Brooklyn's Playlist

The title says it all. Why am I doing this you may ask? Well, you should know by now I get this random ideas that sometimes may or may not make sense. And to be honest, this is one of my more....sane random moment. I dunno, this one makes the MOST sense out of all the others I've gone on. Albert VS. Colton is another, but also beside the point. I would've done Feister's first, but Brooklyn's is somehow more rounded, so we're starting with that. We all know I heavily use music for inspiration, and sometimes I what I make up there's no song for it, and then months later, a new one comes out. Or I'll end up finding one that oddly explains what I'm trying to get at.

I will also be putting the videos to the songs in here incase you want to listen to (or know what I'm referring too) without having to go through the hassle to search for it. Little insider, when it comes to playlists most of the time I like to think of them as a story. Meaning the way I sort them is like chapters, or sections. Basically similar songs stay close together and as it goes along, the theme slowly changes

1: Who Says, By Selena Gomez.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

How much expiation does this one really need? It goes without saying that Brooklyn has a LOT of self doubt, and she doesn't see herself as someone great. So in a way this is her "pick me up" song in a way.

2: Love Myself, By Hailee Steinfeld.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Again, another self explanatory song. But in the same breath, it's also different. It's not so much a "pick me up", but more of a..."I'm done with you and will focus on me from now on". Plus it's also one Brooklyn can let her hair down and dance around when nobody else is around. The line that sticks out is "Pictures in my mind on replay".  She thinks/remembers a lot of things. And like the line, it "replays" in her mind often and it's hard to shake off.

3: Fight Song, By Rachel Platten.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

This one needs no commentary.

4: Popular Song, By MIKA ft. Ariana Grande.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

(side fun fact to theater nerds, this song samples Popular from Wicked). Ok *claps hands* basically what this one is about (or rather how I see it) is about being yourself and not really following the flow of trends/not fitting in with the popular crowd. Which is Brooklyn through and through. She tires to go with the flow, but it doesn't feel natural to her.

5: Like Nobody's Around, By Big Time Rush.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

(*clears throat* Just putting it out there....I'm an OG BTR fan). Now while this video isn't the whole song, it's just too creative of a video to pass up. *push's young fangirl Crystal away*

I like to think the title is to the point. But again it's basically being yourself, letting lose and all that fun stuff. Yet, there's a twist to this....after giving it a few listens I realized this is really more of Albert getting Brooklyn nudging her to be herself. I dunno, I really see him trying to get her to dance around the kitchen when no one else is around to see it cause he knows how shy she is.

6: Better When I'm Dancing, By Meghan Trainor.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

I am realizing more and more just how obvious some of these titles are. Anyways, while the last song was more of Albert trying to get Brooklyn to dance, this one is not only her freeing herself, but also Brooklyn teaching Albert partner work. Or at least him jokily pulling her in and she ends up taking it seriously without knowing it.

7: 24/7, By Big Time Rush.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

In case it wasn't clear, Brooklyn can be fun and playful when she's comfortable enough, which is why some of these past few songs are very dancey. Also yes...more Albert, but it also kinda shows how he's sort of rubbing off on her-ish.

8: Dance With Me Tonight, By Olly Murs.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

This has a very 50-ish vibes in my opinion. And again, Brooklyn teaching Albert how to properly dance. When I hear this I imagine it's like three in the morning, the only light on is the one above the sink and he's kind of twirling and swinging her around while she tells him what to do/reminds him not to drop her. Bow that I really think about it I should add that to my "write list"....Anyways, yeah. Very catchy.

9: Do you Believe in Magic, By Aly & AJ.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Now this is the song Brooklyn wakes up to everyday/gets ready too. This one shows her more playful, youthful song. It has a hint of her dream-ish side. But again, most of that hasn't been shown just yet. I plan on it....soon....

10: Boys Like You, By Anna Clendering.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

......and I now welcome you to what Crystal's strongest writing genre is...sad, gut punching heartbreak. (to which I apologize for...I don't know HOW that happened). Sadly this is about Colton and that toxic "relationship" she went through. Most of the story with this is mostly in the lines so let's take a look at that.

So when you hold my hand, do you wanna hold my heart?
When you say you want me, is it all of me or just one part?
So when you hold my hand, do you wanna hold my heart?
When you say you want me

To me, out of everything else this is by far that has the strongest connection to Brooklyn. If you know you know. Ummm....yeah.

11: According to You, By Elise Lieberth.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

So....this one is more about Colton and Albert. It's that back and forth in Brooklyn's mind. And when it clicks for her, does she fully realize better off she's with Albert. Who is someone she never imagined she'd be with. In canon time it's more about the social status, but for modern AU it's the personality. If anything, please give this one a listen. You won't be disappointed.

