034. a few good men

Damon shook his head, as he stepped backwards. "I don't understand.. where's Katherine?" He asked, as Natasha stood up, "She was never in the tomb." She sighed. "What do you mean?!" Damon asked, looking like he was struggling to believe this.

"Katherine flirted her way out of the tomb.. she has been free all this time, Damon. She left me, her twin.. her other half.. to rot in that tomb." Natasha spat, seeming hurt and angry. "She has been alive all of this time.. I take it she hasn't gone near either you or Stefan." The Petrova explained. Damon just continued to shake his head, "No.. no no no.. you're lying!" He accused her.

Natasha just looked at Damon with a frown, before instead smiling sweetly, "I'm your best friend, Damon. I have no reason to lie to you. Now come on, we can mourn about the bitch later.. I need more blood." Natasha declared, before heading over to the door. "You coming?" She asked in a chirpy tone, as if she hadn't just been angry. Damon sighed, vamp speeding over to her, to leave with her.

The next day had rolled around pretty quickly. Elena was sitting on the porch swing, her journal laid out on her lap. Lexa was sitting next to her twin, her phone up to her ear as she left Bonnie a voicemail.

"Hey, Bonnie, it's me just checking in, seeing how you're doing. We miss you here. Don't let your aunt drive you too crazy." Lexa said. Jenna walked up onto the porch and stops to look at Elena and Lexa while sipping her coffee. "Come home soon. Love you." Lexa said before she hung up. Elena looked over to her twin worriedly, as Lexa sighed. "What are you girls doing out here? It's cold." Jenna asked.

"Thinking, writing. The, uh, funeral for Bonnie's grandma, it brought back a lot about mom and dad. I was wondering... you said that you would do some digging about them, the adoption." Elena explained. "Right." Jenna replied. "So did you? Dig?" Lexa asked, curiously. "Come on inside." Jenna said, as the twins nodded and stood up, following Jenna inside.

Jenna, Lexa and Elena walked into the kitchen. Jenna pulled out her laptop and sat down at the dining table as Elena and Alexia stood next to her, Elena removing her jacket. "Your dad kept everything from his medical practice-records, logs, old appointment books." Jenna explained, before she pulled out a journal and opened it, showing a page to the twins.

"I found an entry from the night you were born. Patient and a birth date. Isobel Peterson." Jenna explained as the twins looked to her. "Do you think that's her real name?" Alexia asked as her aunt shook her head. "Pregnant teenage runaway? Probably not. First name, maybe. But where'd she get Peterson? Classmate? Best friend? So I binged it."

She pulled up the Internet and typed in a name in the search engine. "I searched for all the Petersons in this area born the same year as Isobel, found 3. 2 men and a woman, Trudie, who lived in Grove Hill, Virginia." Jenna explained. "That's not far from here." Elena admitted, glancing to her sister with an expression of hope. "Well, watch this." Jenna said, as she typed something else into the search engine and pulled up an image of Isobel from high school. "Isobel." Elena looks at the picture with a smile. "She was a cheerleader!" Lexa added.

"Trudie still lives there." Jenna said, as she handed Elena a post-it note, "This is her address."

"What about Isobel?" Lexa asked curiously, as Jenna sighed, "I couldn't find anything about her." Elena looked disheartened as she sits down at the table. Jenna briefly pauses before divulging new information.

"Listen. There's something else. Mr. Saltzman, Ric, his wife was from around here, and her name was also Isobel." The Sommers girl said. "Wait. Was, as in..." Elena trailed off as Lexa's expression saddened, realising where this was going. "She died." Jenna concluded.

Later, Lexa was putting away clothes in her drawer. Caroline stood behind her as they discuss this new turn of events.

"So.. you're adopted and Alaric's wife might have been your mother?" Caroline asked as Lexa nodded, before turning around. "Yep. It can't be true, right? I mean, the coincidence alone is just crazy." Lexa laughed nervously as Caroline shrugged, "It is crazy.. but it could be true."

