Chapter 10
"Paul, do you think Curt's ok?" Autumn asked.
"I suppose so. He must not be having much luck though seeing as he's been gone for over two hours," Paul replied as he lifted a crate of supplies into the wagon.
Autumn walked over to the nu and began to feed it a carrot. Paul entered the inn and reemerged with another crate a few moments later. He loaded the crate onto the wagon and then walked around to join Autumn.
"Well, that's the last of the supplies. We're all set to go as soon as Curt gets back. He'd better hurry if we're gonna make much progress today. I don't really feel much like spending another night here in Deloam." There was a mix of sadness and frustration in Paul's voice.
"I'm sorry about what happened last night, Paul. If you don't mind me asking, were you and Buddy close?" Autumn asked.
"Yeah...Buddy, Curt, and I basically grew up together," Paul answered.
Autumn saw a tear fall from Paul's eye, and she could only bring herself to smile sadly before she had to turn her attention back to the nu in order to hold back tears of her own. However, the sad silence was quickly broken by a familiar voice.
"Hey, you two! All set?" Curt asked as he jogged up with the chocobo in tow.
"It's about time! Any luck finding that guy?" Paul questioned.
"No. Not a single lead." Curt kicked a rock down the street.
"Hey, Curt, who's your cute friend?" Autumn chuckled as she walked over and began to pet the chocobo.
Curt proceeded to tell Autumn and Paul the story of how he found and bought the chocobo. As he related his tale, he could not help musing to himself that finding the chocobo had been a nice stroke of luck because it was clear that Autumn and the chocobo had quickly taken a liking to one another.
"So can we get a move on now?" Paul chided after Curt finished his story.
"Ok, ok. Let's go. We're heading to Rainbow Falls next. That's where we'll find the first myrrh tree. It should only be about two days' ride to the northeast. Thanks for loading all the supplies, Paul." Curt put his arm around Paul's shoulder and said softly, "For Buddy, Colton, and Brighton."
Paul nodded and climbed atop the wagon seat. Curt quickly joined him, and Autumn hopped into the back. Paul flicked the reins, and the nu started off with a slight grunt. Autumn gave a cheerful whistle, and the chocobo settled into a light trot next to the wagon and let out a cheery "Kweh!"