12: Psycho, By Red Velvet.

Now, while this is a k-pop song, I'll be using the English demo as a reference cause it's easier and it's the one I sing the most cause it's in English.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Getting to the bottom of it, it's about a toxic relationship, but the English Demo and Red Velvet's version in meaning is somewhat different...at least that's what I've seen in the comments. But seeing as I can't figure out the meaning for the life of me, we're using the demo meaning as well. So here's the line that'll explain everything.

You got me feeling like a psycho, psycho
Got me chasin' shots of NyQuil, NyQuil
Without you got me dizzy and upset
Got me so obsessed with you
Look what you started I'm psycho, you're heartless

Like a psycho (psycho), psycho (psycho)
Got me chasin' shots of NyQuil (NyQuil), NyQuil (NyQuil)
Without you got me dizzy and upset
Got me so obsessed with you
Look what you started
Hey now I'll be okay

Ya know...cause Colton made Brooklyn think she was the one who was crazy and insane, making her think she was the reason why they weren't working out when it really was him. But to me it's the very last line/the outro, which is "Hey know I'll be ok". and that's so true to Brooklyn. She's always trying to look on the bright side and tell herself things will be ok.

13: 1 Step Forward and 3 Steps Back, By Olivia Rodrigo.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Oh boy, there's a lot to uncover here. And by that I mean the lines that stick out the most. This one is more about the back and forth she had with Colton. How when it felt like it was going well it ended up going backwards five seconds later. I'll highlight the ones that hold the most meaning...even though everything I copied in here speaks volumes.

All I did was speak normally
Somehow I still struck a nerve

Never doubted myself so much
Like, am I pretty? Am I fun, boy?
I hate that I give you power over that kind of stuff

'Cause it's always one step forward and three steps back
I'm the love of your life until I make you mad
It's always one step forward and three steps back
Do you love me, want me, hate me? Boy, I don't understand
No, I don't understand

And maybe in some masochistic way
I kinda find it all exciting
Like, which lover will I get today?
Will you walk me to the door or send me home cryin'?

No, it's back and forth, did I say something wrong?
It's back and forth, goin' over everything I said
It's back and forth, did I do something wrong?
It's back and forth, maybe this is all your fault

Instead it's one step forward and three steps back
And I'd leave you, but the roller coaster is all I've ever had

Brooklyn isn't just a very in the head person, she also kind goes along with people tell her to do in a way. Like she doesn't really follow societies standers, it's more of her being well behaved, a rule follower. Kind of a perfect little robot who stays out of trouble.

14: Die From a Broken Heart, By Maddie and Tae.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

When I tell you the first time listening to this hit me like a flipping train, I'm not lying...like I said I take inspo from songs. Sometimes knowingly and sometimes not knowingly. In this instances, it was the second one. Honest. Yeah so if you haven't heard this one, this is another I recommend listening to.

Line time.

How does he sleep at night?
Mama, the nerve of this guy
To leave me so easy
Am I gonna be alright?
I wanna kick myself for falling so hard
Mama, can you die from a broken heart?

And just promise that you won't tell him everything
And keep that pistol in the drawer
Mama, please don't say
I'm gonna laugh about this someday
You didn't see the way he drove away

Was it ever really real
If he don't feel like I feel?

But...technically speaking...Brooklyn's mom didn't know what she went through. How I see it is Brooklyn telling Feister what happened and asking her not to tell Mush or umm...he'd flip and then march on over to the other city without any thought whatsoever and go soak this Colton character for hurting his sister.

15: Sour Strawberry, By Caroline Manning.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Heheheh....double meaning-ish. Get it? Cause Albert is a redhead....but technically speaking this is about Colton. It's a figure of speech, which we all know I love. So it oddly worked out even though it's about a guy who isn't so great...

You look so sweet
But boy, you fooled me
I guess I got another sour strawberry
I built you up
Inside my head
But then you let me down with the words you said (bye)

You look good on the outside
Then I take first my bite
What'd I get myself into?

You look so sweet
But boy, you fooled me
I guess I got another sour strawberry
I built you up
Inside my head
But then you let me down with the words you saidLike, "blah, blah, blah, blah"
And, "nah, nah, nah, nah"
I'm not gonna miss you, baby
Now I can see
That you fooled me
I bit into another sour strawberry

16: Shout Out to My Ex, By Little Mix.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

I don't think this one needs any explanation. Though I will say the line that sticks out the most is "Not sure I loved you anyway" which is true. Brooklyn was always fifty-fifty with Colton. She may have thought she did at one point....because he kind of maybe sort of tricked her into. But when she was finally over him for the last time. Brooklyn was absolutely D O N E.

