Squares Or Drapes?

🎸Song Above🎸

The Squares had moved their party to the country club down the block for the Safety Day Talent Show. Johnny was on next to preform after the little contortionist girl who got an applause for forming her body into the shape of a pretzel!

Impressive! Johnny thought watching the little girl's performance. Especially for an eight year old!

He glanced out from the stage curtains at the crowd and noticed Becky sitting at a table with the other Square girl's. She looked straight at Johnny and blew him a kiss.

Johnny was taken aback by this gesture, but shot her a smile nonetheless. He didn't want to be rude, but he really wasn't interested in Becky. She just didn't seem like his type of girl. Perhaps he could friends with her, but not until she learns to not judge others by trivial things like looks and upbringing. He didn't think he could learn to hang out with people like that, people like Squares.

The Drape Kids looked like an enjoyable bunch to hang out with, especially that Blue Walker. That chick seemed so hip and cool! Come to think of it, the only reason Johnny enjoyed the Anti Polio Picnic this morning, was because Blue and her Gang showed up. When Johnny talked to her, he felt like he was talking to somebody back home in Rainbow Pines. True, at first he was nervous around Blue, but he soon felt comfortable with her.

But overall, Johnny was still stuck between a rock and a hard place. He could either make friends with the Squares and make his mother happy by fitting in with the good crowd he didn't like. Or he could make friends with the Drapes and disappoint his mother by hanging around with a bad crowd he did like. He didn't want to disappoint his mother after she tried so hard to help him get used to their new home, but he really didn't want to hang out with people who judged him.

Becky Prudeman took the stage after the young contortionist finished her routine.

"Hello again everyone!" she said into the microphone. "Now before we continue with the Maryland Country Club's Talent Show. I'd like to announce the club's brand new atomic-age bomb shelter! Let's give a big round of applause to our Junior Disaster Committee for raising the funding's for this latest addition to our club.

The crowd applauded the group of young Square boys on the far corner of the room.

Raise the funding? Johnny thought All they did was use their parents bank accounts!

"Now I'd like to remind the wait staff of the club, that in the event of a nuclear bomb attack the shelter is for members only!" Becky smiled and nodded.

Why did she smiling as she said that? Johnny thought in disgust. Does she think that the people who serve us are radiation-proof? Or is she just ignorant?

"Now, without further ado, let us continue with our talent show!" Becky said. "Up next is a newcomer to our club and community! So let's give a big hand to Johnny Davier as he preforms a song called 'Dizzy!"

Johnny walked onto the stage as Becky walked off. She gave him a flirty wink as she passed him by. Johnny bit his lip and tried to avoid her gaze.

Johnny put his guitar strap over his shoulder and stood in front of the mic. He was nervous about playing in front of people, especially the judgemental Square's. Then he remembered how nervous he felt earlier that day getting his polio vaccination and how looking at Blue made him feel better. He had an idea...

He closed his eyes, took a deep breath and pictured Blue's face in his mind. He began to strum his guitar along with the band behind him. Then when he opened his eyes and began to sing, he pictured everyone in the crowd with Blue's face.

Johnny:
Dizzy!
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinning,
Like a whirlpool, it never ends!
And it's you, girl, making it spin,
You're making me dizzy!

First time that I saw you, girl,
I knew that I just had to make you mine!
But it's so hard to talk to you with fellas, hanging round you all the time!
I want you for my sweet pet,
But you keep playing hard to get,
Going around in circles all the time!

Dizzy!
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinning,
Like a whirlpool, it never ends!
And it's you, girl, making it spin,
You're making me dizzy!

I finally got to talk to you and I told you just exactly how I felt,
Then I held you close to me and kissed you, and my heart began to melt!
Girl, you've got control of me,
'Cause I'm so dizzy I can't see,
I need to call a doctor for some help!

Dizzy!
I'm so dizzy, my head is spinning,
Like a whirlpool, it never ends!
And it's you, girl, making it spin,
You're making me dizzy!

My head is spinning,
Like a whirlpool, it never ends!
And it's you, girl, making it spin!
You're making me dizzy!
Oh, I'm so dizzy!
You're making me dizzy!
Yeah, I'm so dizzy!

As the music faded people began to applaude. Johnny walked off stage and his mother hugged him as soon as he took of his guitar.

"You did beautifully, sweetheart!" She told him, kissing his cheek.

"Thanks, Mom!" Johnny smiled. "Hey, Mom..." he said as she was about to walk away.

"Yes, dear?" She turned to me.

"Uh, I was wondering if I could, maybe go out tonight and socialize?" He asked in soft voice.

His mother nodded. "Of course! That sounds nice! I'm glad to see you're finally willing to make friends!" She said, smiling. "But I will be calling Becky's mother to ensure your home by your curfew!"

"Um... actually I was thinking of going down to that... Turkey Point place the Drape kids were talking about..." Johnny explained, meekly.

Miss Davier's expression fell flat. "Oh... I see" she said in a disappointed tone. Her expression turned sour.

"Please Mom!" Johnny pleaded. "I don't have school tomorrow and I promise I'll be home by curfew!"

