Not successful. Part 48

Two weeks later and after numerous applications, Louise opened her emails.   She stared at the first reply from one of the companies that she applied for a job.  "Thank you for your interest in our company, but we regret to inform you that your application was not successful."

She stared at the screen as her throat was tightening and tears started to form at the back of her eyes.  What am I going to do?  She asked herself a thousand times.  Her phone rang.

"Here is another company that is in need of an accountant."  Clint said and after she wrote down the details he asked: "How are you keeping up?"  She could not answer and tears were flooding her cheeks.  He was so caring and popped in about every second night to either cheer her up or bring her the details of employers that might be interested in her skills.

"Hi Louise, don't give up, I'll see you in an hour. Don't make supper, I'll bring sausages and bread rolls, then we can do a barbeque.  It looks as if you need some loving tender care."

She nodded, then she realized that he could not see her and replied tearfully: "It will be nice."

She made herself a cup of coffee to steel herself to check her emails again.  Another three "Not successful," messages appeared on the screen.  She lowered her head in her hands and started crying uncontrollably.  What am I going to do?

She felt a small hand on her arm: "Don't cry mom, I will pray for you.  You will get a job."

"Thank you, sweetie, I am just worried that we might lose our home."  She talked to their tenant and she was willing to be lenient as long as Louise could prove that she had a job at the end of the month.

The doorbell rang and Gregory turned around to answer it.  She heard him saying: "Good day, uncle Clint," and then he disappeared into his room.

She showed Clint the answers in her emails: "Don't despair, Louise, you will get the right job, I will help you, we will just keep on looking.  Let's start the fire."  He said and took her hand in his as he walked her outside.  Suddenly hundreds of butterflies invaded the pit of her stomach.

"I was just wondering, what about the banks, they have lots of accounting jobs?"  He said as he dropped her hand to start the fire.

"Any job will do, I only have two weeks left to find it, I can't afford to be picky."

"Why, only two weeks?"

"If I don't have a job in two weeks' time, we have to move out of here."

"Oh", he scratched the back of his neck, thinking really deep.

"I have a two-bedroom flat, not far from here, if it comes to that, you and Gregory are welcome to move in.  You can share the one room, though it has only one single bed, we can sort that out. If you get a job you can always get a better place."

"Thank you, Clint, it is really kind of you, but I am still hoping to get a  job soon to enable me to keep this place.  We love it here."

"It"s okay, just remember my offer stands, if you need it."

After supper, she walked him to the door. "Thank you, Clint, I'm feeling so much better."  She said with a smile.  He gave her a sideways hug and kissed her on the cheek. "You're always welcome, goodbye," he said smiling at her before he left.