17: Damn You're Such A, By Hailee Steninfeld.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Is this one really a shocker? The funny thing is, one of the original karaoke night ideas was for Brooklyn to do this one by herself, cause it's not only quick, but she'd also get blinded by such rage she wouldn't realize what she was doing. And all the boys would all be like "What Da -" *confused face and maybe even a little fear* while Feister would have a proud sister moment. Anyways....the main line for this one is

... You keep calling, you keep calling
Saying that you want it back
All my loving, all my loving
But you can't, you can't
You keep trying, you keep trying
With that sweet talk on your tongue
But I'm not buying, I'm not buying
I can't, I can't

... You can take your lies to your next girlfriend
'Cause I don't want to hear it anymore
And if you're all that's left when the whole world ends
No, I still don't want to hear it anymore

18: Ugly Heart, By G.R.L.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

And....here's where some of the healing sort of begins. To say the least, as much as a jerk Colton is, he's one of the good looking boys in the school. I know people will probably hate that, but...it proves that not everything is what it seems to be. So it's kind of her admitting, ok, you're good looking but you're also an awful person.

Key lyrics.

And I wonder does it blow your mind
That I'm leaving you far behind
I wonder does it stop your heart to know
You're not my sunshine, anymore

Okay you're pretty
Your face is a work of art
Your smile could light up New York City after dark
Okay you're Coverboy pretty
Stamped with a beauty mark
But it's such a pity a boy so pretty
With an ugly heart

19: Criminal, By Lauren Carnahan.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Ok umm.....this one is sort of harder to explain, so take a listen and hopefully you'll understand why this is in here. AS catchy as it is, the meaning is actually kind of sad. Basically the best way I can describe it is an innocent girl falling for a heartbreaker who has a new girl every week (give or take).

20: What Kind of Girl, By Cimorelli.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Hehehhehe....Yo Nutcracker, are you surprised by this? Cause if you are then...you shouldn't be. *takes deep breath to clam the inner fangirl*. Ok, this one is 50% Brooklyn and 50% Feister, so let's dive into Brooklyn's half and as we go along, you'll see why this one was such a huge inspiration.

Your friend told me you're cool with being a thing or whatever
But baby you are gonna have to do much better
Cause I'm not like these other girls that you won't remember
I'm not gonna wait here forever

Cause I aim for the bullseye and I don't miss
I blew out the candles and I got my wish
But I, I didn't think you'd turn out like this
You say that you like me, you think I'm so fine
But if you want me you're gonna have to try
Cause I'm getting so bored
Like what kind of girl do you take me for?

If you want me, show me, love me, know me
Don't just think I'll keep this going
I'm sweet like sugar but I'm cold as ice
I'll be gone like the summertime, you better think twice

To quote a comment I said to nutcracker. Cause ya know it was her birthday when this book started and she somewhat liked him and when they got together he TURNED OUT TO BE A BUTT! Don't get me started on the bridge, this is already long enough.

Buuuut I'LL BE GONE LIKE THE SUMMER TIME YOU BETTER THINK TWICE!

YES SHE'S SERIOUS!

Why that one is so important is simple. It was summer time when they finally ended things and then suddenly, it was fall, she was in Manhattan and if you need more context just go reread Something Old & New in Brooklyn's Bridges.

21: Problem, By Ariana Grande

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

No commentary or context needed. This one literally speaks for itself.

22: Clean, By Taylor Swift.

(No. I didn't do that on purpose....cause she has a song called 22....)

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Anyways! About healing after a toxic relationship and getting to breath for the first time. Another point this is one big metaphor/word plays, and we all know how much I love that.

Rain came pouring down
When I was drowning, that's when I could finally breathe
And by morning

Gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean

23: Queens Don't, By RaeLynn.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Now I would give you guys key lyrics, but the whole song is Brooklyn through and through. So again, this one is another I recommend listening to. How I see this, she may not have much, but still pushes through, will only let people letting in who are worth it, and will go about life with a smile no matter how many curve balls live throws at her.

24: Strong, By Jordyn Taylor.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

As awful as things were with Colton, because of him Brooklyn somehow became stronger. That's it.

25: Hide Away, By Daya.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

It's obvious Brooklyn is a hopeless romantic. And she does want to find somebody who loves her, but it's a lot easier said than done seeing as the world is full of guys who aren't that great. All she really wants is for someone to understand her. Though her mind is a complicated maze and she doesn't think there'll be anyone who will get through it.

26: Begin Again, By Taylor Swift.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

HEAR ME OUT!! Girl gets out of bad relationship and is ready to start dating again-ish. But is still hesitant/worried the new guy she's going out with will be like her ex. And just putting it out there...I didn't hear this song until I somewhat figured out all the odds and ends. But the lyric that's just SO Albert is...."And you throw your head back laughing like a little kid" There isn't a single person in the world who can tell me otherwise!!