"Do you know what I've been reading about those Drapes?" Miss Davier said, ignoring his plea's. "I read in the papers that just last month a fourteen year old girl was found dead on the train tracks! Because she was hung around with that kind of people!"

"Mom! Would you stop talking like that!" Johnny snapped.

"You barely know those children!" Miss Davier scowled.

"Neither do you!" Johnny told her. "And you're judging them all the same!"

"I'm doing it because I care about you!" Miss Davier told him.

"I know! I know you care, Mom!" Johnny said. "You remind me every day! And I notice! But you're smothering me into a new lifestyle I don't like! Just because you think it's safe! You can't keep me a in dorky, Square bubble for the rest of my life! Do you hear how these people talk? They're all a bunch of bratty, upperclass snobs! And you're turning into one of them!"

"John! That's enough!" She snapped. "Now I know this is all new for you, but we are here now! This is our home! And you are my son and I won't have you ruin everything by acting reckless, hanging around with a rough gang and getting yourself killed!"

"You used to believe in freedom" Johnny told her, narrowing his eyes angrily. "You used to believe that kids had to be free to make their own decisions! You used to say that! And now you're just a clean-cut, domestic shell of who you used to be! And you're dragging me along for it all! Well, I'm not you and I'm not going to be you! Deal with it!"

"Shut up, John! You sound just like your father!" Miss Davier shouted at him.

Tears began to well in Johnny's eyes. "Yeah, well... At least Dad wouldn't make me go through all this bullshit!" He muttered with his head down.

That struck a nerve in Miss Davier. She grabbed Johnny's guitar from the stand in the corner of the room and stormed out into the parking lot.

"Mom! What are you doing?" Johnny yelled, running out after her. "What are you--"

"John, you're my kid!" Miss Davier shouted at him. "You may not want to except this place or these people or my decision! But I'm the adult between us and you're just going to have to deal with that!"

Miss Davier then swung the guitar over her head and brought it down onto the pavement of the parking lot. The guitar shattered into large peices along with Johnny's heart. That guitar was his favorite thing in the world! That was the only thing he kept from Rainbow Pines! The only thing to remind him of his life before this suburban mess! And his own mother just deliberately smashed in front of him...

Johnny shot her a dirty look and began to storm away.

"John! Get back here right now!" His mother yelled.

He ignored her and kept walking. He didn't even want to look at her.

"Johnny! Answer me I'm talking to you!" She shouted.

He didn't he just kept walking fast paced away from her. He didn't want to see her or her Sqaure lifestyle again! If she didn't want him to be happy, then he would leave and find his own happiness and she would just have to accept it! Like he accepted her conforming to be a Square!

Even though Johnny felt a searing hot anger for his mother at that point, he still felt guilty when he heard her last plea ring out faintly in the distance.

"Johnny! Please! I'm sorry!"

Johnny needed sometime to cool off, he needed to unwind for a bit. He needed to go to Turkey Point...

🎸😢🎸

About twenty minutes later, Johnny was standing on the street outside of town. Turkey Point was about a ten minute drive outside the town limits, there's no way Johnny could make it before dark, so he decided to hitchhiking was the only way to go.

Johnny had never hitchhiked before and was about to give up when a blue motorcycle pulled over.

"Thanks for stopping!" Johnny said gratefully.

Then the rider pushed her hair out of her face and Johnny recognized her.

"Blue?" He asked.

"Hey, Johnny!" She smiled, brushing her bangs away from her eyes. She giggled looking at him. "Uh... why are you flipping off traffic?"

"What?" Johnny said putting his middle finger down. "No, I'm hitchhiking!"

"You're suppose to use your thumb?" Blue told him.

"Oh!" Johnny said "That must be why people were people were honking their horns and shouting swears at me? One guy threw a wrench at me! It just barely missed my head!"

Blue laughed. "I was just on my way to find you! I was gonna ask you if you wanted to come and see me sing" She said.

"I was actually on my way to Turkey Point to find you!" Johnny smiled at the coincidence.

"Really?" Blue asked, her tone a little more excited than she had intended.

"Yeah, I wanted to check it out... Turkey Point, I mean!" Johnny said "I've only been in Maryland for a month but I already know that if the Square kids hate it, chances are it's cool!"

"Oh, it is!" Blue nodded "My family and I have been living there my entire life! Trust me, you'll fit right in!"

"It would be nice to fit in for once" Johnny sighed. "So you're really gonna be performing tonight?"

"Yeah, it's my birthday today and my folks managed to squeeze me into the listing" Blue explained.

"Cool! So how old are you today?" Johnny asked.

"Twelve" Blue answered.

"Nice! So am I" Johnny said.

"Hop on my bike!" Blue said "I'll give you a ride to Turkey Point!"

"You're twelve year old and you're driving a motorcycle?" Johnny asked with some concern as he sat on the bike behind Blue.

"Don't worry!" Blue said "I haven't had that much to drink!"

Johnny's eyes widened "What?"

"Kidding!" Blue said as she kickstarted the bike and pulled out onto the street towards Turkey Point.
