Chapter 9
Curt had been wandering the streets for nearly an hour without any luck of finding the man in black that Colton had seen the previous night. No one seemed to know who he was or where he had gone. It was not too surprising though. The streets were riddled with chaos. Buildings were destroyed, debris littered the streets, and the sound of mourning could be heard everywhere.
Curt was contemplating where to check next when he heard a distressed cry that sounded something like "Kweeeeeh". Curt listened again and heard the cry coming from a side alley. He thought to himself that the cry sounded like a chocobo — a large bird cousin of the ostrich that was often domesticated and kept as a pet or used for labor or transportation much like a horse. Curt cautiously walked down the alley and turned a corner to find a yellow chocobo trapped under a beam that had probably fallen as a result of the monsters' night attack. Curt quickly rushed over and carefully lifted the beam off of the crying bird. Freed, the chocobo slowly rose and looked at Curt. The bird moved closer to Curt and then softly chirped a more cheerful sounding "Kweh". Curt gently patted the chocobo on the head and noticed a collar around the chocobo's neck with a tag that read: "Grizzly's Stable House". Curt remembered seeing that building earlier during his search.
"Ok, friend, let's get you home, huh?" Curt offered.
"Kweh!" came the chocobo's reply as it cocked its head and looked knowingly at Curt.
Curt led the chocobo back to the stable house, which was only about ten minutes away. As they walked, the chocobo nuzzled Curt a few times, clearly grateful for his help. Finally, they arrived at Grizzly's Stable House to find a man clearing debris in front of the building. The man looked up and grinned.
"I see you found my chocobo," the man said to Curt.
"Yes, sir. He was trapped under a beam not far from here. I don't think he's too badly injured," Curt noted.
"Well, amidst all this nonsense, at least this is one good piece of news," the man said with some sarcasm. "Let me give you something for your help."
The man walked over to Curt, handed him five gil, and then led the chocobo away without even giving Curt time to say thanks. As the man and the chocobo rounded the corner of the building, Curt saw the chocobo look back at him and chirp "Kweh!" Curt quickly waved and then turned to continue his search.
Another hour went by with still no success, and Curt finally decided to return to the inn. As he walked back, he passed Grizzly's Stable House and paused for a brief moment to smile as he thought of the chocobo. Curt's happy memory was startled by that same distressed "Kweeeeeh" cry he had heard earlier. Curt walked around to the stable and saw the man — whom he now presumed to be Grizzly himself — kick the chocobo in an attempt to get him to move.
"Hey, what do you think you're doing, mister!" Curt yelled angrily.
The man swung around and faced Curt. "Boy, I should be asking you that question! You better get off my property!"
"That's no way to treat your chocobo! Especially after all it's been through!" Curt returned.
The man walked closer to Curt. "I said you better get off my property!"
"I'm not leaving without him," Curt said stoically as he pointed to the chocobo.
"And how do you propose to accomplish that?" the man sneered.
"I'll give you 100 gil for him or you can have something a little more special to remember him by," Curt said sarcastically as he patted his sword.
The man flashed an angry look at Curt, stole a quick glance back at the chocobo, and then said, "Fine...he's yours for 100 gil. Now get outta my sight!"
Curt handed the man 100 gil and then called to the chocobo. The bird walked cautiously past his old owner and stood next to Curt. Curt smiled, patted his new avian friend, and then turned and led the chocobo away.