"..Lena has the address for her friend Trudie.. I uh.. kinda think we should visit her." Lexa admitted. "You wanna talk to her?" Caroline asked as Lexa shrugged, "I don't know. I...I— I don't know. If it's true and they are the same person, that means that my birth mother is dead, and I don't know if I could handle that." She sighed.

Caroline opened her arms as Lexa fell into them, leaning her head into Caroline's shoulder. "You guys have been through a lot.. I guess it really is up to you though, Lexa." Caroline said, rubbing the brunette's back. "Yeah.. I guess I'll talk to Elena.. see if we can come to a decision." Lexa decided, before she and Caroline broke apart.

"Hey uh.. sorry I was hoping to stay around longer, but I promised Matt we'd hang out today." Caroline said, looking to her best friend with sympathy. "Oh- no go! I get it. Tell Matt I said hi." Lexa smiled. Caroline smiled back, before giving her best friend one last quick hug, before she dashed out of the door.

Lexa watched sadly as she was gone.. feeling a sting of jealousy over her and Matt.

Damon and Natasha were both drunk, and feeding off young sorority girls. There were other girls in dancing to the song Black Hearts On Fire playing in the room. All of the girls had bite marks up and down their bodies. Damon pulled away after feeding. "How do I taste?" The girls asked Damon as he grinned, "Oh, so much better than your friends. But shh. Don't tell them. They might get jealous."

Natasha's head was spinning as so much had changed since she'd been alive. The idea of getting drunk and feeding on girls was something she wasn't opposed to, with the hope that the familiar feelings of both may make her feel more comfortable for the time being.

The Pierce pulled away from the girl, once she no longer heard her heartbeat. "Uh oh.. that wasn't supposed to happen.." She admitted, before letting the lifeless body fall the the ground. "Oh.. Stefan won't be happy about that.." Damon responded.

Suddenly, the lights came on. Stefan entered the room. "No! Buzzkill Bob." Damon huffed as Stefan turned the music off before himself and Natasha looked up at him blearily. "Can we talk?" He asked the pair, before looking at the lifeless body on the ground. "Don't tell me she is dead." Stefan groaned. "Fine Steffie, I won't tell you." Natasha decided, before giving him her signature sweet smile.

Stefan sighed before looking to the Petrova, about to snap at her. "Don't worry brother! I got it." Damon declared. Stefan and Damon moved to converse in a private corner while Natasha and the girls lounged around on the sofas. Damon had a bottle of booze in hand.

"You're worried about me. That's nice. Don't be. There's no need. I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be? I spent the last 145 years with one goal: get in that tomb. I succeeded. Granted, Katherine wasn't in there to be rescued, instead Natasha.. but why dwell? You know, it's so liberating not having a master plan, because I can do whatever the hell I want." Damon rambled on. "That's kind of what I'm afraid of." Stefan deadpanned him.

"Relax. I haven't killed anyone in... too long." Damon insisted. "No, but your best friend recently woke up from desiccating in a tomb for over a hundred years and I'm sure, is feeling a dangerous hunger." Stefan explained as he looked over at the brunette. Damon scoffed, "I have Tasha under control, worry less. As for those girls, they will end up in their dorm with headaches, thinking they blacked out. Business as usual. Predictable you didn't pull me over here for a pep talk. So drink up." Damon replied, pushing the bottle into Stefan's chest. "Spill it, brother."

Stefan grabbed the bottle and places it to his side. "There was a woman you may have known a few years back named Isobel in North Carolina at Duke." Stefan began as Damon groaned. "You wanna discuss the women in my past right now? Seriously?" He asked. "You killed her."

"What's your point?"

"I just wanna know if you remember anything about her." Stefan insisted. "Oh, it's like a needle in a haystack, Stefan." Damon chuckled. "Well, think hard. It's important." Stefan said sternly before Damon grasped Stefan's shoulder and whispered in his ear. "Nothing is important, not anymore."

He clapped Stefan on the shoulder and pulls away, grabbing the bottle from Stefan's hand. "Great chat. I have to go and exploit some women in the name of grief, which I'm sure you understand. "TTFN", said the Tri-Delt. Heh." Damon chuckled before he walked back to the girls.