But it doesn't stop there. Here's Brooklyn's lyric. "I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did, I've been spending the last eight months, thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end, but on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again."

Alblyn: And we walked down the block to my car and I almost brought him up, but you start to talk about the movies that your family watches.

And that my friends, is how Highway Heart came to be. At least....I think it was. Listen, I take a lotta inspo from songs, sometimes one song can layer over different stories. Bare with me.

27: Guys Like You, By Taylor Acorn.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

You know, the actual meaning of this might be different to how I see it. But it's in this spot anyways cause certain parts reminds me of how Brooklyn sorta sees Albert. And remember how it's sort of hinted how she's "attracted to the face pace type of relationship" and...not really the "bad boy" type, just...rough around the edges. Ya know the type you know you shouldn't go for but do anyways(?)

Snapback and faded blue jeans
Bet you think you're cool
Guys like you are too afraid to really say how they feel
And those shoes cost more than my rent did
Ain't that the truth
And I sometimes laugh at guys like you

But guys like you
Yeah, your confidence is magic
Your smile is problematic
Got me falling, boy it's tragic
I guess it's true how we'll never understand when
We say we need a man but who do we run to?
Guys like you
(Oh, no, you got it all wrong)
(You say that you'll call but you just don't)
(And you're out with the boys and I wait on my phone)
(Oh why I like guys like you?)

And guys like you, yeah they like to act so damn tough
But when it comes to falling in love
They just can't get it right
Girls like me lose sleep at night

28: Call Me Maybe, By Carly Rae Jepsen.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Yeah...I've got zero explanation for this one. It's kinda random, but yeah.

29: Boom Clap, By Charli XCX

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Again, I don't know what to say about this one, it just somehow. kind of weirdly fits.

You're picture-perfect blue
Sunbathing under the moon
Stars shining as your bones illuminate
First kiss just like a drug
Under your influence
You take me over, you're the magic in my veins
This must be love

30: Teenage Dream By Katy Perry.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

I see Albert as someone who is care free and just kinda does what he wants without any thought whatsoever. Living on the wild side if you will. Brooklyn is your typical good girl who follows the rules, but when she meets him and starts falling for him she sort of gets dragged into that care free part of life....and ends up loving the rush of it all. Not because she's freed from rule following, but because she knows Albert wouldn't let anything bad happen to her.

Also....

You think I'm pretty without any makeup on
You think I'm funny when I tell the punch line wrong
I know you get me, so I let my walls come down, down

*sighs*

31: Red Flavor, By Red Velvet.

BARE WITH ME!! Now again, this is k-pop but I'll be putting English covers in here. Well two actually. You'll see why. The first one the translation is better. At least I prefer the words. But the second, music wise, sounds like the actual song. Just so you guys can get a feel for it. Plus...k-pop is sort of known for dances with their songs so yeah I can see Brooklyn jamming out to this. Secretly.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Do you guys understand why this is in here? Red? And there's mention of sweets/candy (Brooklyn has a sweet tooth). This one is hard to explain cause I listen to the original version more than English covers. But there is a bit of English in the original, the lyric that sticks out is "falling for each other, nineteen". Neither of them are nineteen when they met, but you get it.

32: Bright, By Echo Smith.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

As mentioned before, Brooklyn is a very in the head person, and can get a bit dreamy at times. It hasn't been shown...yet, but I'm hoping it will be sometime.

33: Sparks Fly, By Taylor Swift.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Welcome to the song that gave me the biggest inspo. There's a lot to unpack here. But some of the meaning I took from here is the whole rush of a new relationship. One that's with somebody you know you shouldn't fall for but kinda do anyways and it ends up being something wonderful.

Key lyrics.

The way you move is like a full on rainstorm
And I'm a house of cards
You're the kind of reckless that should send me running
But I kinda know that I won't get far

Drop everything now
Meet me in the pouring rain
Kiss me on the sidewalk
Take away the pain
'Cause I see, sparks fly, whenever you smile

Get me with those green eyes, baby
As the lights go down
Gimme something that'll haunt me whenever you're not around
'Cause I see, sparks fly, when you smile

My mind forgets to remind me, your a bad idea
You touch me once and it's really something
You find I'm even better than you, imagined I would be
I'm on my guard for the rest of the world
But with you I know its no good
And I could wait patiently
But I really wish you would

And I'm captivated by you baby
Like a fireworks show

We've reached the end of another random moment brought to you by my brain. Hope this helps you guys see Brooklyn in some new light, or at least understand her more. I promise I will do Feister's soon (you have no idea how deprived I am from her) but her playlist isn't as rounded as I'd like it to be even though her playlist has the same amount of songs Brooklyn's does. Dunno why but yeah. See ya soon!
