lands that made up the planet. 'Now I see why she loved this place.' Spinel thought and look at you from the corner of her eyes. 'Especially the humans. They're amazing. Unique….breathtaking in a way. I may not understand sometimes, but I'm willing to learn.' 

From under her shirt, her gem glows softly and Spinel smiles peacefully. 

"Boop!" 

Something encircles the top of Spinel's head after being dropped softly. A flower crown of blue and white flowers sat there and Nelly skips over to you, placing another on your head, but this held blue and yellow.

You and Spinel chuckle at her thoughtful gift.

Spinel couldn't be ill-mannered to the smaller gem for very long. Certain times, like now. Her hands stretch across the hill, grabbing pink and white flowers before she pats the spot in front of her. "Alright, you Little Buttercup." 

Nelly immediately sits in front of Spinel like an excited toddler. 

You watch with a soft expression as Spinel picks up Nelly and turns her around to start braiding the flowers around the smaller gem's heart shaped pigtails. Almost like flower scrunchies. In your mind, you thought you could hear a familiar ukulele playing and voice singing far off as a distant echo.

"If only I could know what’s on your mind. If only I could tell you what’s on mine." Her gloved fingers strumming the instrument with ease. "If only I could show you how I feel."

Spinel finishes her work and crosses her arms proudly. Nelly stands up and giggles happily while trying to look at the masterpiece. 

"If only you would look my way just this once. If only you would listen to my heart."

You turn away with a frown and at that same moment Spinel had looked at you with a smile, only to frown as well at your slouched position. 

"If only you could see the love in my eyes. If Only you would stay and be with me." She scoots closer and playfully nudges your shoulder. 

Spinel scoots cautiously towards you and waves a hand at your glazed expression. 

"I’ve never ever feel this way before and now I want to see you more. Oh Darling, would you take me by the hand-" Her song cuts off by a hand grasping your own.

"(Y/n)." 

You snap out of it and realize Spinel is kneeling in front of you with worry. Her hands holding yours in a gentle squeeze. 

"Are you okay?" 

Your mood flips and you grin in reassurance, "Yeah. I'm okay, Spinel." You happen to meet Nelly's concerned stare and her eyes held a knowing look, until you see something heading at you three from the direction of Little Homeworld. "Spinel!" 

Spinel whips around from the panic in your voice and she grabs you and Nelly, springing out of the way as a loud crash came from the spot you guys were sitting. Dust flew around in a heavy curtain. 

You cough at that and cover your mouth with your shirt. 

"SERIOUSLY?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DIDN'T KNOW HE COULD PACK THAT STRONG OF A PUNCH?!" Ruby's voice shouts in angry frustration from the dust cloud. "That's it! I am going to show him a Ruby!" 

The dust clears and Spinel sees Garnet must have unfused as the small ruby gem pushes back imaginary sleeves. The blue gem, Sapphire pulls her back and they fuse back into Garnet. 

"Garnet? Oh gee, are you and the other two alright?" Spinel rushes over, leaving you with Nelly. 

"I'm fine." Garnet groans and fixes her visor. "We need your help to restraint this human before he hurts anyone, especially Steven and the others."

Spinel's eyes widen and she nods her head, changing her clothes to her fighting attire. "Then let's go." Before Spinel could take off, you stop her by grabbing her wrist. 

"Spinel, wait. Whoever knocked Garnet to unfuse must be extremely dangerous. Just let Steven handle it, I'm sure he can do it." You were very concerned about Spinel heading into this kind of danger. 

Spinel gently pulls your hand away to hold it, "I need to go. I promise I'll be right back." Without a second thought, her hand slips from yours and she leaves with Garnet, shooting themselves toward Little Homeworld. 

You feel an anxious feeling rising in your chest and you roughly run your hands through your hair. 

"I need to go, but I promise, I will be back." Her voice echoes along with fading jingles of her footsteps.

Nelly hated seeing you like this and she knew it was going to get a lot worse if she didn't do anything to help. "Lion!" She calls out. Even she was just as scared as you were for Spinel's well-being.