Elena held up the Post-It note with Trudie's address and then looks up at the house which matches the address. Lexa walked up to the front door and prepares to knock, but hesitates for a moment. Finally, she worked up the courage, and knocks on the door. Hearing no answer, Elena shook her head and the twins turn away when Trudie answers the door. The Gilbert's turn around and look at her.

"Trudie? Trudie Peterson?" Lexa asked, nervously. "Yes?" The woman answered. "Uh, my name is Elena Gilbert, and this is my twin Alexia Gilbert. We wanted to talk to you about Isobel Flemming." Elena explained. "Well, I haven't heard that name in years. How do you know her?" Trudie asked.

"I think that, um, well...do you know if she had a set of twins that she gave up for adoption?" Lexa asked as Trudie gasped. "My god. You're her daughters." She laughed in surprise. "I was just gonna make some tea. Would you like some?"

"Sure."

"Uh, the kitchen's this way." Trudie offered for the twins to step inside, without actually inviting them in. Trudie then backed away from the door, anticipating their entrance. Elena and Lexa glance at eachother, before they both step over the threshold and Trudie releases her breath, shutting the front door with a quick nervous glance outside.

The twins now stood in the dining room— Elena removed her jacket, and Lexa removed her scarf, as Trudie walked into the room from the kitchen. "I wasn't gonna come. I didn't think I was, but I was driving, and I hit this stoplight, and it made me think about when I was learning how to drive and then my mom would always warn me about this blind turn on the left-hand side, and then I was thinking about my mom, and I had your address. I'm sorry for barging in." Elena rambled on.

"It's no problem. Um, just a surprise, though." Trudie replied, before Elena, Alexia and Trudie all sat down at the table. "I haven't thought about Isobel in years." Trudie admitted.

"When was the last time you saw her?" Lexa asked, curiously. "About 17 years ago, when she left to go have you. We kept in touch for a while, but, well, you know, people drift apart." The woman replied. "And you don't know where she ended up?" Elena asked, curiously. "She was in Florida for a while. She was on her own. I know it wasn't easy."

"Do you have any idea who our father is?" Lexa asked urgently as Trudie shook her head. "I could never get her to fess up. Anyway, she finally pulled it together, got into college on a scholarship." Trudie explained to them.

"Where did she go?" Elena asked. "Somewhere in North Carolina. Duke, I think. Smart girl, smart school."

The kettle started whistling from the kitchen. "Let me just grab that." Trudie said as got up and goes into the kitchen, looking back at the twins cautiously.

Lexa, Elena and Trudie were looking through an old yearbook. Trudie pointed out a picture of her and Isobel. "Ah. They came to the games for us. The football team hadn't won in years. We were the stars. Well, Izzie was. But I was a damn good backup." Trudie explained. Elena smiled, "Heh. This is great. Thank you."

"You're welcome." Trudie looked at the girls teacups. "You haven't touched your tea." She noticed. "Oh. Yeah." Lexa said, before she picked the cup up and took a sip. She furrowed her eyebrows at the taste of it and gave it a whiff. "What is this?" The witch asked.

"Oh, it's just some herbal mixture." Trudie answered. Elena took a whiff of it, before looking to Trudie, "Vervain?" She asked, as Trudie doesn't respond.

"You know." Lexa said, looking to the woman. "Know what?" Trudie asked, acting as if she had no idea what they were talking about. "You didn't invite us in, and you're serving vervain tea. You know." Lexa explained as Trudie stood up quickly, "I think that you should probably leave."

Elena placed her cup down. "Wait. What are you not telling us?" She asked as Trudie shook her head. "Please leave. Now!" The twins glanced at eachother, before they got up and left the house.

As they walked back to Jenna's car, Elena grabbed the keys from her purse, while Lexa saw a man standing in the middle of the road. As fast as she can, Elena unlocked the car door, ignites the engine and drove off once they're both inside. The man slowly walked down the street towards where Elena was parked.
