'Cause good men die too, so I'd rather be with you.

RAFE:
I wish you wouldn't look at me like that.

ASHTON:
Like what?

Ashton Routledge loved the Outer Banks. To the warm, stunning beaches; the friendly and relaxing atmosphere, and the sweet neighbors, it's a place to stop and call it a vacation spot. Maybe even a home if you had the money.

A keyword here: loved. Ashton loved the Outer Banks, prior to everything going south, she was happy. Happy with her older brother John B, happy with her father (but not her mother. It's a long story), and happy with John B.'s friends. All worries melted away, but unfortunately, became a puddle under her. If it wasn't for the damning feud of Pogues vs Kooks, and the sudden vanishing of her father, Ashton's summer would have been a memorable one. Just like the ones before in 2019, and 2018.

And it starts with Rafe Cameron.

Or what Ashton likes to call him ⸺ The Dog of the Summer. Rafe Cameron is all bark and all bite, a common trait that seems to be so hard to find these days but when you live in The Cut, it's a disease that people suffer from. Born into immense wealth, Figure 8 is Rafe's territory, his trap. A trap that Ashton refuses to step into and get stuck in. He asserts his dominance but in the worst way possible: discrimination towards all Pogues. With sheer animosity, Rafe bears his razor-sharp teeth and bites into the Pogues ⸺ into Ashton, digging deep and through the bones all while whispering sickeningly sweet threats in her ear.

It's already clear that Rafe wants to see Ashton Routledge bleed. Bite, after bite, after bite until her ichor stains his teeth. Because, no one grinds his gears like Ashton does. No one gives him the adrenaline like Ashton does; no one gives him the satisfaction like Ashton does. And when he targets a Pogue that's not Ashton Routledge, the usual insatiable desire of bloodlust just disappears. Gone. He's empty, and Rafe Cameron hates feeling empty ⸺ so he fills his system with the impeccable white lines of cocaine. (That's when the lines blur of knowing if Rafe desires the idea of Ashton, or desires her.)

Rafe Cameron is The Dog of the Summer. Ashton Routledge is his prey, and she's fucking tired of having pieces of him harbored inside her. (So, as the familiar saying goes: Even a worm can turn.

If a worm can turn, then so can the prey. And if the prey can turn, then so can Ashton Routledge.)

As far as Ashton knows, she'll have to get her hands dirty for this summer; eventually start bearing her own teeth and sinking them deep into Rafe's bloodstream. Finally, it's this moment where Rafe wishes to witness his own damn ichor stain Ashton's teeth and lips.

RAFE:
Like you could love me.

✶ /IN WHICH,
In this summer, Ashton Routledge takes a turn sinking her teeth into her prey.
