CHAPTER SEVEN HIGHLIGHT
*Busted Chapter 11 Spoilers*
Somehow, kissing her longtime crush wasn't the highlight of her night. Beth had always known she was a sidekick, this much was evident when Kaelyn had all the makings of a protagonist -- tragic backstory, overprotective older brother, raging popularity, and most recently, a cute boy fawning over her. To be fair, Beth doesn't think she could handle being the main character, not if it meant hotwiring a motorcycle with your best friend, chasing down your (fake) boyfriend who is chasing after some random bad guys, and most importantly, getting shot and having a bullet bounce off like it's nothing. Safe to say, being the sidekick at the moment was enough for her.
Time slowed to a stop as Beth screamed, watching her friend have a gun fired directly at her. Really, this wasn't how she expected the night to go when she and Kaelyn pulled up to the party. Beth really didn't know what was happening as she watched Peter attach a web to Kaelyn and throw her back in the direction of Beth on top of the bridge they were standing on, but the safety was short-lived as Peter was yanked by the web he had attached to the truck he had been following. The web the boy had shot was attached to the top of the bridge where Beth was standing and Kaelyn slammed against it. It should have shattered something, but the redhead barely even flinched.
Beth ran over to the edge, pulling the web to a point where she could get a grip on her best friend, exclaiming, "Kae, what the fuck was that? Why did you think jumping was going to work out? Why did it work out? Have you always been able to deflect bullets? How the fuck did you make that jump and still have working legs? And the superhero pose? Dramatic as hell, but I loved it. Also, what the fuck?"
Kaelyn toppled onto the concrete, pleading, "One question at a time, please. I should be dead. Beth, someone shot a gun at my head and I'm completely fine."
"I wouldn't say completely fine," Beth shrugged as she sat down next to her friend on the concrete, reaching out to pull the girl to her for comfort. "I'm pretty sure you're in shock. Maybe we shouldn't have gone to this party huh?"
Immediately, the girl shook her head, arguing, "If we didn't, that bullet could have hit Peter or worse. Wait, Peter! He took off with that truck! We have to find him!"
Beth shook her head, putting her foot down with this one. Kaelyn was exhausted, barely breathing evenly, and they had to dissect the whole superpowers thing. They weren't going anywhere else tonight but home. "No, no, we are getting you home. He got himself into that, he can get himself out. Right now, we just found out you might have some sort of fucking superpowers, Kae, we are taking you home."
"Your house?" her friend's voice was hopeful as she asked, but Beth just shook her head.
"Home, home. You need to face him, he might know what the fuck is going on," she insisted, referring to Kaelyn's older brother with who she was currently in a fight. To be fair, she was in a fight with Caden most of the time, but this time was different.
"How are we even going to get there?" Kaelyn asked with a sigh and Beth shot a hopeful glance at the discarded motorcycle they had used to chase down Peter in the first place. "We are not riding that death trap anymore. Just leave it here, the owner will find it. I'd much rather walk back to the city."
Beth pulled out her phone, "I hate you because you're making me do this. I'll call Will."
She felt bad for having to call her brother considering he had only been home for a whopping two days and had barely spoken to Beth at all. Something was off about him since he got home from boarding school and she was determined to figure it out, but right now she just needed a ride.
"Beth?" her brother asked, sounding confused, and almost as if he had just woken up, "What's up?"
"Hey, Kaelyn and I were at this party and something happened and we just need a ride home. I'm sorry to bug you, I can drop a pin where we are, just please don't ask questions? A lot's happened tonight and I just need a car ride and for you to not tell mom and dad," she asked, her voice sounding more desperate than she actually was because she knew by now that she needed to play things up in order to actually get her brother to do a favor for her. At least that hadn't changed. "Can you please come get us?"
Will was quiet for a moment and she wouldn't be surprised if he had just hung up the call. After all, it seemed like she had woken him up (even though it was hardly past ten, apparently her brother had returned from boarding school as a grandpa). They hadn't seen each other in years and one of the first things she asks of him is a ride, which she's aware is probably a shitty thing to do, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
"Yeah, yeah, just send me your location," he said with a sigh, "Is everyone okay? You and Kaelyn are safe?"
She glanced over to her friend who was collapsed on the concrete and on the phone with someone, presumably Peter judging by her tense expression, before turning back around, "We're good enough. Thank you, I totally owe you for this one. I'll send you where we are right now."
Pausing the phone call for a moment to send her location, she could tell her brother got the text because the next thing she heard was his exclamation of, "Holy shit, why are you guys so far out from the city? Jesus, okay."
"I'll give you gas money," she bargained, knowing he would probably come to pick her up regardless of any cash that was on the table. "Thank you, you're my hero."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever, I'm on my way," the boy sighed and she could distantly hear the grabbing of keys before the call ended.
She pocketed her phone, looking back at Kaelyn who was absorbed in a conversation with Peter. At least that meant Peter was safe, even if the redhead looked irritated about it. Staying off to the side, she figured she would let Kaelyn have her moment. Her phone buzzed in her pocket and she expected it to be something from her brother, but instead, it was surprisingly a text from Liz.
sorry you had to go so soon, I hope I get to see you again soon :)
Okay, so finding out her best friend had superpowers and almost dying was not the highlight of her night, after all. The text on her screen was much, much better. She squealed quietly to herself, trying to craft a response that seemed chill but still happy.
I hope I get to see you, too :)
